9 kilometres away from the village Çamlı, you may arrive to Boncuk Cove. The cove is very popular. It has a clean and comforting water. There is a facility on the shore for the visitors. The area is popular for swimming in a calm, quite and rocky are. The region between Boncuk Cove and Karaburun is the one and only observation area in Mediterranean for the sandbar sharks' fertility and growth.
Boncuk Cove Beach
This beach is 9 km from Çamlı (near Sedir Island) and is very popular for its clean and inviting waters with good facilities on the shoreline.
Sandbar Sharks
Boncuk Cove in Gulf of Gökova in Turkey is a rare and important nursery ground for sandbark sharks in the Mediterranean. Recent surveys in 2008 and 2012 clearly show that the cove is actively used by the species throughout the year as well as during the known breeding period in spring. In 2010 the Mediterranean Conservation Society (MCS) successfully established Turkey’s first No Fishing Zones (NFZ) in Gökova Bay, which includes Boncuk Cove and the surrounding coast where breeding sandbar sharks have been frequently observed.
However, illegal fishing is still prevalent due to a lack of effective management and enforcement within the NFZ network. This will monitor the sharks in-situ to develop a better understanding of this shy species. Finally, we will build on existing ranger patrols to extend their reach to include Boncuk Cove.
The existence of the sandbar sharks, which have unique importance and are harmless for human, is under threat by many factors. The Boncuk Cove in Gökova Bay is an important area for the Carcharhinus plumbeus species, namely sandbar sharks. The researches show that the sharks use this cove as a place for mating and reproduction especially in May and June.
Boncuk Cove, where people swam together with sharks, is one of the most interesting natural sites on entire world. Let alone harming the swimmers, sand sharks fear people, and come to Boncuk Cove in certain periods of the year in order to breed. During months of April, May and June, the cove is closed to visitors within the scope of shore protection works pursuant to United Nations Development Programme in order to ensure comfortable breeding and healthy reproduction of sand sharks that are in risk of extinction.
In the rest of year, Boncuk Cove, adorned with palm trees on its shore, serves as one of the most special coves in Aegean Sea thanks to its clear and refreshing water. Even though the cove is a private property, its owner keeps the site open for public via an entrance fee.
