Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

ÇÖKERTME COVE ANCHORAGE

Milas - Muğla - Turkey

GPS : 36°59'46.1"N 27°47'33.3"E / 36.996130, 27.79257

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

The Gulf of Gökova, which is the 50 mile deep inlet between the Bodrum peninsula to the north and the Datça peninsula to the south. Çökertme is a favorite layover port for the chartering boats. Çökertme also known as Fesiliyen Koyu or Vasilika. It’s an attractive spot, hemmed in by high precipitous slopes covered with pine trees and olive groves on the lower slopes. The small hamlet perches on the sand at the foot of the slopes and has a reputation for being a welcoming place to stop-over on a Çökertme yacht charter.

Çökertme is a wide cove located on the north side of the Gökova Gulf, between the Kepçe Cape and Karaburun. There is a small village of Çökertme by the shore. The shore is quite long. The region is a well protected area against the strong winds so that the yachts mostly prefer this region for mooring.

The bay takes its the name from village in the harbor. Çökertme is quite sheltered against winds from the west to the north and east. Çökertme is one of the most preferred bays in Gokova by yachtsmen. Its coast is very long, the shores of the island are covered with pines and olive trees.

Çökertme is subject to heritage conservation programme, to preserve its identity. Çökertme still carries some of the charm being fishing and carpet-weaving village. There are carpet and kilim stands in the village. A road goes in for about 3 km to Bozalan Village where you can see carpet-weaving examples and enjoy stupendous view of Çökertme and Gökova.

An excellent sail here today passing Bodrum and some very pretty coastline to Çökertme Koyu, a big inlet with three restaurant jetties. You are bound to find a good bunch of like-minded charterers with whom to shoot the breeze late into the night in one of the waterfront restaurants. There are restaurants with piers along the shore. These piers afford adequate shelter from southerlies. The bottom is weed.

Pine and olive trees surround the bay. the coves by the western end, intending to the north  afford sheltering from westerly and northerly blowing winds. You can be anchored in 10 - 15 meters and get aline ashore. The cove on the north is more shallow. Boats can be anchored off in 5 - 10 meters with a line ashore or pushed off if it is not packed.

It is an attractive cove but it is subject to strong gusts. Anchor in 2 - 5 m. The bottom is sand and weed and there could be a problem with holding, so take a line ashore. Alternatively, pick up a laid mooring on one of the three restaurant pontoons. With an onshore southerly it is best to anchor off in the western cove, as big incoming waves make the restaurant pontoons very uncomfortable.

There are several anchorages in the bay. Çökertme provides adequate anchorage from southerlies. Slipways of the village are located here. Reefs extend out from the islet in the middle and the depths on the west of this islet are shallow to the coast. A stream goes into sea.

Village Quay
GPS : 37°00'18.2"N 27°47'29.2"E / 37.005054, 27.791449
A finger tip extends in the middle towards west. A quay and the floating pier of the village here afford the most adequate sheltering. There are laid moorings tailed on pier which provide berthing up to 30 boats. Water and electricty are available. A fee is charged. All the piers in the village are administrated by the village authority.

Boats go stern to piers there laid moorings tailed on. The depths are sufficient at the head of the piers. There are several piers along to shore infront of the restaurants, you can also go stern-to on these piers. Boats also can be pushed off. The bottom is sand. Good holding. Boats can also go up to the shores of the entry of the bay and drop anchor behind shallow area in 10 - 20 m and take a line ashore. This part is quite and ideal for those loving serenity.

Mooring
The best place to anchor is in the western side of the cove with a line ashore to the west side or closer in with a line ashore to the beach.
There are a number of laid moorings which can be used if free.
The bottom is mud, sand and weed with poor holding in places.
In calm weather you can anchor off the hamlet though depths drop off quickly.

Çökertme beach side is on the eastern part where there are restaurants with piers. Staff will help you to tie up. There are laid moorings of restaurants tailed on piers. Southerlies send swell in.

Water and electricity are available. Fuel can be obtained. Limited provisions can be found.

BOZBÜK ANCHORAGE

Milas - Muğla - Turkey

GPS : 37°19'34.2"N 27°23'26.5"E / 37.326176, 27.390691

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Bozbük is a small town in between Bodrum and Altınkum. It is approximately 7 kilometeres from Akbük, which is popular for its beautiful sunset.

There are two parts to Bozbük, the town and the bay. The town of Bozbük is unspoilt Turkey, with farming and manual work being the prominent factor in the township. The bay of Bozbük starts just past Akbük, with a series of fish farms. These have been earmarked to be relocated to an island just off Altınkum in preparartion for the rush of toursim which is about to hit Bozbük.

Bozbük beach is very long. Bozbuk beach is a place that has gone straight to my heart. The strange aspect is that the beach is just part of a small village which is not really attractive at all.

It is a simple beach with just two local restaurants and a house.

Bozbük - Muğla 120 km, Milas 50 km.

Kıyıkışlacık, is a village in the district of Muğla Milas. Kıyıkışlacık village in Milas Gulluk Gulf coast, opposite the town of Güllük is a large village. Kıyıkışlacık Village lies at the innermost point of the Gulf of Güllük north of the Bodrum peninsula in southwest Turkey, and is 18 km east of Milas. Across the water on the opposite shore Güllük can be seen. In the further distance other villages along the coast of the Bodrum peninsula are visible. Kıyıkışlacık is astonishingly peaceful and tranquil.

HARBOUR

Kıyıkışlacık indents to the north. Care is needed while entering into the bay because of the remains of ancient breakwater in the fairway. A Byzantine tower on starboard at the entry is spotted. This tower is connected to the shore. Reef of ancient breakwater extends to the middle from the western part of the tower. The shallow is indicated by stick or a buoy, but it should not be relied on. The depth in the middle is about 8 meters. Keep this breakwater on your port side, keep 15 - 20 meters distance while entering. These remains may not be seen in harsh weather.

The village is located on the coast where a natural port is formed and a narrow breakwater has been built in the entrance. This bay provides all-round shelter. Northerly blowing winds are predominant. Reef of ancient breakwater protects the bay from southerlies swell. The bottom is muddy. Good holding. The depths shelve to the shore. You can drop your anchor and swing, but we suggest yachtmen to drop anchor in 4 meters and go stern or bows on quay on the west.

PENSIONS

WEEKLY MARKET
Kıyıkışlacık does not have its own weekly market. Instead local people go to the market on Tuesdays and Fridays at Milas, the ancient Mylasa. People from all over the area, from as far as Söke and Bodrum visit this colorful and busy market, which also attracts many tourists during the summer months. As well as fruit, vegetables and other foodstuffs, a wide range of fabrics and table cloths and curtains trimmed with hand made lace and crochet are to be found here.

On the return journey to Kıyıkışlacık via Ovakışlacık you pass by the Temple of Zeus on the right hand side of the Söke road. This temple lay in the ancient city of Euromos, a name meaning "powerful", which in ancient times was second in importance only to Mylasa. This splendid temple was built in the 2nd century AD.

RESTAURANTS
Several seafront restaurants available for fish and other foods.

FISH MARKET
Fishing is the second most important source of income for the village, and probably predates even olive cultivation. The fact that the Roman mausoleum is referred to as the Fish Market bears witness to the importance of fishing in later times, as does the fact that the bell tower was used to announce that fish had arrived in the market.

FISH RESTAURANTS
Fishing is the second most important source of income for the village, and probably predates even olive cultivation. The abundance of fresh and cheap fish in Kıyıkışlacık is one of its main attractions. Every day people come here by boat from the opposite shore just to buy fish, and a meal at one of the fish restaurants on the seashore here is delightful. The view across the harbour of olive groves and Iassos's ruins as the setting sun paints the ancient stones with golden light is the perfect accompaniment to the delicious freshly caught fish.

FISH AND SEA PRODUCT SPECIES LIST OF THE AEGEAN SEA

OLIVES
Finding fine olives here was no surprise, since the last part of our journey to Kıyıkışlacık had been through olive groves, which covered the hillsides right down to the sea. The Aegean shores of Anatolia are the original home of the olive tree, which can live for one or even two thousand years, so these are youngsters by comparison. As the sun sinks towards the horizon the shadows of the olive trees fall on the ancient walls, merging trees and city in an inextricable embrace. Today olive cultivation is the principal occupation. Most of the olives are grown for oil, which is processed locally. They are large, oval in shape, and dark greenish brown in colour.

OLIVE OILS
The virgin extra oil from the first pressing is known as pure "sızma", and is the finest quality of all. It was this that was poured on our olives for breakfast, lending them that exquisite flavour. The village stands on one of the best sheltered coves in the area, enclosed on one side by olive clad slopes, and on the other by the small peninsula - formerly an island - where the ancient site of Iassos stands.

LOCAL AREA
Kıyıkışlacık is astonishingly peaceful and tranquil. Kıyıkışlacık, where the village and the ancient city of Iasos are intertwined. The villagers still use the ancient paths as a shortcut and their goats feed on the grass and they tie up their donkeys in these places.

Across the water on the opposite shore Güllük can be seen. In the further distance other villages along the coast of the Bodrum peninsula are visible. While the peninsula is Turkey's most popular holiday area thronged with visitors in summer, Kıyıkışlacık is astonishingly peaceful and tranquil.

HISTORICAL PLACES
At the entrance of the village you will see the ancient city. The boards giving information on the archaeological site and the plan city is good enough to brief you. Iasos or Iasos was a city in Caria located on the Gulf of Iasos (now called the Gulf of Güllük), opposite the modern town of Güllük. It was originally on an island, but is now connected to the mainland. It is located in the Milas district of Muğla Province, near the village of Kıyıkışlacık about 31 km from the center of Milas.

Historians credit Peloponnesians from Argos with founding Iasos in the 9th Century BC. It was latter inhabited by Ionians, then became a member of the Delian Confederacy. The Spartans sacked Iasos and turned it over to the Persians. King Mausolus controlled the city during his reign, and it prospered from its salted fish industry.

FISH AND SEA PRODUCT SPECIES LIST OF THE AEGEAN SEA

HISTORICAL SITE
The ancient name of the town is Ceramus. Takes its name from the founder of the ceramics art and mythology, Ceramus is the son of Dionysos and Ariadne. The current Ören town is built on the ruins of Ancient town of Ceramus. Remarkable ruins of the ancient city are located in the residential districts. Scientific researches and archaeological excavations on the history of Ceramus continue. The new evidences enlightens the interesting history of Ören.

Ceramus means ceramics in Greek. In time, this change changes to Gereme. (In the 17th century, Evliya Çelebi defines Gereme as  "a prosperous, developed, village, full of vineyards and gardens."  The name of the town was once called as Kemerdere. Kemerdere name comes from the ancient water archways in Kocacay Valley. The current name of  the town, Ören, means ruins.

From the Greek archaic sculptures, we understand that, Ceramus did not stay out of the Hellenism age in the archaic ages, Helenism age may be started  7-6 BC . In the Hellenistic age, made direct or indirect relationships with overseas countries, for example Egypt and made its name heard in the Asia state in Romus era. Ceramus city, in 5 BC was paying 1.5 talant tax to the Attika-Delos sea union as its member. Then, the city was connected to Khrysaor union and gained an active position due to their plenty of  fields and villages.

In 188 BC, as a result of the Apamela truce, Kermaos was given to Rhodes with the whole Karya. In a scripture, it’s found that after this date Keramos made Sympoliteia agrrement with another city (probably Stretonikeia). But town was dissatisfied with this agreement  and asked for Rhodes’s help. The person who asked for this help was honored in the mentioned  scripture.

Between 167-133 BC, Keramos made a pact with Rhodes, and added to the Roman Asian State  with whole Kayra in 129 BC. When the city took sides with Mithridiates at war between Romans and  the Pontus King Mithridiates, after the Romans’ victory,  the city was punished by being left to  Stratonikeia. Historical artifacts and ruins prove the Roman  domination as they belong to to Karya and Roman era. Coin making has started in 2 BC and lasted  until the roman Empire era.

Ceramus was worshiping a young God which can be seen on the coins. Young god with a short skirt, hold a double axe and a shield. This local god was sometimes seen with the mighty god of the city Zeus Chrysaor.

The person named Polites who won all of the stadium, dialos and long distance runs on the same day was the most known Ceramusian beyond the borders of the city. According to Strabon, Ceramus is one of the small  cities that are not not independent in 1 BC In the Byzantium era, it became an episcopalism center.

Traces of the ancient city, which takes its name from Keramos, son of the Dionysos and Ariadne of Greek mythology and originator of the art of pottery, can be found all over the town. The extant remains of the city, which was a member of the Carian Khrysaoris league, date for the most part to the Roman period. Known as Gereme after Anatolia passed into the hands of the Turks, in time it was transformed into Ören owing to the ancient ruins at the site.

Kurşunluyapı, a temple with Ionian and Corinthian columns, a monumental gate that forms the wall of a house today, a basilica and defense walls can be regarded as the city’s most significant ruins. Among the oleanders near the lignite mines on the road to Muğla are what remains of the aqueducts that once carried water to the city. Proof that the ancient ruins are part and parcel of life today is the location of the necropolis right inside the local cemetery.
