Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

AKBÜK ANCHORAGE

Milas - Muğla - Turkey

GPS : 37°01'47.4"N 28°06'37.5"E / 37.029827, 28.110424

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Akbük located at the Yerkesik-Gökova fork in the road, Akbük is a magnificent bay wedged between the Kıran Mountains, which rise sharply from the sea, and an emerald green peninsula poking out into the Mediterranean. This amazing bay, which harbors a number of tiny coves, is one of the main stops for Blue Cruise boats and yacht tourism. Akbük is included in the heritage conservation programme.

Akbük is the right in the middle of famous Kıran Winds. The eastern shores are called as Kıran Shore. When you stay here in summer, pay attention to the mountains especially upon northerly winds. At night, when the weather becomes dry, humidity drops, the mountains become visible and clouds move towards south, on seeing this take your anchor immediately and swift to the north. ease as much as possible and take a line ashore.

This area of the coast is studded with little beaches and hidey-hole bays. Boat trips leave from the harbour to ferret them out. Closer to hand, the town beach is a long belt of sand with rocky outcrops. Some parts of it are hush-hush quiet with a thick backdrop of trees, others are bright with parasols and bordered by a paved promenade.

The coves along the western part are shallows. The cove at the entry behind Akbük Point, affords adequate sheltering. Akbük Limanı indents to the west on the northern part of Point Akbük. The peninsula is densily wooded by pine trees. Boats drop anchor in 10 - 15 meters by the end. Akbük provides adequate sheltering from west and northwest blowing winds. It is open to south and south east. Take a line ashore.

This is a large cove that stretches inland for 8 kilometres. The sea near of the coast is fairly shallow. As there is a fair bit of breeze it is not easy for Blue Cruise boats or daily tour vessels to anchor. Pine trees behind, densely cover the shores and slopes. Tripper boats give break here. A stream by the beach side between reeds and trees joints the sea.

There are two piers of the restaurants. Moorings are tailed on jetties. Water, electricity and wireless connections are available. Some provisions are found in the markets of the restaurants.

A small number of hotels, bed and breakfasts and restaurants serve travelers on the bay just 10 km from Ören.

A rough path goes in to the forest and reaches to Yerkesik 35 Km, Ören 25 Km and Akyaka 25 km.

Ancient sites
Akbük puts you within striking distance of ancient sites that hark back to the glory days of Greece and Rome. The closest is the crumbling Temple of Apollo in Didim, where roofless columns reach up to the heavens. It’s 30 minutes’ drive away. Meanwhile, history buffs will have a field day mooching around the ancient city of Ephesus, 74 kilometres north. It doesn’t take much imagination to picture the life of the residents a few millennia back after walking their marble pavements and sitting among the remains of their temples and theatres.

AKYAKA FISH HARBOUR

Ula - Muğla - Turkey

GPS : 37°02'56.0"N 28°19'28.9"E / 37.048894, 28.324700

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Akyaka is a coastal township with its own municipality in the Ula district of Muğla Province in southwestern Turkey. The town is situated at the far end of the Gulf of Gökova, at the start of the fertile Gökova plains.

Capacity : 170 Boats

Administration : Akyaka Fishery Products Cooperative

Beach : Public beach, fine sand
Health : Doctors, Dentist, Hospitals, Pharmacies
Public Market : Akyaka market Wednesday, Muğla market Thursday, Gökova market  Saturday.

AZMAK STREAM
GPS : 37°03'00.4"N 28°19'33.5"E / 37.050110, 28.325965

Azmak is the name in short of a short but deep stream which joins the sea in Akyaka and formed by springs extending about two miles from East to West. Its depth allows boats to ascend it for a considerable distance and the richness of its underwater fauna made it a favorite spot for daily boat tours around Akyaka and for scuba diving.

The water is cold and slightly salty due its level course with the sea across the plain, but watercress and celery thrive in Azmak and restaurants along its course make the stream a symbol and an important point of attraction for Akyaka region.

The word "azmak", sometimes used to describe a river, means "running wild" in Turkish, in a reference to the stream's strong, rather than violent, current, especially in winter. Akyaka's azmak is also referred to under the fuller name of "Kadın Azmak", qualifying it with female attributes and distinguishing it from azmak of Akçapınar at the opposite side of the same plain.

FISH AND SEA PRODUCT SPECIES LIST OF THE AEGEAN SEA

IDYMA

Safe altitude considerations governed the choice for settlements of the ancients as well. Gökova town, inland from Akyaka was the location of the historic city of Idyma, some of whose remains reaching back at least to the 4th century BC, when it was founded as a Carian city, are still visible. Idyma urban zone may have extended as large as the area between the immediate east of Akyaka well beyond the village of Kozlukuyu, a dependent neighborhood of the town of Gökova, 3 km away.

The town lies close to the highway connecting Muğla (north) and Marmaris (south). It's about a 20-25 min drive away from Marmaris.

In 546 BC, the Persian armies under the command of Harpagos conquered the area, but the Carian customs and the religion remained unchanged. Delian League took over between 484 and 405 BC and Idyma is mentioned in the tax lists for the years 453-452 BC, the earliest written document on the city. The same reports mention a local sovereign by the name of Paktyes, whose descendants may have founded a dynasty which governed Idyma and to whose members the rock tombs could be attributable. A mint city, Idyma produced its own coins, one side of which was marked with the name Idimion, and the other side with the head of a Pan, hinting at a shepherd's cult.

From 167 BC to at least the 2nd century AD, Idyma, together with the entire region south of Muğla (Mobolla) was part of the Rhodes's mainland possessions (Perea Rhodiorum). A Byzantine castle worth restoring also stands on the slopes of Sakar and an underground tunnel leads to the bank of the stream of Azmakdere or Kadın Azmak, possibly named Idymus in ancient times.

Because of the extent of the ancient site, in terms both of its area and longevity, some of its archaeological finds are associated with Akyaka, while many with Gökova and particularly Kozlukuyu. The acropolis, city walls 200 meters in length and around fifty rock tombs are located along the steep climb (sea level to 400 meters) of Küçük Sakar at Kozlukuyu. The Acropolis was explored by the French archaeologist Louis Robert in 1937.

SEDİR ISLAND ANCHORAGE

Ula - Muğla - Turkey

GPS : 36°59'39.7"N 28°12'26.6"E / 36.994373, 28.207395

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

The islands between points Çapa Burnu and Domuz Burnu are known as Şehir Islands. The largest island is called as Sedir Island. Sedir Island is located on The Gulf of Gökova on the 18 km north of Marmaris. Sedir Adası, also known as Cleopatra Island, is a small island in the Gulf of Gökova of southwestern Aegean Sea off the coast of Ula, part of Muğla Province of Turkey.

PROTECTION
As a passionate gesture, her lover Marc Anthony shipped a boat of sand from Egypt and together they swam in the crystal blue waters and walked the sandy beach that reminded her of home. Hence, the name of Cleopatra’s island and for many years, nobody challenged the myth until science proved that although there is no other sand like it in Turkey, its unique formation is actually caused by dissolving seashells.

It has one of the most special beaches in the world which is famous for its beach made from seashells. It is said that this organic sand was brought by ships from the Red Sea especially for Cleopatra. Each grain of sand is a perfect sphere, for this reason the beach is heavily protected by the government to prevent any sand being removed from the beach.

Under protection of the government, strict rules were enforced including making it illegal to remove any sand from the area. Beach towels and bags are not allowed and people are requested to shower before leaving. Most of the sandy beach is also under restricted access.

PUBLIC BEACH
After disembarking from the boat at the jetties on Sedir Island, a short walk through rocky olive groves brings you to the “sandy” beach. The beach itself is about 100 m long and visitors are only allowed on a narrow strip about 2 - 3 m deep. It is said that sufferers of rheumatic aliments find that lying on this 'sand' significantly eases their complaints.

APPROACH
There is a clean passage between the land and the Saray island, when you arrive from southwest to the land. Of land depth is between 5 - 7 meters, in the hard sand. Because of the waves that come from the west, this cove is incompatible for passage, especially at night. There is a second northern passage to this passage, between the land and the tiny island Saray. It is the widest and cleanest passage, but be careful from the shallow water northern to Şehir island.

Ördek Rocks : Care is needed for a sea-level rock extending to W from Sedir Adası. This rock-bounded area is marked by a metal pole with W cardinal.

LANDING SEDIR ADASI
A custodian patrols the island, who will charge you a fee to step ashore. Visiting the island is controlled by ticket and you are not allowed to visit at night.

PIER
There is a pier by Sedir Island, occupied by tripper boats. It gets very crowded in summer. The settings are very attractive, but extreme care is needed while anchoring here.

There are 3 meters depths of the pier. Boats may drop anchor and get a line to the pier at night.  The bottom is sand but you must be sure your anchor is dug well. With strong winds, there are gusts and confused sea and considerable swell penetrates right in the cove itself. The shore on the north of Sedir Island, extending like a tonque, provides better sheltering from breeze with a line ashore. The cove is open to northerly blowing winds. The wind direction is liable to change in the evening from N to NE.

BUFFET
There is a small Buffet on the island with fairly reasonably priced drinks and snacks. The beach closes at 7 pm and it's best to visit the island in the morning, as early as possible, because the beach gets overcrowded especially after 1 pm during the high season.  There is little shade so it's a good idea to bring plenty of water.

EAST COVE
GPS : 36°59'34.0"N 28°12'35.0"E / 36.992778, 28.209722
Visiting boats anchor at swing in calm weathers. A cove on the east is a safer anchorage. Drop anchor in the depths of 8 - 12 meters and take a line ashore. Care is required on approaching to the east, because of rocks of anchient mole, lying for about 75 meters on the northern tip of Sedir Island.

It has a better spot for anchoring in the east which is sheltered from western breeze. Since it's pier is being used by daily boats, it is better to stay on anchor. During strong nights it gets some swell. It is also possible to anchor and take a long line ashore. The depths fall off quickly into the middle of the bay.

SOUTH COVE
GPS : 36°59'28.0"N 28°12'26.0"E / 36.991111, 28.207222
There is another cove on the southern part of the island, providing adequate sheltering from northerlies. Drop anchor in 6 - 9 meters and get a line ashore.

KEDRAE
Sedir Island, known in ancient times as Kedreae, features an amphitheatre and some other Greek/Roman ruins shadowed by the silvery green olive trees. However, its biggest claim to fame is its Cleopatra Beach, with golden sands virtually non-existent anywhere else in the Eastern Mediterranean, accompanied by milky turquoise waters of the cove.

Called Kedreae in ancient times, present day myths refer to when the exotic queen of Egypt, Cleopatra spent time in the region. Although the natural landscapes and turquoise-blue sea captivated her, she was missing her homeland.

Kedreai was an important Carian settlement in the Rhodian Confederacy. Mykenails first settled here 1400 B.C., and together with Knidos and Halicarnassus they built the confederation of Heksapolis. This site had a fortified enclosure with towers. The remains of the Doric temple of Apollo were converted into a church. The city’s theatre is still in good condition.

This important settlement, paid taxes to the sea pact of Attik- Delos. By the year of 450 b.c, it is occupied the island by Lisander from Isparta, and the inhabitants were sold as the slaves. Later on, they became part of the kingdom of Rhodes. By the year of 129 b.c it is occupied by the Romans which established the east province. In its eastern side, there is a palace, situated next to it are remnants of walls dated back to the Greeks and the Romans. The best preserved antiquities are of the little theater. Later on, the Dorians built a sanctifies to the god Apollo, which several hundred years later, served as infrastructure for a Christian basilica.

Even though the beach is a popular attraction, there are other notable historical structures worth visiting. The beginnings of Sedir Island are estimated to date from the fourth century BC when the Greek Spartans ruled it. Following them, the island fell under Roman rule and it is from this era that several historic structures exist including an agora, ampitheatre, temples, churches, baths, and harbour ruins. Full excavations have not yet taken place and historians are eager to receive more funding to continue their work.

You can follow a path from the beach to the well preserved ruins of an amphitheatre on the island.

Near the top of the hill are the ruins of a temple (converted into a church by the Byzantines). Running parallel along the eastern shore are ancient city walls and towers that have stood the test of time. The Agora, containing stones carved in the shape of hearts is a delightful attraction and also offers a panoramic view of the surrounding mountains.

ORTA ADA
There are 5 meters depth in the passage between Sedir and Orta Ada and 185 m from the north of Sedir Island.  The cove on the east of Orta Ada affords sheltering from breeze. Strong northerlies send swell in. There are reefs in the depth of 4 m, running out 500 m on the north of Orta Ada.

Malderesi Harbor next to Gazulen Creek constitutes the extreme end of Değirmen Bükü, which is clayed and turbid as Ince and Küçük Kayın Creeks flow in this region of the thicket. At the west part of the inlet there is English Harbor and Hırsız Harbor.

There are numerous safe anchorages dotted around the shores of the bay. English Harbour itself is on the western side of the bay. Here you can anchor in 6 -7 metres and take a line ashore. The bottom is mud and the holding is good. On the eastern side of the bay you can anchor and take a line ashore or, alternatively, go bows-to the wooden jetty off the northernmost of the restaurants.

This cove is a good shelter for any direction in Değirmenbükü. İngiliz Limanı lies on the west of Hırsız Koyu. It indents to north then curves to the west. The shores on starboard afford all-round sheltering. Drop your anchor in the depths of 7 - 8 meters and take a line ashore. The depths along the eastern side abruptly shelve ashore. It has a dark turquoise color and very calm and still coves. There is a mermaid’s statue at the opposite the cove.

It is a quite preserved cove found opposite the Okluk Cove. In World War II, English ships running away from German submarines took shelter here. The harbor has its name from the English war ships which had got shelter here. When passing out it is really impossible to see the boats or schooners anchored inside other than their masts maybe. At night they would leave and attack the German held islands and enemy ships and return to the cove to hide. During the day, the crews would cover the ships with branches so that they were not noticeable.

BÖRDÜBET COVE ANCHORAGE

Bördübet, Marmaris - Muğla - Turkey

GPS : 36°49'24.2"N 28°03'39.3"E / 36.823393, 28.060926

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Located on Reşadiye peninsula of the holiday town of Marmaris, the Bördübet cove is a small fishing and beekeeping village.  Bördübet faces the Gökova Gulf and is surrounded by dense forests. Like many other coves in the area, it has a unique nature. Golden Key Bördübet is 27 km from Marmaris and 55 km from Datça.

Bördübet, which means "bird's bed," was aptly named by English soldiers who hid in this cove many years ago. The area is home to many species of birds, including rock doves, goldfinches, nightingales, piscivorous birds, sparrow hawks and many other kinds of birds. It is perfectly safe to watch and listen to the birds, but if you are to take a walk into the depths of the forest, it is better to first consult with the local inhabitants.

The most significant feature of the cove is the river that flows through the dense pine forest and empties out into the sea. Surrounded by green pine trees, the sea makes for a wonderful view, particularly for photographers. The region provides a relaxing, stress-free haven away from the city.

The place where the river meets the sea creates an interesting cove reminiscent of a small Amazon forest, with all its plant, animal and bird diversity. It is home to many wild animals such as wild boars, rabbits, squirrels, foxes, and badgers.

Because of its unique forest location, Bördübet offers rare shadows and cool weather even on the hottest days of August.

Bördübet Golden Key, as well as the beach on the island, may also go to the sandy public beach 300 meters from our hotel. The transportation here, is provided by passing through a the forest footpath. On Island beach, we provide services like showers, toilets, cabins to change clothes. On Island beach service is provided, on the sandy public beach no service is provided.
