Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

HISTORICAL PLACES

AKKALE
Akkale (also called Tırtar Akkale where Tırtar is the former name of Kumkuyu) is situated to south west of Kumkuyu at 36°32′N 34°13′E. Its distance to Erdemli is 14 kilometres (8.7 mi) and to Mersin is 51 kilometres (32 mi). The buildings are accessible by a short lane from the Turkish state highway D.400. The distance to Mediterranean Sea coast is about 250 metres (820 ft). Although the popular name Akkale means "White castle", actually the complex is not a castle.

It consists of the ruins of big building which was once a five-storey building, a small single-dome building and a large cistern. The five storey building is rightfully called palace, for it was used both as the office and the lodging building of the governor. The corbels which are on all sides of the building indicate the existence of a now completely-demolished balcony which circumscribed the building. The main staircase of the building was a spiral staircase. The small building was the treasury office and the office documents were kept in the basement of the building. The cistern is one of the biggest cisterns of Cilicia with over 17,000 square metres (180,000 sq ft). It was used to sell water to ships.

KANLIDİVANE
Kanlıdivane means "bloody crazy". This may refer to the red color of the surrounding soil. The name may also refer to a dreadful legend according to which the criminals had been executed by throwing into the sinkhole during Roman times. Every year during Mersin International Music Festival, one or two outdoor concerts are held in Kanlıdivane. The audiences and performers sit at the opposite sides of the sinkhole. (During such concerts Metropolitan municipality of Mersin add free bus trips to Kanlıdivane.)

Kanlıdivane (ancient Canytelis) is an ancient city situated around a big sinkhole in Mersin Province, Turkey. Kanlıdivane is in the rural area of Erdemli district, which is a part of Mersin Province. It is 18 km (11 mi) to Erdemli and 55 km (34 mi) to Mersin. Its altitude is approximately 230 m (750 ft). It is close to the town Kumkuyu at the coast and just few hundred meters to Çanakçı rock tombs. The sinkhole is quite wide; the longer dimension being 130 m (430 ft). The depth is about 70 m (230 ft)

Kanlıdivane was a part of the Olba kingdom in the ancient age. In the northern necropolis, there is a mausoleum, which was built by the Queen Aba for her husband and sons. On the inscription of the tower at south-west it reads; "Built by Teukros, the son of priest king Tarkyaris of Olba for Zeus." By the first century, Olba kingdom became a part of Roman Empire. Byzantine Emperor Theodosius II rebuilt the city as a Christian religious center and renamed it Neapolis. There are ruins of basilicas, cisterns, rock cut graves etc. around the sinkhole.

ÇANAKÇI ROCK TOMB
Çanakçı rock tombs are a group of rock-carved tombs in Mersin Province, Turkey.

Çanakçı tombs are a few hundred meters west of Kanlıdivane sink hole. The general altitude of the area is around 225 m (738 ft). They are sculpted on rocks on the southern side of a road running parallel to Datça-Mersin highway and the Mediterranean coastline at an altitude a few meters above the level of the road. The distance to Kumkuyu town is 6 km (3.7 mi) to Erdemli is 19 km (12 mi) and to Mersin is 56 km (35 mi).

The tombs were carved in around 2nd century AD, during Roman Empire period. Each tomb has a rectangular opening. On some of the openings there are inscriptions which condemn potential tomb thieves . Also on some tombs human figures are carved, unquestionably belonging to the bodies in the tombs. In two niches there are 3 human figures in each and in one niche there is one human figure.
