Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Nergis Koyu is 6.5 miles from the north west of Teke Point. It indents to the north. Nergis Koyu is the prettiest and safest anchorage of Sarpdere Port. It stands on the east side of the entry. The bay ends in a nice beach.

Depths in the bay gradually shelve ashore. Nergis Bay provides all round shelter though northerly winds rarely send in a swell. Nergis is the most attractive and peaceful with good depths for anchoring and water clear as glass.

However, an uncomfortable chop develops with strong northerly winds as there is a fetch of nearly a mile across the bay. Anchor in 4 metres in sand with patches of weed. The holding is good although the sand in parts is firm and it needs a good burst on the engine to dig the anchor in.

The settings are very attractive. The bottom is so clear; you can see many hues of blue. Do not miss lingering in this unique environment.

SARPDERE LİMANI ANCHORAGE

Sarpdere, Urla - İzmir - Turkey

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Sarpdere Liman is a bay about 1 nM NW of Kirkdilim Limanı.

There are three anchorages:
West Creek : 38°11'09.6"N 26°31'02.4"E / 38.186000, 26.517333
East Creek  : 38°10'55.2"N 26°31'14.4"E / 38.182000, 26.520667

Sarpdere Limani is a small coastal settlement surrounded by low wooded hills. There are new, rather expensive holiday houses to the left of the original homes and goats were heard clanging their bells as they wandered the scrubby bush.

Sarpdere has two coves, the W creek is used by a religious camp who have built ugly concrete blocks and is rather unattractive although the shelter is good. The E cove is prettier, but it is dominated by large high tension power lines which spoil its natural beauty.

Nergis is the most attractive and peaceful of the three, with good depths for anchoring and water clear as glass. However, an uncomfortable chop develops with strong northerly winds as there is a fetch of nearly a mile across the bay.

In all three anchorages, anchor in 4 metres in sand with patches of weed. The holding is good although the sand in parts is firm and it needs a good burst on the engine to dig the anchor in.

KIRKDİLİM LİMANI ANCHORAGE

Urla - İzmir - Turkey

GPS : 38°07'00.0"N 26°34'30.0"E / 38.116667, 26.575000

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Kırkdilim Limanı lies on the west of Teke Point; it indents to the northwest about 1.5 miles. The bay ends in a beach. The bay is surrounded by mountains and winds may blow stronger because of cross - currents. This is a large and very pleasant, deserted cove, with very clear waters.

You're right in the middle of "nothing", just surrounded by the rocky mountain slopes covered by scattered trees. There are some goats roaming through the mountains.

The anchorage gives better protection than one expects when entering the fjord like bay, it seems like it's completely open to the south. At the end of the bay, there is a slight bend and this bit of headland gives some protection from the south.

The anchorage is very well protected for northerly winds. If the wind changed to south, at first it was no problem, but by the afternoon a bit of a wave coming into the bay. So probably with calm southerly winds you would be OK here, but not with strong southerlies.

Boats can anchor off the beach in depths of 3 - 8 meters. The bottom is sand. The bay provides shelter from northerly winds but is open to southerlies. Go to the NW end of the cove and anchor in 7 m, good holding.

In the middle of the cove there is large buoy where a Turkish patrol boat ties up sometimes. Do not tie to the large buoy, it is used by the Turkish patrol boats.

Care is required at night.

A rough path goes to the town road.

Gök Liman is a deep fjord about 2 Nm NE of Teke Burnu. It is an incredible beautiful anchorage. Gök Liman is on the western part of Gulf of Sığacık. It is one of the nicest spot in the area with its wild nature. There is a ship buoy at the entry. Care is needed at night. Gök Liman affords all round shelter.

North Creek
This is the most protected anchorage but it is now less attractive because of the fish farms. It is best to drop the anchor in about 15 m depth (good holding) and to take a line from the bow to the E shore. The cove on the west affords good shelter.

The bottom is sand, it efforts good holding. The depth in the middle is around 9 - 11 meters, it gradually shelves ashore. Boats drop anchor in 4 - 6 meters and take a line ashore.

East Creek
This anchorage is deep and only one or two boats can be accommodated. Try to anchor in 10 m and possibly take a line ashore. The holding here is less reliable than in the North Creek.

SIĞACIK CASTLE
It was constructed by Palak Mustafa Paşa by using stones brought from the ruins of Teos upon the order of Suleiman the Magnificent (Kanuni Sultan Süleyman) when its important strategic position in Aegean Sea was discovered by Sea Captain (Kaptan-ı Derya) Piri Reis. Its current condition comes from the years 1521-1522. The castle which was called "Sığla" formerly was used as naval base instead of defense purposes. The castle has three different gates called Kuşadası, Ayasuluk and Seferihisar.

A bailey and a keep, called as ward where soldiers live and are trained, exist in the naval base, and two towers and two gates exist at the part of this keep overlooking the sea. Second floors of certain houses rise on the castle walls; and some house walls and windows and stones brought from Teos are seen between walls. There are battlements having the size 1.20 x 50cm at 3m intervals at courtyard walls of towers facing the north; however some of them are closed currently.

CIVIT CASTLE
The castle which was constructed on a small islet at the west of the town upon the order of Cüneyt, the ruler of Aydınoğulları, had its strongest period under the rule of Murat II, Sultan of the Ottoman Empire. The castle is completely ruined currently. People who want to see the castle can reach the islet by passing through the water having 25-30 cm depth which is at a distance of 80 m from the coast. People who want to reach the castle at the south part of the islet must climb 62 m. You must absolutely see the sunset in the region which offers indispensible views for nature enthusiasts.

ANTIQUE TEOS
Teos, which is located at the seaside at 1 km south of Sığacık Village having 5 km distance to Seferihisar District of ızmir, was founded as an Ionian colony in 1000 B.C. approximately. Its founder is known as Athames, the son of Dionysus. Teos was under the rule of Persians at first, Lydia subsequently, and then Persians again. Teos gained its independence with Ionians and became an important place in trade and architecture.

Ruins of Hellenistic and Roman period exist in Teos. The most important antique building in Teos that is open to visit is Temple of Dionysus which is the biggest of the ancient world. Other important ruins are Agora, theater, Odeon, city walls and port ruins. One of the prettiest towns in the Aegean region, Teos was threatened by the silting of its harbor - even so, some ruins that reveal its identity can be found. The ancient ruins are in the southern part of the existing town.

Teos was one of the most important cities of Ionia. It was spread over a hill that was to be the Acropolis, and extended south to the harbor. The temple, which dates from the 2nd century B.C., was the city’s largest building; it was dedicated to Dionysus. The remains of the Hellenistic walls, the theatre, and the Odeon can still be seen. Towards the end of 3rd century B.C., Teos became known as an active artistic cultural centre. It was the first seat of the Ionian actors who performed at various places. The most famous native of Teos was the lyric poet Anacreon (570 to 478 B.C.).

SPAS AND HOT SPRINGS
Spas and Hot Springs: Main places in the status of spa among many hot springs within the borders of our town are springs known as Karakoç and Cumali Spas, Uyuz and Ahmetçi Baths, Gelinboğan and Hamamönü Spas.

Karakoç Spas: The spas located on Eski Kavakdere - İrkmez road are at 15 m height above the sea level and were very famous in Hellenistic Roman and Byzantine periods as well.
Radioactivity of the main spring feeding Karakoç Spa is 9,5 eman, radioactivity of sludge is 4,7 eman, radioactivity of cold water is 8,7 and 6,2 eman. All springs in the region of Karakoç Spas are alkaline waters with bicarbonate and sodium chloride.

Uyuz Spa: Its temperature is 55 degrees and reaction is acid and salt water. 297 mgr free CO2 gas exists per liter. Its radioactivity is 4,3 eman.

Gelinboğan Spa: Temperature of water originating from a spring having 3 lt/sec. flow rate is 68 degrees; its chemical characteristic is the same as Uyuz Baths.

Ahmetçi Bath: Temperatures of two springs are 55 - 57 degrees. Plenty of iron elements exist in this spa as in others.

Hamamönü Spa : Chemical characteristics of the spa located at about 1 km distance to the sea are identical. It has nearly the same characteristics as Balçova Spas. These waters were brought to historical bath in Karaköse and to baths that remained below the ground behind Amarante Hotel through pipes in the ancient era. Flow rate of this spa is very high, too. Unfortunately, waters originating from springs in an area of 150 m2 currently flow uselessly.

Siğack is a former fishing harbor which has been converted into a full service, 480-berth marina. The marina is a safe place to leave the boat and visit nearby ancient Teos. Coast Guard boat and office between the old fishing harbour and the marina.

Danger : The northern tip of Eşek Adası is rocky. They are submerged rock, and the rocks extend to the north 80 meters. Careful plotting is required. Do not pass between Eşek Adası and the mainland. It is too shallow. Also on the N side of Eşek Adası there is a reef. Give it a wide berth.

Northerly blowing winds are predominant in the gulf. It wakes up by noon time and dies off late afternoon. Winds blow stronger between Points Teke and Doğanbey and builds up heavy seas.

It is possible to anchor off in the bay. In addition to the marina it is possible to anchor in the bay outside, where there is a good sheltered anchorage west of the small boat moorings. Outside the harbour walls, to the north east, are two bays.

The larger, more southerly one is largely filled with mooring balls and small boats, though there is space to anchor between them. However it gets shallow to the East.

The smaller more northerly cove has a small jetty off the north shore. Again, eastwards is shallow, but anchoring in about 5-7m provides nice protection from the Meltemi, although even with the wind from the North or North East there is still some small swell that works its way into the cove. The bottom is silt, sand and weed but seems to give good holding.

TEOS COVE ANCHORAGE

Sığacık, Seferihisar - İzmir - Turkey

GPS : 38°10'04.0"N 26°47'47.3"E / 38.167780, 26.796477

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

This large bay is fringed by low-key (quiet) beach clubs and gated communities. It is divided into two parts by an island, Çiçek Adası, that is connected to the mainland by a sunken causeway. At the landward end of this causeway there is sufficient depth to cross it with a dinghy and outboard.

Danger : Give a wide berth to the reefs that extend off the south end of the Çiçek Adası. Note also that there is a sandy shoal (2 m) right in the middle of the northern half of the bay.

The bay provides excellent protection from the Meltemi but is exposed to the south. The bottom is mostly thick poseidonia grass, making anchoring a bit of a challenge. The key is to hunt for the patches of sand that do provide good holding, but may be in quite shallow water. The northern half of the bay has the sandy beaches, the southern half is fringed with shallow rocks.

The bay is excellent for windsurfing, having smooth water and being surrounded on three sides by low lying land, which means little in the way of land-induced gusts and shifts. However, getting ashore with a dinghy is more problematic. There are two fishing boat docks to which a dinghy can be tied and locked. One is at the very northern end.

However, apart from a small beach club and gated community there is nothing ashore except a long road north to Akkum (several big resorts) and Siğacık.

The other is about 500 m East of the causeway 38°09'50.9"N 26°48'49.1"E / 38.164132, 26.813641. This is the community of Akarca known to people in Siğacık as 'the beaches'. From here (shore side of the road) there are minibuses that run to Seferihisar, from where one can take another to Izmir, Siğacık, or other destinations. Note that the waterfront road that goes north along the beach does not  connect through to the other dinghy dock. Also there is no direct transport between this bay and Siğacık.

There does not appear to be any provisioning stores in this locality, so shopping trips would require a trip to Seferihisar, which has a large market on Fridays.

Good cell phone connection.

The bay is excellent for windsurfing, having smooth water and being surrounded on three sides by low lying land, which means little in the way of land-induced gusts and shifts.

TEOS

Teos or Teo was an ancient Greek city on the coast of Ionia, on a peninsula between Chytrium and Myonnesus. It was founded by Minyans from Orchomenus, Ionians and Boeotians, but the date of its foundation is unknown. Teos was one of the twelve cities which formed the Ionian League. The city was situated on a low hilly isthmus. Its ruins are located to the south of the modern town Sığacık in the Seferihisar district of Izmir Province, Turkey.

History
Pausanias writes that the city was founded by Minyans from Orchomenus under the leadership of Athamas, a descendant of Athamas the son of Aeolus. Later on they were joined by Ionians and more colonists from Athens and Boeotia. Teos was a flourishing seaport with two fine harbours until Cyrus the Great invaded Lydia and Ionia (c. 540 BC). The Teans found it prudent to retire overseas, to the newly founded colonies of Abdera in Thrace and Phanagoria on the Asian side of the Cimmerian Bosporus. The port was revived by Antigonus Cyclops.

During the times of the Roman emperors, the town was noted for its wine, a theatre and Temple of Dionysus. These are positioned near the acropolis, which is situated on a low hill and had fortifications by the 6th century. A shipwreck near Tektaş, a small rock outcrop near Teos harbour, dates from the Classical period (around the 6th to the 4th centuries BC) and implies trading connections by sea with eastern Aegean Islands.

It was a member of the Lydian group of the Ionian League, one of the four groups defined by Herodotus, based on the particular dialects of the cities. It was the birthplace of Anacreon the poet, Hecateus the historian, Protagoras the sophist, Scythinus the poet, Andron the geographer, Antimachus the epic poet and Apellicon, the preserver of the works of Aristotle. Epicurus reportedly grew up in Teos and studied there under Nausiphanes, a disciple of Democritus. Vitruvius notes Hermogenes of Priene as the architect of the monopteral temple of Dionysus at Teos.

The site today
The modern village of Sığacık is situated close to the ruins of Teos. The interior of what was previously the city has now been intensively farmed, which makes it difficult to excavate the site. Through ploughing, pottery has been brought to the surface of the earth, which has been collected through archaeological survey.

GPS : 38°09'50.9"N 26°48'49.1"E / 38.164132, 26.813641

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Akarca is a very peaceful holiday resort by the sea with beautiful blue flag water and nice, clean and fresh weather. The place is not as densely populated as most Turkish holiday resorts such as Çeşme, Kuşadası, Bodrum etc.

It has a beautiful view, blue flag sea all along its coast, most fresh air blowing from Kaz Mountains (to the north) and certainly very friendly people as well.

It is also very close less than 10 km to Sıgacık (with yacht harbour) which is becoming one of the most attractive tourism spots of Turkey, gradually.

BÖLME (KÖRMEN) ISLAND ANCHORAGE

Seferihisar - İzmir - Turkey

GPS : 38°01'50.0"N 26°51'57.0"E / 38.030569, 26.865847

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

On approach watch out for the rocks that jut out from both the west side of the entrance to the cove, and to the north of Körmen / Bölme Adası island. No cell phone reception. No buildings in sight ashore.

There is a snug anchorage just north east of Bölme Adası where you can anchor in 5 meters in sand and weed. Shelter is good from the meltemi, although the anchorage is open to the south. It is a convenient stop when planning to cross the gulf of Siğacık and avoids the usual slog to windward up to Siğacık or Teos when cruising along this coast.

There is room for 4 or 5 boats at anchor when it is empty, however be aware that this is a popular stop for tourist boats who come in and tie up to the rocks on the west, or the beach to the north.

In the rocks to the west is a small cave. If you snorkel there you will discover bubbles of gas coming from the seabed, and warm water! There are a number of hot springs under there - hence the tourist attraction.
