Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

HISTORICAL PLACES

AKKALE
Akkale (also called Tırtar Akkale where Tırtar is the former name of Kumkuyu) is situated to south west of Kumkuyu at 36°32′N 34°13′E. Its distance to Erdemli is 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) and to Mersin is 51 kilometres (32 mi). The buildings are accessible by a short lane from the Turkish state highway D.400. The distance to Mediterranean Sea coast is about 250 metres (820 ft). Although the popular name Akkale means "White castle", actually the complex is not a castle.

It consists of the ruins of big building which was once a five-storey building, a small single-dome building and a large cistern. The five storey building is rightfully called palace, for it was used both as the office and the lodging building of the governor. The corbels which are on all sides of the building indicate the existence of a now completely-demolished balcony which circumscribed the building. The main staircase of the building was a spiral staircase. The small building was the treasury office and the office documents were kept in the basement of the building. The cistern is one of the biggest cisterns of Cilicia with over 17,000 square metres (180,000 sq ft). It was used to sell water to ships.

KANLIDİVANE
Kanlıdivane means "bloody crazy". This may refer to the red color of the surrounding soil. The name may also refer to a dreadful legend according to which the criminals had been executed by throwing into the sinkhole during Roman times. Every year during Mersin International Music Festival, one or two outdoor concerts are held in Kanlıdivane. The audiences and performers sit at the opposite sides of the sinkhole. (During such concerts Metropolitan municipality of Mersin add free bus trips to Kanlıdivane.)

Kanlıdivane (ancient Canytelis) is an ancient city situated around a big sinkhole in Mersin Province, Turkey. Kanlıdivane is in the rural area of Erdemli district, which is a part of Mersin Province. It is 18 km (11 mi) to Erdemli and 55 km (34 mi) to Mersin. Its altitude is approximately 230 m (750 ft). It is close to the town Kumkuyu at the coast and just few hundred meters to Çanakçı rock tombs. The sinkhole is quite wide; the longer dimension being 130 m (430 ft). The depth is about 70 m (230 ft)

Kanlıdivane was a part of the Olba kingdom in the ancient age. In the northern necropolis, there is a mausoleum, which was built by the Queen Aba for her husband and sons. On the inscription of the tower at south-west it reads; "Built by Teukros, the son of priest king Tarkyaris of Olba for Zeus." By the first century, Olba kingdom became a part of Roman Empire. Byzantine Emperor Theodosius II rebuilt the city as a Christian religious center and renamed it Neapolis. There are ruins of basilicas, cisterns, rock cut graves etc. around the sinkhole.

ÇANAKÇI ROCK TOMB
Çanakçı rock tombs are a group of rock-carved tombs in Mersin Province, Turkey.

Çanakçı tombs are a few hundred meters west of Kanlıdivane sink hole. The general altitude of the area is around 225 m (738 ft). They are sculpted on rocks on the southern side of a road running parallel to Datça-Mersin highway and the Mediterranean coastline at an altitude a few meters above the level of the road. The distance to Kumkuyu town is 6 km (3.7 mi) to Erdemli is 19 km (12 mi) and to Mersin is 56 km (35 mi).

The tombs were carved in around 2nd century AD, during Roman Empire period. Each tomb has a rectangular opening. On some of the openings there are inscriptions which condemn potential tomb thieves . Also on some tombs human figures are carved, unquestionably belonging to the bodies in the tombs. In two niches there are 3 human figures in each and in one niche there is one human figure.

It has been well-known with its fish restaurants. Fish Restaurants are available mostly at seafront.

Yumurtalık (meaning "egg nest") is a small city and Yumurtalık district in Adana Province. It is a Mediterranean port at a distance of about 80 km (50 mi) from Adana city, 30 km from Ceyhan city.

The sea is clean and there is still a relaxed feel to this coast, so Yumurtalık is a holiday and weekend retreat for the people of Adana and of other cities in Çukurova region, who come to stay in seaside holiday flats generally built in compounds. There are also small hotels and guest houses for occasional visitor who can swim during the day and stroll along the beach or into the village in the evenings.

Yumurtalık has a large free economic zone housing the production units of up to thirty companies presently in operation or in phase of being built. Fields of activities include industries ranging from petrochemicals, synthetic fibers and steel industry, and there are also plans for establishing a major shipyard.

A number of beaches in Yumurtalık are also the nesting places for loggerhead sea turtle caretta caretta breed. In fact the amount of beach-front holiday property is also part of the problem, even though the sand is clean the turtles won't lay eggs in these busy beaches with neon-lit discotheques blasting out all night. Adequate protection for the turtle's nesting habitat continues to remain a critical question.

These endangered species lay eggs only in Yumurtalık, in Akyatan beach in neighboring Karataş district and in İztuzu Beach in Dalyan in southwestern Turkey. In fact, the very name Yumurtalık means, among other things, egg nest in Turkish language. As well as tourism, the fertile agricultural lands that extend behind the coast are also a key factor in local economy and quality tomatoes, watermelons and other fruits and vegetables are extensively produced in Yumurtalık.

Karataş is a small city and a district in Adana Province, on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, between the rivers of Seyhan and Ceyhan, the Pyramos of Antiquity. Today Karataş is known for its fishing industry and as a place that Adana's inhabitants can easily access to relax on the beach. There are also rich farmlands behind the coast where cotton, watermelons, melons and other crops are grown.

The inlet of Akyatan is a breeding ground for many birds and the sea turtle species Chelonia mydas and Caretta caretta. Karataş is particularly important for the latter, which is an endangered species that lays eggs primarily in Akyatan, another beach in neighboring Yumurtalık district and İztuzu Beach in Dalyan in southwestern Turkey.

FISH AND SEA PRODUCT SPECIES LIST OF THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

HISTORY
The area has been inhabited from at least Hittite times and probably earlier. It was later part of the Assyrian province of Quwê (Que). By the time of the Greeks, who knew the city as Megarsos/Magarso, there was a port here at the mouth of the navigable Pyramos, supplying an important military and trading route into the plain of Cilicia, and also providing access to the sea for the river towns, like Mallus.

In 333 BC, just before the battle of Issus, Alexander the Great sacrificed here at a temple that, by interpretatio graeca, he took to be of Athena; the "Athena of Magarsos" who appears on Hellenistic coins has been diagnosed, from her pose and the attributes that surround her, to have Mesopotamian connections. The Romans rendered Magarsos as Megarsus. The port was later conquered by the Arab armies during the growth of Islam and then by the Ottomans in 1517.

Antiochia ad Pyramum
Antiochia ad Pyramum was an ancient coastal city of Cilicia, on the Pyramus (also Pyramos, now the Ceyhan Nehri) river, in Anatolia. The location of the city is on the Karataş Peninsula, Adana Province, Turkey, a few km from the city of Karataş. The course of the Pyramus has changed markedly since ancient times and the location of the ruins is no longer adjacent to the river, but decidedly west of its present course. The formerly important ancient site of Mallus lies a few km inland from Antiochia ad Pyranum along the former course of the Pyramus.

AKYATAN LAGOON

The lagoon is located at the northeastern edge of Mediterranean Sea, 30 km south of the city of Adana, in Çukurova region of Turkey. The entrance to the lagoon is either from Tuzla or through Küçük Karataş Village. Akyatan lagoon is a 14700-hectare wetland ecosystem that is designated as Wetland of International Importance by Ramsar Convention. A major stop over for migrating birds, Akyatan is recognized as an Important Bird Area by Bird Life International.

Akyatan is one of the richest lagoons in the Eastern Mediterranean. Large numbers of fish enter the lagoon from the sea. Karataş fishermen built a traditional fish trap at the exit from the lagoon to the sea, to capture species like gray mullet, gilt-head bream, sea bass, eel, Capoeta antalyensis (ray-finned fish), barbus, carp, common carp, rainbow trout and capoeta. On the eastern section of the lagoon, blue crab is caught.

Lake Akyatan is situated about 10 km. northwest of Karataş, a district of Adana province. Lake Akyatan, is a alluvial set lake located in the province of Adana in the Mediterranean Region. It is the largest lagoon in Turkey. It has an area of 35 square km and a maximum depth of 3 m. It is only 2 m above the sea level. The lake was formed about 10,000 years ago when the rivers flooded and turned the delta into a large swamp.

The swamp then disconnected from the sea, a cord was formed with the sand carried by the waves, and became an independent water body. Actually it is not completely independent. There is a 2 km narrow canal on the southwest side which connects the lake to the sea. Turkey's largest sand dunes are in the area between the lake and the sea. The dunes extend as wide as 3 km and rise as high as 20 m.

Lake Akyatan is an important site for migrating birds and the single largest green turtle rookery at the Mediterranean, holding 43% of the Mediterranean nesting population. Waterfowls are the most common species of birds in the lake. There are 250 bird species, including avocet, lesser charadriidae, little stint, ruff and black-tailed godwit, are observed at Lake Akyatan. The lake is an important nesting ground in the winter months, too. An estimated number of 70,000 to 80,000 birds live in the lake during the harsh winter of Anatolia. Samandağ, is a town and district in Hatay Province of southern Turkey, at the mouth of the Orontes River on the Mediterranean coast, near Turkey's border with Syria, 25 km (16 mi) from the city of Antakya.

Samandağ itself is a small town, close to the city of Antakya. The local economy depends on fishing and agriculture, especially citrus fruits, and Samandağ has the air of a country market town. Around the village of Çevlik (derived from Seleucia) there is a long sandy coastline popular with daytrippers from Antakya, although the sea can be stormy. This is an important nesting area of the endangered sea turtles Caretta caretta.

Endangered marine species loggerhead turtles, also known as Caretta Carettas and green sea turtles, have been coming ashore at Hatay coasts to lay eggs for the past two days, and volunteers have been flocking to the beaches to make sure that the maximum possible number of hatchlings make it back to sea. The sea turtles are arriving at the shores of Samandağ, a district of Hatay, which has a 14 km-long coast. The turtles dig nests and lay eggs at night and volunteer students from several universities have been in Samandağ to observe the turtles for the past few days.

Samandağ lies near the site of the ancient Seleucia Pieria, founded in 300 BC by Seleucus Nicator a general of Alexander the Great, in the Seleucid era that followed Alexander's demise. Seleucia Pieria quickly became a major Mediterranean port of the Hellenistic and Roman eras, the port of Antioch. But it was subject to silting and an earthquake in 526 finally completed its demise as a port. Samandağ, then called St Symeon, became the port of Antioch, and played an important role in the capture of the city by the Crusaders in 1098.

ECONOMY
Dörtyol is at the edge of the Çukurova Plain and being near the coast, is humid and the countryside is fairly green and fertile. Therefore as well as oil-handling, the economic activities of the district include forestry, cotton, and the cultivation of citrus fruits, especially a local variety of tangerine.

HISTORY
This crossroads has seen the passage of numerous armies and some of the biggest military campaigns in history, including the battle between Alexander the Great and Darius in 333 BC. More recently Dörtyol is remembered in Turkey as the scene of the first fighting in the Turkish War of Independence. The fighting with the occupying forces was ignited in Karakese which is located on the skirt of the Nur mountains village.

In 1918 Dörtyol was occupied by French troops supported by Armenian collaborators. Turks in the area retreated to the hills and began their resistance under the leadership of Kara Hasan Pasha. Dörtyol was thus not part of the Republic of Hatay but was a Turkish district added to Hatay when the province was brought into the Turkish republic in 1939.
