Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

Kıyıkışlacık, is a village in the district of Muğla Milas. Kıyıkışlacık village in Milas Gulluk Gulf coast, opposite the town of Güllük is a large village. Kıyıkışlacık Village lies at the innermost point of the Gulf of Güllük north of the Bodrum peninsula in southwest Turkey, and is 18 km east of Milas. Across the water on the opposite shore Güllük can be seen. In the further distance other villages along the coast of the Bodrum peninsula are visible. Kıyıkışlacık is astonishingly peaceful and tranquil.

HARBOUR

Kıyıkışlacık indents to the north. Care is needed while entering into the bay because of the remains of ancient breakwater in the fairway. A Byzantine tower on starboard at the entry is spotted. This tower is connected to the shore. Reef of ancient breakwater extends to the middle from the western part of the tower. The shallow is indicated by stick or a buoy, but it should not be relied on. The depth in the middle is about 8 meters. Keep this breakwater on your port side, keep 15 - 20 meters distance while entering. These remains may not be seen in harsh weather.

The village is located on the coast where a natural port is formed and a narrow breakwater has been built in the entrance. This bay provides all-round shelter. Northerly blowing winds are predominant. Reef of ancient breakwater protects the bay from southerlies swell. The bottom is muddy. Good holding. The depths shelve to the shore. You can drop your anchor and swing, but we suggest yachtmen to drop anchor in 4 meters and go stern or bows on quay on the west.

PENSIONS

WEEKLY MARKET
Kıyıkışlacık does not have its own weekly market. Instead local people go to the market on Tuesdays and Fridays at Milas, the ancient Mylasa. People from all over the area, from as far as Söke and Bodrum visit this colorful and busy market, which also attracts many tourists during the summer months. As well as fruit, vegetables and other foodstuffs, a wide range of fabrics and table cloths and curtains trimmed with hand made lace and crochet are to be found here.

On the return journey to Kıyıkışlacık via Ovakışlacık you pass by the Temple of Zeus on the right hand side of the Söke road. This temple lay in the ancient city of Euromos, a name meaning "powerful", which in ancient times was second in importance only to Mylasa. This splendid temple was built in the 2nd century AD.

RESTAURANTS
Several seafront restaurants available for fish and other foods.

FISH MARKET
Fishing is the second most important source of income for the village, and probably predates even olive cultivation. The fact that the Roman mausoleum is referred to as the Fish Market bears witness to the importance of fishing in later times, as does the fact that the bell tower was used to announce that fish had arrived in the market.

FISH RESTAURANTS
Fishing is the second most important source of income for the village, and probably predates even olive cultivation. The abundance of fresh and cheap fish in Kıyıkışlacık is one of its main attractions. Every day people come here by boat from the opposite shore just to buy fish, and a meal at one of the fish restaurants on the seashore here is delightful. The view across the harbour of olive groves and Iassos's ruins as the setting sun paints the ancient stones with golden light is the perfect accompaniment to the delicious freshly caught fish.

FISH AND SEA PRODUCT SPECIES LIST OF THE AEGEAN SEA

OLIVES
Finding fine olives here was no surprise, since the last part of our journey to Kıyıkışlacık had been through olive groves, which covered the hillsides right down to the sea. The Aegean shores of Anatolia are the original home of the olive tree, which can live for one or even two thousand years, so these are youngsters by comparison. As the sun sinks towards the horizon the shadows of the olive trees fall on the ancient walls, merging trees and city in an inextricable embrace. Today olive cultivation is the principal occupation. Most of the olives are grown for oil, which is processed locally. They are large, oval in shape, and dark greenish brown in colour.

OLIVE OILS
The virgin extra oil from the first pressing is known as pure "sızma", and is the finest quality of all. It was this that was poured on our olives for breakfast, lending them that exquisite flavour. The village stands on one of the best sheltered coves in the area, enclosed on one side by olive clad slopes, and on the other by the small peninsula - formerly an island - where the ancient site of Iassos stands.

LOCAL AREA
Kıyıkışlacık is astonishingly peaceful and tranquil. Kıyıkışlacık, where the village and the ancient city of Iasos are intertwined. The villagers still use the ancient paths as a shortcut and their goats feed on the grass and they tie up their donkeys in these places.

Across the water on the opposite shore Güllük can be seen. In the further distance other villages along the coast of the Bodrum peninsula are visible. While the peninsula is Turkey's most popular holiday area thronged with visitors in summer, Kıyıkışlacık is astonishingly peaceful and tranquil.

HISTORICAL PLACES
At the entrance of the village you will see the ancient city. The boards giving information on the archaeological site and the plan city is good enough to brief you. Iasos or Iasos was a city in Caria located on the Gulf of Iasos (now called the Gulf of Güllük), opposite the modern town of Güllük. It was originally on an island, but is now connected to the mainland. It is located in the Milas district of Muğla Province, near the village of Kıyıkışlacık about 31 km from the center of Milas.

Historians credit Peloponnesians from Argos with founding Iasos in the 9th Century BC. It was latter inhabited by Ionians, then became a member of the Delian Confederacy. The Spartans sacked Iasos and turned it over to the Persians. King Mausolus controlled the city during his reign, and it prospered from its salted fish industry.

Türkbükü is a coastal town in Muğla Province in southwestern Turkey, located on the opposite side of the Bodrum peninsula from the town of Bodrum. Türkbükü has a well protected harbor ringed with high hills containing a number of luxury hotels and holiday villas. The town is a favorite vacation spot and second home residency of upper-class Turks and although less well visited by Western European tourists compared to Bodrum, also increasingly popular with foreign visitors.

The protected harbor is a refuge for yachts and allows for swimming in swimming pool like conditions in the morning before the afternoon breeze comes in. Midway along the peninsula's north shore, nestled in a huge bay are the two quaint villages of Türkbükü and Gölköy. Today's Göltürkbükü is the favorite summer holiday venue for many well-off and well-known Turks. Here is where the day and night colours of Göltürkbükü change, a place where enjoyable and unforgettable moments are experienced.

With their recent amalgamation into a single municipality the former villages of Türkbükü and Gölköy are now often referred to as Göltürkbükü. Located on the site of ancient Caryanda, the home Scylax, a pioneer navigator who explored the coast of the western Indian Ocean in the 6th century B.C.

To the south of Türkbükü Bay, there is a small fisherman's shelter. Next to the shelter is a small slip place and a boatyard. There are fish farms to both sides of the deep passage between the Big and Small Islands and the land to the north of the Türkbükü Bay. Floats of them emerge towards the middle, so be careful.

Göltürkbükü - Bodrum center 19 km, Milas - Bodrum International Airport 45 km.

HARBOUR

Capacity : 55 boats

Winds
The wide and big bay is surrounded by Gölköy on the south and Türkbükü on the west. Both of them are tourist locations of the peninsula. Gölköy shore receives meltem, an offshore summer breeze. But if you anchor below the cape on the west and threw howser to the shore, you will stay secluded. It is the port to the Southern weathers.

Anchor
This is a large bay between points of Kesire and Saplı Burun. The eastern part "Göltürkbükü" is open to breeze. This part is fair- wheather anchorage. Drop your anchor in 6 - 10 meters. The western side by the point affords better shelter with a line ashore.

There are two islets by the western side. The depths between these islets are deep. The shore side of the channel which ends by Küçük Ada is more convenient anchorage  with a line ashore. This part relatively quite and comfortable at night. The bottom is weed and deep. Make sure your anchor is well dug in.

In front of Türkbükü you can anchor between 12 - 18 m. The deep is mossy. About the center of the bay, a body of water leftover inundation of which the front is shallow reaches the sea. In front of the houses to the north of the bay the depth goes down to 5 - 6 m and the sea floor is sand. In front of the quays of some restaurants small boats can anchor at the stern.

LOCAL AREA
Citrus, fruits, especially satsuma are gowned in the environs. Besides these, olive, almond, and fruit gowned. It was famous for the production of wine and viniculture. The biggest property of Gölköy is its palm trees.

The mythological name of Gölköy is Carianda. Göltürkbükü Town, took place in the northern part of peninsula, in Bodrum. It is restricted by Aegean Sea (Mandalya Gulf) in the north an east, Gündoğan Town in its west and Torba in its south-east part. The eastern and southern parts of Gölköy is the only forest area of the peninsula. Other environs are occupied with bushes.

The Gölköy end of the large bay is quiet and restrained, while Türkbükü caters to the more flamboyant. The shore of the latter is lined with numerous restaurants, many with their own jetties which are used for sunbathing in daytime and with tables and chairs replacing sunbeds and towels, for dining at night. Watching the splendid full moon rise from behind the mountains across the bay is almost a religious rite here.

Further on, at the foot of the bay, the village of Gölköy occupies a verdant green valley fronted by a long sandy beach with small pensions and restaurants. The delights of Gölköy are many, but perhaps foremost among them is the ability, to enjoy the quiet native atmosphere of fishermen, farmers and tradesmen going about their daily tasks with little concern for the noise and hustle and bustle of modern life.

Safely tucked in the surrounding hillsides on the west side of the bay and sheltered by two islands the village of Türkbükü is a natural haven for area fishermen, who still operate from the many wooden jetties along the beachfront. Just outside the bay are popular fishing grounds for Dil (Sole).

The wide port, on the southern side of the Bay of Güllük, between the Cape Mesire and the Cape Saplı is the port of Türkbükü. Here, Badem Island and another small island at its south are situated. The region is considerably naked, it becomes steppe toward the northeast. Badem Island and the small island protect the anchoring place against the northeastern winds. Inside the port, two recessions that are encircled by beaches are located.

There is towering mountain peaks covered in pine forests, in the secluded village of Gündoğan. The old Greek name "Farilya" means "Sunrise" and is still visible on some signposts. Gündoğan is a fishermen’s place with its fully sandy beaches, clear sea and green environment. The fishermen’s shelter where the fishing boats and yachts anchor adds colour to the shore.

The larger bay of Gündoğan, with its long ribbon of sand divided by a harbour and jetties, perfect for sunbathing and swimming from and ideal for polishing that tan. Caressed by cooling breezes that brush the bay, Gündoğan is wonderful for windsurfing and sailing. Once an important fishing center, Gündoğan's major economies are now agriculture (primarily citrus fruit) and tourism.

The sunsets at Gündoğan are extremely pleasant. Those who want to spend the evening here go to fish restaurants by the waterside. There are restaurants and cafes to cater all tastes and pockets.

There are plenty of waterfront restaurants to choose. The cafes and tiny restaurants providing local food offer an authentic ambiance.

FISH RESTAURANTS
Try some fish restaurants, which is so popular in the summer, that the tables and chairs spill out onto the  street, which is closed to traffic, and onto the beach alongside. A few small but comfortable hotels dot the beach, and the intimate seaside restaurants proudly serve the fresh catches of Gündoğan's remaining fishermen.

FISH AND SEA PRODUCT SPECIES LIST OF THE AEGEAN SEA

NIGHTLIFE
While there are some bars dotted along the harbour front, nightlife in Gündoğan tends to be low-key with evenings spent savouring a good meal or sitting on one of the terraces with a gin and tonic in hand, watching the sun set on another day. If you fancy something livelier, more energetic, historic and cosmopolitan Bodrum is just a short dolmuş, taxi or car ride away.

SPECIAL SHOPPING
The northern section of the Bodrum Peninsula is well known for sponge-fishing, particularly around Yalıkavak. Pick up a soft sea sponge from one of the waterfront stalls. They are a fraction of the price you would pay at home. For a more extensive and comprehensive shopping experience try a trip to Bodrum or Turgutreis market on Saturday.

BEACHES
A seaside road occupies most of the available beachfront but the numerous jetties jutting from the shore provide plenty of comfortable and private spots for sunning and swimming. The village itself is small and calm with clean and enjoyable beaches. Hugging a long, curving sandy beach where the soft sands and sunbeds make for some genuinely comfortable lounging.

Alternatively, settle on the jetties that jut into the polished-glass waters, each a perfect, breeze cooled sunbathing and swimming platform.

HISTORICAL SITES
Gündoğan also offers some interesting historical sites. Across the bay is Küçük Tavşan (Little Rabbit) Island, where and 9th century AD  Byzantine monastic settlement is clearly visible atop the hill. A step climb up the ridge just outside the upper village leads to a flight of 50 steps cut into the rock and the entrance to a small but spectacularly sited monastery.

In addition, on the far side of the main Yalıkavak-Torba road, across from the upper village, an old Ottoman tower pokes its head from the lush pine forest.

Perhaps the most interesting is the extensive set of caverns encrusted with stalagmites and stalactites. One of the caves has been identified as an early human settlement replete with Bronze Age artefacts. The far side of the Yalıkavak road an old Ottoman tower pokes out above the lush pine canopy.

There are also some excellent coves and areas of the bay which are great for snorkelling.

For the adventurous there is a water sports company on the bay where you can hire equipment to jet-ski, water-ski, wind-sail and Hobie-cat sail at very reasonable prices. Even in the height of summer the beaches remain busy but not overcrowded. You can choose your own secluded and private spot on the beach or one of the small coves or there are a number of private beaches.
