Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

BUTTERFLY VALLEY COVE ANCHORAGE

Fethiye - Muğla - Turkey

GPS : 36°29'55.6"N 29°07'14.5"E / 36.498780, 29.120706

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Butterfly Valley is a natural site located at Ölüdeniz, Fethiye district. Surrounded by up to 350 metres of steep rocks, the valley takes its name from more than 80 different species of butterflies that lives here. The waterfall that falls from 50 metres to valley, reaches to Mediterranean as a stream flowing in the middle of the valley.

The valley is isolated from the outside world by steep cliffs and the sea; thus pollution is prevented. Added the environment friendly attitudes of the valley management and the steps taken to protect and preserve the valley made Butterfly Valley kind of a wild life park.

That’s the reason why the valley hosts this vast butterfly population compared to other locations. The most seen species, Jersey Tiger butterflies (Eupoglia Quadripunctaria) lives in moist and hidden corners of Mediterranean; thus the waterfall and the stream are natural habitats for butterflies.

World Heritage Foundation
Butterfly Valley, like Ölüdeniz, Kıdrak and Kabak is one of the coves located at the skirts of Babadağ, which has been declared to be in the list of 100 mountains to be preserved by World Heritage Foundation due to richness of endemic plants. Babadağ and the coves are under legal conservation by Cultural and Natural Heritage Preservation Board.

Example Model
By the legal preservation status and the unique topography of the valley, Butterfly Valley stayed away from the negative impacts of mass tourism but extra effort is needed against this threat. The perspective of the valley management shows this efforts. Ecological agriculture, ecological tourism, and events like culture – arts – sports are concentrated on.  Instead of customer, we have guests or regulars which makes everyone participate. Thus, the valley carry on to be a pioneer and example location in preserving with success.

There are permaculture practices at the valley. In addition you can see many species that grow naturally like oreganos, bays, oleanders, chaste trees, pomegranates, wild grapes, carobs, olives and St. John’s worth plants.

The history of Butterfly Valley, the cooperative and the mission
The Valley has been used as a port for the Perdikya village (today Faralya) in Lycian era (BC 3 – 400). After Byzantian era until Ottoman Greeks, the valley has been used by building houses, church, a road to canyon and sustaining walls.

After the Greek exchange, the land of the valley has been sold to different individuals. In 1960’s one of the land owners, cut down all the old citrus, berry and other fruit trees. The last owner of the valley is Anatolia Tourism Development Cooperative (S.S. Anadolu Turizm Geliştirme Kooperatifi) and since their first time at the valley in 1987, they are trying to grow more trees despite the mountain goats.

Where does the Butterfly Valley name come from?
The local name for the valley is Güdürümsu. In 1987, Hasan Deniz Bayramoğlu began to use the name of Butterfly Valley inspired by a painter, photographer and entomologist Rifat Kılar, who was fascinated by the butterflies and called the place Butterfly Valley.

Since than, the valley is known as Butterfly Valley. The management of the valley, adopted nature compatible life. The managements worked on ecological solutions from organic agriculture practices to biological disposal of sewage water. Since 2015, the valley is managed by Anatolia Tourism Development Cooperative (S.S. Anadolu Turizm Geliştirme Kooperatifi) without renting it to 3rd parties.

Butterfly Valley (Turkish: Kelebekler Vadisi) is a valley in Fethiye district of Muğla Province, southwestern Turkey, which is home to diverse butterfly species. The valley is situated at the foothill of Babadağ, a 1,975 m (6,480 ft)-high mountain nominated for preservation as world heritage.

A wide-strip sand beach at a bay on the Turkish Riviera protrudes from the valley.

In the form of a narrow canyon stretching over around 3 - 4 km (1.9 - 2.5 mi), the valley's steep walls are 350 - 400 m (1,150 - 1,310 ft) high. A trail in the valley leads to two small waterfalls dropping from 60 m (200 ft) all the year around. In the middle of the valley, a creek runs, carrying water from a spring in nearby Faralya village to the sea. A road from Ölüdeniz to Uzunyurt, which is part of the Lycian Way Ultramarathon route, runs atop the rocks around the valley.

The valley, rich in flora and fauna, takes its name from the large number of butterfly species found here. Scientists recorded some 147 flora species belonging to 54 families and 105 butterfly species from 15 families native to the valley. The butterfly species include the Jersey tiger (Euplagia quadripunctaria rhodosensis). Butterfies of many varieties in a wide range of colors can be observed in the valley between June and September.

Due to its natural beauty, Butterfly Valley is an important ecotourism attraction place in Turkey. It is accessible by shuttle boat service from Belceğiz Beach of Ölüdeniz in 5 - 7 km (3.1 - 4.3 mi) distance, operating hourly at daytime. In the valley, various outdoor activities such as camping, hiking, canyoning, canoeing and scuba diving can be performed. The valley is open to public the entire year.

Designated a nature reserve as protected area of first category on February 8, 1995, any type of construction in Butterfly Valley is strictly prohibited by law. Therefore, only temporary structures are allowed here. On an area of 10 daa (10,000 m2), up to 250 people can be accommodated in tents in addition to a few simple wooden bungalows. Central sanitary facilities are for shared use.

There are no accommodation facilities at the Butterfly Valley beach. You can set up a tent or stay in makeshift bush and leaf covered shelters. There is one restaurant set up on the beach in summertime. The owners will help you, showing the paths to follow. Electricity is supplied by a generator, available free of charge during certain times of the day. A small country restaurant and a bar provide food and beverages in the summer time.

Blue Voyage yachts cruise in and drop anchor for lunch and a swim, and hikers pass above the valley along the Lycian Way that leads, farther along, eventually to Antalya.

From the secluded beach at the entrance to the verdant gorge that leads to a 20 m waterfall at the back, the setting is simply delightful. Although there is a well-trodden path to the waterfall it’s a good idea to bring waterproof shoes, as some wading through the streambed is necessary.

The valley is rocky and pine tree covered, is a bit hard for climbing but it gives you an astonishing feeling to see millions of butterflies covering the trees and rocks like a soft colourful scarf. At first, you do not notice them at all and you think it is the natural look of the place. However, with one sound or movement the butterflies take off, covering the sky and casting a shadow over the valley.

ÇÖKERTME COVE ANCHORAGE

Milas - Muğla - Turkey

GPS : 36°59'46.1"N 27°47'33.3"E / 36.996130, 27.79257

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

The Gulf of Gökova, which is the 50 mile deep inlet between the Bodrum peninsula to the north and the Datça peninsula to the south. Çökertme is a favorite layover port for the chartering boats. Çökertme also known as Fesiliyen Koyu or Vasilika. It’s an attractive spot, hemmed in by high precipitous slopes covered with pine trees and olive groves on the lower slopes. The small hamlet perches on the sand at the foot of the slopes and has a reputation for being a welcoming place to stop-over on a Çökertme yacht charter.

Çökertme is a wide cove located on the north side of the Gökova Gulf, between the Kepçe Cape and Karaburun. There is a small village of Çökertme by the shore. The shore is quite long. The region is a well protected area against the strong winds so that the yachts mostly prefer this region for mooring.

The bay takes its the name from village in the harbor. Çökertme is quite sheltered against winds from the west to the north and east. Çökertme is one of the most preferred bays in Gokova by yachtsmen. Its coast is very long, the shores of the island are covered with pines and olive trees.

Çökertme is subject to heritage conservation programme, to preserve its identity. Çökertme still carries some of the charm being fishing and carpet-weaving village. There are carpet and kilim stands in the village. A road goes in for about 3 km to Bozalan Village where you can see carpet-weaving examples and enjoy stupendous view of Çökertme and Gökova.

An excellent sail here today passing Bodrum and some very pretty coastline to Çökertme Koyu, a big inlet with three restaurant jetties. You are bound to find a good bunch of like-minded charterers with whom to shoot the breeze late into the night in one of the waterfront restaurants. There are restaurants with piers along the shore. These piers afford adequate shelter from southerlies. The bottom is weed.

Pine and olive trees surround the bay. the coves by the western end, intending to the north  afford sheltering from westerly and northerly blowing winds. You can be anchored in 10 - 15 meters and get aline ashore. The cove on the north is more shallow. Boats can be anchored off in 5 - 10 meters with a line ashore or pushed off if it is not packed.

It is an attractive cove but it is subject to strong gusts. Anchor in 2 - 5 m. The bottom is sand and weed and there could be a problem with holding, so take a line ashore. Alternatively, pick up a laid mooring on one of the three restaurant pontoons. With an onshore southerly it is best to anchor off in the western cove, as big incoming waves make the restaurant pontoons very uncomfortable.

There are several anchorages in the bay. Çökertme provides adequate anchorage from southerlies. Slipways of the village are located here. Reefs extend out from the islet in the middle and the depths on the west of this islet are shallow to the coast. A stream goes into sea.

Village Quay
GPS : 37°00'18.2"N 27°47'29.2"E / 37.005054, 27.791449
A finger tip extends in the middle towards west. A quay and the floating pier of the village here afford the most adequate sheltering. There are laid moorings tailed on pier which provide berthing up to 30 boats. Water and electricty are available. A fee is charged. All the piers in the village are administrated by the village authority.

Boats go stern to piers there laid moorings tailed on. The depths are sufficient at the head of the piers. There are several piers along to shore infront of the restaurants, you can also go stern-to on these piers. Boats also can be pushed off. The bottom is sand. Good holding. Boats can also go up to the shores of the entry of the bay and drop anchor behind shallow area in 10 - 20 m and take a line ashore. This part is quite and ideal for those loving serenity.

Mooring
The best place to anchor is in the western side of the cove with a line ashore to the west side or closer in with a line ashore to the beach.
There are a number of laid moorings which can be used if free.
The bottom is mud, sand and weed with poor holding in places.
In calm weather you can anchor off the hamlet though depths drop off quickly.

Çökertme beach side is on the eastern part where there are restaurants with piers. Staff will help you to tie up. There are laid moorings of restaurants tailed on piers. Southerlies send swell in.

Water and electricity are available. Fuel can be obtained. Limited provisions can be found.

In the Middle Ages the island, which the Greeks know under the name of Arkos, was taken over by the Knights of St. John Hospitaller, who also occupied Bodrum. It was conquered by the Ottoman Empire in the 16th century. In 1919 it was occupied by the Italians. The 1932 Convention between Italy and Turkey assigned it to Turkey.

At the back of the island there are many coves and beaches competing in beauty with each other. One and a half kilometres to the to east of Poyraz Port and to the north of Yassı Island is Adalı Cove, while one and a half kilometres to east of Tavşan Point stretches Çemberci Cove. Both are much visited the boats as the bottom sand and sea is very clean.

There is curative hot water on the north, you can be anchored in the front in 7 - 8 meters. The bottom is sand.

Famous for its healing mineral springs. The water comes out of a cave and the mud from the cave is said to be good for skin condition. Most important it is claimed that Cleopatra made use of this mud to preserve her beauty. Women in particular put this mud on their faces to emulate the Egyptian queen. After the mud pack you enter the thermal waters springing up in the cave and then throw yourself into the blue waters of the sea.

RESTAURANT

On the seaside there is a small motel and restaurant. The boats pull up to the wooden jetty, and you can hop onto dry land for a quick drink or snack. You sat on the upper balcony to the left of the jetty to savour your corn on the cob!  It was a great vantage point to look back at Bodrum, and appreciate the Aegean.

DIVING

There are eight diving spots around Karaada. They are favorite for divers. Some interesting names like Kaçakçılar or Kabarcık Mağarası, carry specific underwater characteristics. All foreign divers must be accompanied by licenced Turkish guide diver. Boats should take all necessary precautions while cruising in the diving zone to pay attention for buoys and reduce speed.

The coves facing to Kos Island on the south has become training area for the divers. The water is clear and depths are gradually gets deeper. Artificial reef and wrecks including coast guard boat at the depth of 17 - 26 m, C-47 Dakota airplane at the depth of 17 - 25 m and Navy-tanker vessel at the depth of 18 - 36 m, are the bottom. Attractive spot for divers.

Karaköy, the only village on the Datça peninsula facing the Gökova gulf. Karaköy is used as a pier for ferries in Körmen that ply the marine route from Bodrum. The quaintness of this village, combined with its quiet atmosphere, make Karaköy the ideal relaxing getaway.

There are no lights at the head of of the breakwaters. In strong winds, care is needed at the entrance to the larger basin-the considerable sea in these winds causes a confused swell at the entrance, and waves can break over the breakwater of the smaller inlet. The depths in the smaller inlet are 4 - 6 meters. The width between main breakwater and mole is 80 meters. Local fishing boats berth in the smaller inlet. The bottom is muddy. Good holding.

MARINA

Shelter
Located on the northern side of the Datça Yarımadası. This small harbour is on the S side of the bay by Ince Burnu, surrounded by mountains. Without a doubt, the most prominent harbor on Datça Peninsula is Körmen Harbor. Körmen Harbor provides decent year-round shelter against the wind. For this reason, it shelters boats from surrounding bays, too. It is an ideal place to windsurf, as well. The marina is now in full swing. All new premises with hard standing on concrete floor. Crane of 100 tons. Very well protected with high concrete wall around Marina. New and nice toilet buildings. Regular ferry to Bodrum and bus service to Datca every hour.

Approaching
Approaching from W & N; It may be a bit hard to discern the entrance From Akçalı Ada, Kormen Bay is 7 miles. Approaching from E; Ince Burun is conspicuous Korman Bay is hidden to the SW of Kaya Burnu Entrance to the marina is NW and not lit

Mooring
Vessels arriving at Körmen Harbor from Bodrum or Gökova moor up in one of two docks for fishing boats and yachts. In mooring, go stern-to or bow-to. The bottom is sand and weed and mostly good holding. Boats berth on the northern part of the large basin. Yachts can anchor and go stern-or bow-to the quay. An attendant will come and assist you to tie up.

Care need to be taken when making the harbour entrance in a swell. Berth at the quay, leaving the northern end free for the ferry, or moor stern-to on the northern breakwater. The holding is generally good.

Akyarlar is in the often overlooked south-western corner of the Bodrum Peninsula, and is due south of Turgutreis. Akyarlar has a secluded bay, with a birds eye view of the tip of Cos Island. Akyarlar is also a anchor-stop, on day boats from Turgutreis taking the southern tour, and we stopped here for afternoon tea and cake during our trip. In the afternoons, this part of the Peninsula can get decidedly windy.

Akyarlar is situated at the south-western part of Bodrum Peninsula facing the Greek Island of Cos The bay has a selection of restaurants and cafes, and there’s a small beach with loungers, as well as a small harbour jetty where you can take a day boats around this part of the coastline.

An Ottoman fortress on the summit of Mount Aspat and ruins of an old Greek chapel on the slope welcome the traveller to this old fishing village of Akyarlar. It ıs 18 kilometres from Bodrum and used to a popular Greek summer resort long time ago as there are many old houses lined on the shore.

Windsurfing is a very popular watersport in Akyarlar. Akyarlar has a very friendly and relaxed holiday atmosphere.

The cove of Akyarlar is in 22 km from the centre of Bodrum. It stretches between Akyarlar and Koca Points, one and a 1/2 km to the east. Akyarlar Point is the eastern end of the Bodrum Peninsula, where slices of white rocks form ravines. This is the closest point to the Greek island of Cos. The distance is only 5 kilometres. Akyarlar, which is located on the eastern shore of the cove, used to be a village of fishermen and sponge divers.

Care is needed on the rocky shallows Paşa Kayalıkları on the west and the reefs extending out 200 meters from the middle part of the peninsula ended with Koca Burun. Once you get to the waterfront there is the fisherman’s cottage on the right and restaurants in the centre and the moon shaped beach on the left.

HARBOUR

The bay consists of the small harbour at one end and a curving sandy beach sloping down into the incredible blue of the Aegean. Opposite Akyarlar, 5 kilometres across the strait, there lies the Greek Island Cos. There are regular services from this Island to Bodrum. The bay of Akyarlar has a small harbour at one end and a curving beach running from it. There are restaurants lining the shoreline serving excellent locally caught fish dishes.

There is a shelter for fishing boats. The bottom is sand. Drop your anchor off the beach in the depths of 4 - 8 meters, pay attention that you are not obstructing shelter entry. Ease your chain carefully. Depts suddenly shallow to marshland. Crowded anchorage in summer. A large number of boats swing at anchor. Affords shelter from westerlies but, it is open to southerlies.
