Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

TURKEY PORT OF ENTRIES

Ensure that your first landfall in Turkey is made at an official Port of Entry. An official Transit Log (a strict requirement) is issued at the first port of entry and is valid for 1 year. When first arriving by boat in Turkey it is necessary to enter at one of the following ports and register with the Harbour Master, Health, Passport Police and Customs, presenting your crew list.

Formalities concerning the documentation of the yachts departing from the last port of call or entering port or mooring-place for winter lay-up shall be carried out at the port of departure or winter mooring place. Upon entry into Turkish Territorial Waters, the foreign yacht will be recorded in the yacht owners' or captains' passport by the customs authorities. This record should be cancelled by the customs authorities upon departure for foreign ports or when leaving the yachts for winter lay-up in Marinas.

In most Ports of Entry there are agents, usually operating within a marina, who, for an extra fee, will undertake to do all the clearance legwork for either entering or exiting Turkey. Since often the various offices (Health, Harbourmaster, Passport Police and Custom) are scattered around the town, this extra expense is worth the convenience. You just hand your papers and passports to the agent and after a few hours he brings them back dully stamped. In the mean time, you and your crew are free to come and go.

Entry Ports
All foreign flag private yachts entering in pr departing from Turkish territorial waters shall follow the same procedure through Turkish border ports of entries which are;

The main anchorage on the Paşalimanı Adası lies on the W side, between it and the smaller, uninhabited island of Koyun Adası. The anchorage is either approached from the N, when care should be taken to avoid the numerous offshore islets and reefs along the coast of the island, or from the W, when a yacht should pass just S of the isolated danger mark at the S end of Koyun Adası, since there are dangerous reefs extending nearly half a mile NE of the headland of Incirli Burnu at the SW end of the anchorage.

Once inside, anchor offshore in 5 - 10 metres where convenient. The holding is good in sand and weed – once your anchor is through the weed, which may call for several attempts. A simple restaurant is ashore and a small bakery. The locals in the village are very friendly and the island’s former importance as a wine-producing area is evinced by the ruins of a winery established here by the Compagnie Vinicole de Constantinople.

MARINA

Approach and Navigation
The approach from N is straightforward, but in the approach from S be sure to give the headland of Büyükliman Burnu a clearance of at least half a mile as there are dangerous shallows off it. Türkeli is a new harbour, constructed on the E side of the island of Avşa, primarily as an alternative berth for the ferry from Erdek on the rare occasions when there are strong W/SW winds in the Sea of Marmara and the ferry’s usual jetty at Turkeli on the W side of the island becomes untenable.

The harbour is entered from SSE, parallel with the beach, and there are depths of 6 m in the entrance. The harbour is very large and a visiting yacht has several berthing options (assuming the ferry is not due in the case of strong W/SW winds). The small basin at the W side of the harbour is shallow and mostly filled with local boats. The larger basin on the E side is used by the ferry.

The central length of quay between the two basins and directly opposite the entrance has depths of 4 - 5 m off the quay but barely 2 m alongside, so a yacht should do an anchor moor if mooring here. The holding is good in sand. In the eastern basin, the W and much of the N side is taken up by apparently dumped fishing boats and two large ferries. The West wall has 4 water and electric stands, the depths immediately in front of which range from 2.3 meters in the SW to 2.5 meters in the NW and quickly get deeper.

Going stern to should be fine. When the ferry comes in it turns to starboard and spins in its own length with bow thrusters and so should not present a problem to yachts stern to the west wall.

However, the E side of the basin, where the ferry berths, has depths of 5 m and a yacht can lay alongside here in good shelter. Although the quay here is quite high and lined with heavy black tyres, a yacht alongside is blown off by the prevailing winds.

Note: the approach from N is straightforward, but in the approach from S be sure to give the headland of Buyukliman Burnu a clearance of at least half a mile as there are dangerous shallows off it.

Avşa Adası in the south of Sea of Marmara. The island belongs to Marmara district of Balıkesir Province in northwestern Turkey. Port Marmara lies on the SW corner of the large, mountainous island of Marmara Adasıı. White marble is mined on the northern side of the island and is well-known for its purity. Unfortunately this does mean that the area surrounding the port is an open pit mine and not a pretty sight.

Avşa is a holiday village of island that boasts of spectacular beaches and clear water as well as famous vineyards and wine cellars. Avsa Island is with its' clean air with much oxygen, brilliant water, granite sand, delicious fish, wine, music and joy full nights, the most beautiful among the islands of the Marmara Sea.

MARINA

The basic infrastructure of a new marina has been installed on the headland of Ekinlik Burnu opposite the small island of Ekinlik off the NW corner of Avşa Island. The marina currently consists of little more than two breakwaters and quays, with no shore facilities at present, but yachts are reportedly allowed to moor there alongside for short periods.

In the approach, the two ends of the breakwaters are indicated by conspicuous light towers. There are gusts in the channel between Avsa and Ekincik with moderate to strong NE winds.

Docking
It is a very crowded harbour and yachts are usually directed to berth on the northern quay, where care must be taken to avoid the underwater rubble. There is excellent shelter here. Anchoring is also possible in the bay, good holding and shelter from all winds except Northwest.

AVŞA TOWN ANCHORAGE

Avşa, Marmara - Balıkesir - Turkey

GPS : 40°30'33.1"N 27°29'40.9"E / 40.509209, 27.494681

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Avşa Adası or Türkeli is a Turkish island in the southern Sea of Marmara. It was the classical and Byzantine Aphousia and was a place of exile during the Byzantine period. The island belongs to the Marmara District of Balıkesir Province in northwestern Turkey. It is a popular domestic tourist destination, especially for tourists from Istanbul.

Roughly in the shape of an hourglass, the island has two settlements: the main town, also known as Avşa, centred on the western cove and the smaller village of Araplar, officially Yiğitler, occupying the eastern cove. The island has a large range of hills running down the middle, some beautiful bays for bathing, swimming or just relaxing in and gets very hot in the summer.

Buses leave from Avşa's main square in town and travel around the island, there are also a couple of dolmuş operators, kind of a cross between a taxi and a minibus. These follow particular routes around the island. It is possible to walk around the island but it's a good stretch of the legs and not for the unfit. If you do walk, make sure you take water with you - some parts of the island are very rural and you won't see another person for miles or hours.

In Avşa there's a "Lunapark" fair. There's also sandy beaches all around the island, some public, some private. There are a few real gems with some natural bays due to the island's shape. It's possible to walk over the main hills fairly easily, but make sure you take plenty of water if you do and either set off very early in the morning, or in the mid-afternoon.

The main strip in town might look at little tacky, but if you go up to the ferry port, nearby there's a pair of fish market stalls. The guys there are more than happy to show you how they handle the fish, the fish are fresh and great cooked in a Turkish barbeque (mangal).

Heading down the strip and out you'll come to a place called Mavikoy. Before heading up the hill there's a restaurant with a sea view, some nice beaches and past the hill is a lookout point sometimes frequented by couples around sunrise/sunset.

Island’s local wine is well known and of variable quality. If you don't like wine, there's a reasonable selection of beers in the various restaurants and bars in Avsa, but you might be better off visiting the local supermarkets. It goes without saying that Turkish spirits such as Raki are freely available.

There are lots of guesthouses (pansiyon) on the island, so finding somewhere to sleep shouldn’t be a problem.

Ekinlik is a small island in Marmara Sea and has a village named Ekinlik. The islanders still make their living by fishing. Since island is small and doesn't have many beaches, there are no touristic facilities. If you say comfort isn't the main issue for you and you look for a peaceful place in nature with fresh air and unpolluted sea, you must visit the island.

Although there aren't any hotels in the island, there are couple of rooming houses. In addition, there are a small market, a couple of cafes and a bakery. The islanders do their shopping in Avsa and Erdek. During summer time, boats selling vegetables and fruit visit the island.

Asmaliköy is a small harbour on the E side of Marmara Adası. Asmaliköy is very attractive, totally untouched by the outside world despite its relative proximity to Istanbul. It has a few houses, some very attractive made of wood.

Go stern-to the concrete wharf in the centre of the quay, where there are depths of 3.5 - 4 metres. Alternatively, go bows-to the breakwater itself, but note that it gets shallow very quickly. It is best to proceed very carefully and keep a good distance between your boat and the quay. It may even be wiser to take a line ashore in the dinghy.

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

It is the largest island in the Sea of Marmara that is the center of Marmara district in Balıkesir Province. Its peak is 720 m above sea level. Its south side is very wooded and green while its north side is very heavily quarried for marble. The marble not only gives the name of the island but to the whole gulf: Marmara Sea.

Marmara Adası harbour is the main harbour in Marmara Adasi and is situated on the SW corner of the island, protected from S and W by a long breakwater and from E by a stub breakwater and the headland beyond it. Depths in the entrance are around 6 - 7 metres and in the centre of the harbour between 4 - 5 metres.

The quay along the breakwater and on the western side of the harbour is usually filled with fishing and cargo boats and yachts are normally directed to anchor moor bows or stern-to on the northern quay, where there is space for around 6 - 8 yachts. Shelter here is good in the prevailing N/NE winds, although strong gusts off the mountains will be experienced in the harbour with winds above force 5-6.

HARBOUR
Port Marmara lies on the SW corner of the large, mountainous island of Marmara Adası. White marble is mined on the northern side of the island and is well-known for its purity. Unfortunately this does mean that the area surrounding the port is an open pit mine and not a pretty sight.

Port Marmara is the main harbour in Marmara Adası and is situated on the SW corner of the island, protected from S and W by a long breakwater and from E by a stub breakwater and the headland beyond it.

Winds
The marina offers good shelter from the winds. Shelter here is good in the prevailing N/NE winds, although strong gusts off the mountains will be experienced in the harbour with winds above force 5-6.

Important note : The depths at the quay range from 1.5 to 2.5 metres only (the deeper water being in the centre of the quay) and around 3 metres about 10 metres off the quay. Yachts with deep rudders and/or keels are likely to have problems if there is any swell in the harbour. Shelter inside is good, although strong N/NE winds send in some swell, which is more irritating than dangerous.

Moorings : 125 yachts

Main Breakwater : 305 m

Max. length : 18 meters

Approach and Navigation
While the approach to the islands is straightforward from all directions, the coasts of the islands themselves are fringed with isolated rocks and reefs and careful navigation is needed when sailing between the islands. There can also be strong gusts in the channels between the islands when the usual fresh N/NE winds are prevailing.

Docking
It is a very crowded harbour and yachts are usually directed to berth on the northern quay, where care must be taken to avoid the underwater rubble.
There is excellent shelter here. Anchoring is also possible in the bay, good holding and shelter from all winds except Northwest.
