Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

YALIKAVAK HARBOUR

Yalıkavak, Bodrum - Muğla - Turkey

GPS : 37°06'21.9"N 27°17'26.1"E / 37.106093, 27.290571

Yalıkavak is a town near Bodrum in Muğla province, on the Aegean coast of Turkey. It is 18 km (11 miles) from Bodrum and located at the north eastern tip of the Bodrum peninsula. It has been inhabited since near the end of the second millennium B.C. It is an important tourist resort.

There are two anchorages in the vicinity. First one is Palmarin Marina. The other anchorage is Yalıkavak shelter. Yalıkavak Marina is popular with yachties who come from all over to experience its superb facilities and one of the places to see in Yalıkavak. It is just a short walk from the center of Yalıkavak.

Yalıkavak is a small, picturesque fishing village that has not lost its tranquil, unhurried air or Turkish flavour despite the influx of some tourism which has affected most other towns. It has a relatively traffic-free centre built round a small harbour area crowded with a mix of modern and old restored buildings housing bars, restaurants and hotels. Although it is largely based around the picturesque harbour, it is not just a seaside resort. Yalıkavak Town is the coolest spot in Bodrum peninsula, breeze has welcoming effect in hot summers.

Yalıkavak's town logo is a windmill, and you will see them dotted around the peninsula. These windmills are from an earlier era, and many of them have been left in a state of disrepair, but more recently the town councils have realized the tourist benefit of renovating them. There is a renovated windmill by Yalıkavak Harbour, and a group of 3 windmills on the hill overlooking the town, on the road to Bodrum. One of which is fully renovated. If you time your visit just right, you will see the caretaker unfurling the windmill sails.

HARBOUR

Yalıkavak lies between points Göçük Burnu on southwest of Yalıkavak Peninsula and 1 Nm south of Çoban Burnu, it indents 2 Nm to the east. The port faces to the west, open to westerlies. There are three coves on the northern part, this anchorage is known as Küdür. These coves; Ötüsarmı Koyu, Piresan Koyu and Bahçe Koyu. These coves afford good shelter from breeze. Stronger breeze cause choppy waters when it is funnelled down from the mountains. The bottom is weed. Make sure your anchor is well dug in.

If you are heading to the town, Karataş rocks, lying on the route, 650 meters from the shore, are extremely dangerous. Care is needed. Western tip of Port Bodrum Yalıkavak Marina is close to these rocky shallows.

This shelter is always loaded with local fishing boats. There are laid moorings tailed on pier. Cooperative manages the shelter and charges fee for berthing.

TAVŞAN ISLAND ANCHORAGE

Gümüşlük, Bodrum - Muğla - Turkey

GPS : GPS : 37°03'08.5"N 27°13'58.8"E / 37.052361, 27.233006

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Tavşan Adası is located at Gümüşlük. Tavşan Adası (Rabbit Island), situated in the middle of the bay and accessible by a partially sunken causeway, offers a magnificent panorama. Tavşan Adası is guarding the entrance to the cove and harboring its own set of ruins connected to the mainland by way of a sunken ancient city wall that allows visitors to wade over from the town center, the island offers a beautiful panoramic view of Gümüşlük cove and beach.

Exploring the Tavşan Adası walking through history along an ancient causeway, enjoying the sun, refreshing yourself in the crystal clear sea are only some examples of what Gümüşlük Bay offers visitors.

Gümüşlük, a seaside village and fishing port in Turkey, is situated on the remains of the ancient city of Myndos. The remains of the foundations of buildings can be clearly seen in the knee deep water that leads from the middle of the two bays to Rabbit Island (Tavşan Adası). If you want to feel history under your feet you should visit the Rabbit island, which separates the two beaches of Gümüşlük, Bodrum.

A valley of citrus gardens, and beyond the blue sea sprinkled with green islands. Blue, green and white, those ancient colours, were exuberantly mingled, as were the scents which filled the air. Gümüslük where the water was so clear that the history which lay beneath it was visible just beneath the surface. You were very young. You did not think of taking off your dark blue clogs. You pulled up your skirt and began to walk through the water to the island so that you could look at Gümüşlük from there.

You looked, and what you saw was the past looking at the present. As you walked towards Tavşan Adası through the shallow water concealing ancient walls and breakwaters, you looked out to sea to the horizon, your face turned to the summer breeze blowing from the Northwest. Now close your eyes. The Gümüşlük through which you plunged in your red skirt as a fresh young girl, like the game of skimming stones across the surface of the water, is right there.

Rabbit Island is accessible by a partially antique sunken causeway, which was built during the hellenistic period. Once upon a time the Rabbit Island was a place which was visited by the King of Halicarnassos Mousolos and his beloved Artemisya. He had the causeway built in order to have access to the Rabbit Island to feed the rabbits living on this small island and watch the famous and unique sunset with his beloved Lady.

It is possible to walk to the island through the water since it is only knee-deep. You can climb up to the top of the island, take photos of the beautiful surroundings, sunbathe or dive into the clear blue waters of Gümüşlük from the rock formations and swim above the ruins near the island. Rabbit Island was named after the rabbits which once inhabited the island, and it is still possible to see rabbits running wild on the island.

Excavation of Rabbit Island
Access to Rabbit Island became restricted, and you could no longer officially explore the Island. You can still walk on the sunken walkway from the mainland to the edge of Rabbit Island, but once your reach the island, there isn’t much to do, except turn around and walk back to the mainland. This restriction is for a good cause though. Rabbit Island is currently being excavated, and archeologists from the Uludağ Üniversity (which is situated the other side of Gümüşlük Harbour) have made some memorable discoveries.

They discovered a huge ancient theatre that was constructed in the Hellenistic period, around 400 BC; a sacred burial area of a 5th century church and three naves; as well as a 13th century tower.

GÜMÜŞLÜK COVE ANCHORAGE

Gümüşlük, Bodrum - Muğla - Turkey

GPS : 37°03'13.3"N 27°13'57.0"E / 37.053706, 27.232513

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Gümüşlük is a sleepy fishing village partly occupying the site of ancient Myndos, with the happy consequence that development around the village is strictly controlled. Gümüşlük is an adeqaute natural shelter on the western part of Bodrum Peninsula. It lies between Points Dönmez Burnu on the NW and Kara Bakla Burnu on the SW and it is hidden by 1.2 Nm to the east of Çavuş Adası.

The city enclosed the harbour by means of a wall on the ridge along the western side of the bay and continued in an almost perfect square inland to the east. Much of the wall can be traced, but little else remains although there is an excellent deep anchorage between the headland and Rabbit Island, around which there are submerged mosaics that will be of interest to snorkelers on a Gümüşlük yacht charter.

Gümüşlük is subject to heritage conservation programme, to preserve its identity. Some fragments from Myndos can be observed. The village took its name from silver ore around. Since 2004, the village has played host to the Gümüşlük International Classical Music Festival.

There’s also an inviting beach at the far end of the village, sun-loungers and cushions are available for free but you may wish to purchase a drink or snack from the cafe which can be brought to you if you wish. Gümüşlük has an attractive sand and gravel beach with some watersports facilities and equipment to rent.

Today the village has become very popular with its fish restaurants ashore. Along the waterfront, there are a dozen or more restaurants from which to choose - seafood is the order of the day here and you can expect spanking fresh fish but hopefully no salty wine.

The bay should be entered close to the island on the east side in order to avoid the sunken remains of the mole on the west (which are usually buoyed anyway). Once inside, anchor wherever you can, if necessary taking a line ashore or dropping a kedge anchor to avoid swinging. Depths range from 15 - 16 meters in the centre to 5 - 10 meters at the head and sides of the bay. Holding is good once through the weed.

At the entry, from the peninsula to the direction of islet, below sea level dressed stones of old breakwater runs out for about 30 m from the shore. Keep clear away. Reefs of concrete quay run out about 40 m from the shore on your starboard. The sheltering part is to the north. The depths in the way are 6 - 15 m and gradually shelve to the shore. Boats swing at anchor. Strong northerlies send swell in.

Anchor in 5 - 15 m (16 - 49 feet) metres where convenient. The bottom is mud and weed, with good holding once through the weed. Anchor off the west side of the bay and take a long line ashore. Off the village there are a number of wooden jetties where a yacht can go stern - or bows - to if there is room.

PIER
GPS : 37°03'16.1"N 27°14'06.3"E / 37.054465, 27.235087
Alternatively, it may be possible to anchor moor back to the wooden jetty in front of the village (although the overnight charge, is kept deliberately high in order to deter private yachts). The anchorage is usually very crowded with private yachts and gulets bringing diners to the restaurants lining the bay and care is usually needed when placing your anchor to avoid frayed tempers.

PIER
GPS : 37°03'25.2"N 27°13'55.2"E / 37.056996, 27.232006
There is a pier with berthing capacity of 8 boats. Yachts anchor towards NW go stern with a long line ashore. The bottom is sand-weed. Make sure your anchor is well dug in. Tripper boats use this pier. Water and electricity can be obtained. Fish auction is arranged. You can purchase fresh fish and block ice from the fishmongers.

MYNDOS
Travelling north from Gümüşlük brings you to the Bronze Age site of the ancient city of Iassos, which is excavated a little further each year by a team of archaeologists from Italy.

In ancient times it was known as Myndos, and the ruins of this ancient town (destroyed by an earthquake) can still be seen today on Tavşan Adası just offshore, or underwater nearby if you go snorkeling, or in the bush that grows beside the bay. Tavşan Adası can even be reached via an ancient underwater causeway; and if the tide is right you can still walk out there without getting your knees wet.

The bay of Myndos has always been renowned as a safe, sheltered anchorage, which is why (in 44 BC) Brutus and Cassius (Caesar’s murderers) used Myndos as their fleet base … or so says Shakespeare in his play “Julius Caesar”. Even today on Admiralty charts, the bay of Gümüşlük is listed as a safe harbour for boaties. It’s also a great spot to relax. It’s not crowded nor built out, like so many little bays on the west coast of Turkey.

This is probably due to all the ancient remains in the area, which induced the government to ban development hereabouts. You can now only develop an existing house, and there aren’t many of those in this little community by the water. In fact, it feels almost remote. There are quite a few ruins (both Roman and Byzantine) to explore around the Bay. Indeed, walking along the shoreline, I saw many pottery shards from ancient amphorae..

Gümüşlük, a seaside village and fishing port in Turkey, is situated on the remains of the ancient city of Myndos. The remains of the foundations of buildings can be clearly seen in the knee deep water that leads from the middle of the two bays to Tavşan Adası (Asar Adası).

Gümüşlük stands on the site of the ancient Carian city of Myndos or Myndus whose seafront sections slid into the sea in some long-forgotten earthquake. Today these barely submerged remains are a magnet for snorkellers and underwater photographers. The land site is yet to be fully excavated, but traces of antiquity can be spotted in empty fields, sounding an evocative echo of a distant age.

Çatal Ada lies 1,5 mile on the west of Turgutreis. There is a light tower on the northern tip of the island. It is anchored in the depth of 4 - 6 meters on the beach side between the hills. The southern part is more adequate for anchoring with a line ashore. The bottom is sand-weed. It gets strong swell from the beach side when breeze blows strong. The bottom is so clear, you can observe numerous hues of blue.

There is strong current here. We suggest not cruising at nights because of the rocky patches and shallows on the northern part of Çatal Ada. Care is also needed on the southeast shores, around the islets Çobanada, Tüllüceada and Sarıot for the reefs and shallows.

These dangers are not marked.

PIER
GPS : 37°00'22.4"N 27°13'07.1"E / 37.006217, 27.218627
There is a pier on the south, if you walk up, you can have stupendous view of the western shores. Cool anchorage to take rest.

Provisions can be obtained from Turgutreis.

Two islets Kuyrukada and Yassıada are on the south.

A large number of historical artifacts are still on the seabed. They are not easily identified in choppy sea. Objects excavated by underwater archeologists are displayed in Bodrum Museum.

Diving tours are arranged from Turgutreis.

KADI KALESİ ANCHORAGE

Turgutreis, Bodrum - Muğla - Turkey

GPS : 37°01'55.6"N 27°14'50.0"E / 37.032124, 27.247231

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Kadıkalesi is situated in the western part of the Peninsula, nestled halfway between Turgutreis and Gümüşlük. Kadı Kalesi translates to Judge’s Castle, and is named after the residence of the local area Judge from ancient times. The remains of the building are still visible on the hillside above the town.

Kadıkalesi, four kilometres to the north of Turgutreis, was an old Leleg city. Now it is developing as a greener holiday resort area. The name of the place comes from the Hellenistic era castle on the top of the hill. The church on the opposite hill dates from the Roman period. The historic fountain under the platanus trees is still being used today.

Kadıkalesi is a small coastal location with a few resorts and a small sandy beach. Whilst its neighbour, Turgutreis has developed and grown, Kadıkalesi remains a simple and unspoilt. There’s a small main street and a few shops, but none of the touristic chaos of other towns on the Peninsula experience.

It’s a small town that stretches along the shore with restaurants and other resort village amenities making it easy to get around on foot or bike. There is a narrow but sandy beach along the coastline for swimming and sunbathing, and a selection of wooden docks. Lot’s of this area is populated by resorts, but there are still a few quiet areas you can discover to chill out at the beach.

The location of Kadıkalesi, make it a perfect cove to enjoy water sports. Mornings are good for beginners, as the wind starts to pick up in the afternoon. Kadikalesi has a long, partially protected sandy beach offering the best views over the assorted islands there. A few fish restaurants overlook the beach and there is very little accommodation available.

Turgutreis is a residential place on the western part of Bodrum Peninsula. The name of the town is carved on the rocks. The northern shores are shallow. Crusing in this part becomes uncomfortable with strong wind, cause gusts out. The southern part is more convenient for cruising. D-Marin Turgutreis is situated on this part. The name of the town is derived from great naval commander of Ottoman Empire Turgut Reis. The town has become an important touristic spot with its very clear sea and hosts a large number of hotels and pensions. Tangerine gardens behind, are surrounded by cypress trees.

Descending from a mountainous hinterland through a luscious valley of orchards and vegetable garden lies D-Marin Turgutreis, only 20 km from Bodrum, on sparkling, pristine seas. With 5 km of sandy beaches, excellent sea-front restaurants and bars, mild winters and warm summers, the town is a perfect place to unwind.

The market on Saturday attracts holiday-goers from the surrounding area and, whilst the town has all the comforts of a modern resort, it still maintains much of its traditional charm. Nearby Gümüşlük, with its ruins of ancient Myndos visible just below the water and its summer music festival, is only a few kilometers up the coast. Moreover, with Bodrum a short drive away, there is no danger of getting bored here!

ASPAT COVE ACHORAGE

Akyarlar, Bodrum - Muğla - Turkey

GPS : 36°58'39.1"N 27°18'44.3"E / 36.977533, 27.312312

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Once you get over the hill next to Bagla you are in Aspat. The famous local traditional song of Çökertme tells of this region. The cove for many years was a shelter for pirates. The castle was built as a monitoring point. The old stone building on the shore is believed to have been constructed by an Arab official from the island of Crete.

Aspat Bay or Aspat Koyü is a pleasant place to anchor. There are several restaurants ashore. During the day there are a lot of boats from Bodrum In the evening these boats leave but the loud music from the shore establishments start. Anchor in 7 m. Reasonable holding.

Those who come with their yachts love this region as it is closed to the north west winds. It has fresh drinking water available for those who come themselves or by Yachts.

ASPAT BEACH
Rising out of the shores of the Aegean and mentioned often in Turkish folk music, the real name of Aspat is Aspartos. Evliya Çelebi writes of Aspat in his Chronicles. Built upon a barren rock, the perimeter of Aspat Castle measures 700 paces. Here one may see the remains of a civilizations dating back to the Classic Age and continuing up until the present day.

Aspat Bay is very popular mainly with private yacht owners as it is naturally protected from strong winds, the bays name is famous among the Turkish people as it is mentioned in an old folk song.

Visitors can be sailed to from Bagla Bay.

Places to Visit
King Mausolus built the ancient city of Termera here and up on the hill are the ruins of the   Castle of Aspat, which acted as a lookout point for pirates for many years when they occupied the cove; it is possible to walk up there, although it’s a rather difficult hike and takes about one hour to reach. There is also an old stone building at the shoreline that is believed to have been built by and Arab official who came from the Greek Island of Crete.

Akyarlar is in the often overlooked south-western corner of the Bodrum Peninsula, and is due south of Turgutreis. Akyarlar has a secluded bay, with a birds eye view of the tip of Cos Island. Akyarlar is also a anchor-stop, on day boats from Turgutreis taking the southern tour, and we stopped here for afternoon tea and cake during our trip. In the afternoons, this part of the Peninsula can get decidedly windy.

Akyarlar is situated at the south-western part of Bodrum Peninsula facing the Greek Island of Cos The bay has a selection of restaurants and cafes, and there’s a small beach with loungers, as well as a small harbour jetty where you can take a day boats around this part of the coastline.

The cove of Akyarlar is in 22 km from the centre of Bodrum. It stretches between Akyarlar and Koca Points, one and a 1/2 km to the east. Akyarlar Point is the eastern end of the Bodrum Peninsula, where slices of white rocks form ravines. This is the closest point to the Greek island of Cos. The distance is only 5 kilometres. Akyarlar, which is located on the eastern shore of the cove, used to be a village of fishermen and sponge divers.

Care is needed on the rocky shallows Paşa Kayalıkları on the west and the reefs extending out 200 meters from the middle part of the peninsula ended with Koca Burun. Once you get to the waterfront there is the fisherman’s cottage on the right and restaurants in the centre and the moon shaped beach on the left.

HARBOUR

There is a shelter for fishing boats. The bottom is sand. Drop your anchor off the beach in the depths of 4 - 8 meters, pay attention that you are not obstructing shelter entry. Ease your chain carefully. Depts suddenly shallow to marshland. Crowded anchorage in summer. A large number of boats swing at anchor. Affords shelter from westerlies but, it is open to southerlies.

Karaincir lies between Koca Burun on the north and Aspat Bay / Aspat Castle on the west. Affords good shelter from breeze. The bay is surrounded by summer sites and restaurants. There are a few piers for the excursion boats of the restaurants. Karaincir is a favorite destination for daily boats of Bodrum. You can anchor in depths of 3 - 10 m. Strong winds send swell in. The bottom is good for holding. The water is cooler because of spring water sources.

Karaincir is a small village near Akyarlar on the south-west of the Bodrum Peninsula. Karaincir’s proximity to Aspat Hill and Koca Point, means it has a buffer on both sides from the off-shore winds. It’s nestled in the corner of this cove, making it an ideal sheltered cove for swimming. Karaincir is a quiet place where you can spend hours by sitting on the sandy beach and watching blue Aegean waters.

The sea floor goes slightly deeper as you walk toward the open sea. The shallow sea zone is quite long enough to have fun with your friends or children by playing games in the middle of the sea. The shore is divided between different restaurants and beach clubs. Each have their own sunbeds for their customers. They all offer food and soft / hard drinks. It’s better to be thirsty or hungry because if you want to use those sunbeds, you need to drink or eat something. Just check their prices before deciding where to seat.

Karaincir bay is a favorite layover port. There are a few piers along the coastline where you can sunbathe.

Kargı Koyu lies on the north of Bağla Point on the west. An entertainment peculiar to the region is riding on a camel on the beach. The beach, apart from being popular with those who want a swim.

The piers along the shore are not adequate for berthing. They are for tripper boats. Kargı Cove, which is on the western end of the wide cove to the north of Baglar Point is very sheltered and has a very fine sandy beach.

This tranquil cove provides all-round shelter. Drop anchor in 4-12 meters. Good holding. Crowded anchorage in summer because of holiday makers.

One of the medium-level difficult dive sites around the Bordum peninsula. The surface and deep streams are usually strong. It's a wall-type dive which starts from the south-eastern cove of the island. Reef structures are formed and species of Moray, Congar Eel, Groupers and Barracudas can be observed. Rarely, Caretta Caretta sea turtles can be seen at the bottom. Very joyful dive site.

Kargı Adası
GPS : 37°00'37.2"N 27°21'37.4"E / 37.010342, 27.360385

The island of Kargı is about one and a half hours sail from Bodrum or 500 metres off Akyarlar Point. This island is the closest point to the Greek island of Cos (3.5 sea miles). On the top of the island is a lighthouse.

The diving point is the side that faces the gulf, though there are other points suitable for diving. In the area facing towards Kos, at a depth of five to 25 metres, there are pieces of amphorae that are possibly related to a Roman ship wreck from the 4th century AD. The interesting part of diving here is the perpendicular rocks which are towering like hills from the bottom to the surface on the shores, on the hill 50 metres distance from the shores, the shallows out to 17 metres from the surface.

The waters off the coast of the island are 20 - 22 metres in depth, with rocks at 36 metres. Fish here are also plentiful. You can certainly see many shoals of sea bream and barracuda. The only disadvantage to this location for diving are the strong currents at certain times of the year towards the island of Kos.

GÜMBET COVE ANCHORAGE

Bodrum - Muğla - Turkey

GPS : 37°01'20.8"N 27°23'49.0"E / 37.022435, 27.396954

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Gümbet is the most popular holiday destination on the Bodrum Peninsula. Its long beach (the best on the peninsula). This bay is the nearest bay to Bodrum on the western side of the peninsula. This large bay, surrounded by holiday sites and hotels, adjoins Bodrum.

Gumbet is a lively beach resort and a popular tourist destination on the Aegean coast of Turkey, 3 km from famous Bodrum resort, in the Muğla Province. When a small and quiet village that peacefully inhabited this heavenly cove between the pine-forested mountains and glittering topaz-blue bay was discovered by the sun-hungry holidaymakers, it was quickly submerged by a myriad of excellent hotels, apartments, bars, cafes, pubs, restaurants, nightclubs, shops and tourist facilities.

This once unknown retreat has been transformed into a holidaymaker’s paradise and one of the most popular tourist resorts in Turkey, as its curved kilometres of golden sand, excellent restaurants, nightclubs, water sports opportunities and safe swimming make partygoers and families alike flock to this stunning resort. It also draws in people who are after the frenzied nightlife of neighbouring resort of Bodrum, but who want to have a room next to a beautiful beach to stroll out onto in the morning.

Fish and seafood lovers should head down to the beachfront where the impressive restaurants specialize in serving freshly caught fish that will be cooked to perfection and delivered to your table with a crispy salad.

You can anchor outside the buoys in depth of 5 to 8 m. The bottom is weed and sand. The east side of the bay, close to shore, is shallow and marshy. The western side of the bay is known as Asarlı Koy. Reefs extend about 40 m out from the the point on the north.

A pier on the east is always occupied.
