PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM
It is the largest island in the Sea of Marmara that is the center of Marmara district in Balıkesir Province. Its peak is 720 m above sea level. Its south side is very wooded and green while its north side is very heavily quarried for marble. The marble not only gives the name of the island but to the whole gulf: Marmara Sea.
Marmara Adası harbour is the main harbour in Marmara Adasi and is situated on the SW corner of the island, protected from S and W by a long breakwater and from E by a stub breakwater and the headland beyond it. Depths in the entrance are around 6 - 7 metres and in the centre of the harbour between 4 - 5 metres.
The quay along the breakwater and on the western side of the harbour is usually filled with fishing and cargo boats and yachts are normally directed to anchor moor bows or stern-to on the northern quay, where there is space for around 6 - 8 yachts. Shelter here is good in the prevailing N/NE winds, although strong gusts off the mountains will be experienced in the harbour with winds above force 5-6.
HARBOUR
Port Marmara lies on the SW corner of the large, mountainous island of Marmara Adası. White marble is mined on the northern side of the island and is well-known for its purity. Unfortunately this does mean that the area surrounding the port is an open pit mine and not a pretty sight.
Port Marmara is the main harbour in Marmara Adası and is situated on the SW corner of the island, protected from S and W by a long breakwater and from E by a stub breakwater and the headland beyond it.
Winds
The marina offers good shelter from the winds. Shelter here is good in the prevailing N/NE winds, although strong gusts off the mountains will be experienced in the harbour with winds above force 5-6.
Important note : The depths at the quay range from 1.5 to 2.5 metres only (the deeper water being in the centre of the quay) and around 3 metres about 10 metres off the quay. Yachts with deep rudders and/or keels are likely to have problems if there is any swell in the harbour. Shelter inside is good, although strong N/NE winds send in some swell, which is more irritating than dangerous.
Moorings : 125 yachts
Main Breakwater : 305 m
Max. length : 18 meters

Approach and Navigation
While the approach to the islands is straightforward from all directions, the coasts of the islands themselves are fringed with isolated rocks and reefs and careful navigation is needed when sailing between the islands. There can also be strong gusts in the channels between the islands when the usual fresh N/NE winds are prevailing.
Docking
It is a very crowded harbour and yachts are usually directed to berth on the northern quay, where care must be taken to avoid the underwater rubble.
There is excellent shelter here. Anchoring is also possible in the bay, good holding and shelter from all winds except Northwest.

The azure waters of the Mediterranean, the Aegean, and the Black Sea, as well as the Sea of Marmara, surround There are marinas, yacht building boatyards, yachtsmen hotels, yacht clubs, yacht technical services. Turkey to the south, west and north. With over 8,333 km of coastline along the four seas, Turkey is a treasure chest of coves, inlets, bays and beaches at which yachtsmen can choose a different, private anchorage each night.
Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.
