Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Karabiga is a town in Biga District, Çanakkale Province, in the Marmara region of Turkey. It is located at the mouth of the Biga River, on a small east-facing bay, known as Karabiga Bay.
Karabiga Harbour is located in the Western corner of the Gulf of Erdek, on the Southern shore of the Sea of Marmara - basically opposite Marmara Adası, and is a fishing harbour able to accommodate small coasters.

The commercial harbour of Karabiga lies at the western end of the gulf of Erdek in the Sea of Marmara in Turkey. In addition to a busy fishing fleet, the harbour is also used by bulk tankers loading coal and aggregates from its long quays and a regular ferry service. Karabiga makes no concessions to yachts at all, and visitors here need to fit in where they can amongst the coastal freighters, fishing boats and ferries. However, it is a useful port of call for an overnight stop en route from the Dardanelles eastwards along the Sea of Marmara.

Karabiga is a settlement with many summer houses based around a fairly wide cove. Strabo mentions that the area produced fine wine and that the God Priapus gave the town its ancient name. Thucydides mentions the town as a naval station. In 334 BC, the town surrendered to Alexander the Great without contest, prior to the Battle of Granicus. Under the Eastern Roman Empire, the town was known as Pegae and was the site of a Byzantine fortress.

FISH HARBOUR

Approach and Navigation
The headland of Kale Burun two miles NE of Karabiga is easily identified from the row of ruined mediaeval towers along the neck of the peninsula. The headland should be given a clearance of at least half a mile in the approach from W and N as there are dangerous reefs off it.

Once round the headland, the long breakwater of Karabiga harbour will be clearly seen. Two white towers with port and starboard lights on them identify the entrance. The harbour is entered from ESE. Depths in the entrance are 6 - 7 metres and at the quays from 3 to 5 metres.

Berthing Options
Yachts normally moor stern-to the outside of the quay of the fishing harbour, directly opposite the entrance, although it is lined with heavy black tyres and the mooring rings are difficult to locate (especially since the fishermen pile their nets on top of them).

Shelter here is, however, only moderate and an unpleasant swell rolls in with even moderate E or NE winds. Better shelter can be found alongside the commercial quay at the northern end of the harbour, but you must be prepared to move off at short notice if a ship is due to berth there.

Docking
Berth alongside, or stern-to at the south end of the coal loading quay. The inner (fishing) basin is usually too crowded. It is also fairly shallow. The harbour gives good protection from the prevailing winds, which usually do not blow very strongly here.

Anchorages
It is just about possible to anchor in 5 - 6 metres under the harbour breakwater, clear of the 2-3 small mooring buoys there, but the position feels very exposed and may obstruct big ship movements. A better option is in the cove a mile NE of the harbour, in the small bay under the mediaeval ruins, where shelter is good from the prevailing N/NE winds.

Another option is to anchor in the NE corner of the harbour and where the breakwater provides shelter from the prevailing wind. This might be a better option if coal is being loaded at the quay. It is also possible to anchor in the bay, NE of the harbour, where there is good holding in mud and sand.

HISTORICAL PLACES
After passing  the summer houses around the cove the remains of the ancient city of Priapos with its inspiring high walls can be found situated on a headland. These grand walls, some of which are still in a good condition, stretch as far as the other end of the headland. This was a colony built by the peoples of Abydos and Miletos. The Battle of Granicos, the first in a series of clashes against the Persians in Alexander the Great’s eastern expedition, was fought here is 334 BC. This region came under Ottoman rule in 1364. The walls of the city are in the Byzantine style for which the city should be studied for its defence and wall building techniques.

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Gelibolu, also known as Gallipoli "beautiful city"), is the name of a town and a district in Çanakkale Province of the Marmara region, located in Eastern Thrace in the European part of Turkey on the southern shore of the peninsula named after it on the Dardanelles strait, 2 miles away from Lapseki on the other shore. The port of Gelibolu lies on the N shore of the Dardanelles, 3 miles W of the entrance to the Sea of Marmara.  Gelibolu is well known for sardine canning.

HARBOUR
It is inland shelter. Water area is 850 m2.

Anchorages
There are two possible berthing areas for yachts. The eastern corner of the commercial harbour is one, and just inside the fishing harbour is the other. In each case care should be taken with the depths. There is good shelter from the wind in both harbours. It is also possible to anchor to the east of the harbour. There is good holding in the sand and shelter from the prevailing wind.

The northern side of the commercial harbour has now been dredged but there are no mooring facilities on the quay. The fishing harbour has also been dredged and it is possible to berth bows-to in front of the restaurant. This is a busy harbour and care needs to be taken to avoid the many ferries and fishing boats.

It is possible in settled weather to anchor close inshore just W of the harbour. However, this should only be attempted in settled weather as it is a very uncomfortable spot in even moderate winds.

Gelibolu Port
Gelibolu, which used to be a useful port of call for yachts transiting the straits, is now closed to yachts since the opening of the harbour of Lapseki on the southern shore directly opposite.
Yachts are forbidden to moor at Gelibolu harbour.

Inner Breakwater : 250 m

The new harbour of Lapseki lies on the S shore of the Dardanelles, directly opposite the harbour of Gelibolu three miles W of the entrance to the Sea of Marmara. The harbour is a purpose-built fishing and small craft harbour enclosed by two breakwaters.

Since its completion, the harbour of Gelibolu has been closed to yachts, which are now expected to moor in Lapseki. However, note that Lapseki is shallow and has minimum depths in the entrance of barely 3.0 metres.

Approach and Navigation
The new harbour lies half a mile N of the ferry terminal of Lapseki, which is easily identifiable from the numerous ferries plying the route across to Gelibolu on the N side of the straits. The harbour entrance is marked by two white light structures at the ends of the breakwaters and is entered from NNW along the line of a long sandy beach. The channel leading into the harbour is subject to silting and had least depths 3 m with one patch of just 2.6 m. Once inside, the bottom is uneven and depths range from 3 - 4 m in the western part (the eastern part is shallow).

Berthing Options
There is a quay at the E end of the harbour, but this is invariably filled with local fishing boats, often rafted two or three deep. A yacht is best to anchor off in the middle of the harbour, where depths are around 3 - 3.5 m and holding good in sand and weed.

HISTORY
The town was founded by Greek colonists from Phocaea in the 6th century BC. Soon afterwards it became a main competitor of Miletus, controlling the trade roots in the Dardanelles. Lapseki was founded about 500 BC, one of 4 settlements along the Dardanelles at that time. In ancient times, while the city was under the rule of King Mendrom and named Pityausa, the king, who defended the colonists from Foça from the attacks of the local people, minted coins for the first time in its history in the name of his daughter Lapseke and later the city was given this name by the colonists to express their indebtedness to him. In this way, the name Lampsakos, then Lapseki, was passed down to the present day.

The city was under the Byzantines for a long period then passed into Ottoman hands after its conquest by Süleyman Pasha in 1356. Occupied at the end of World War I, the town was freed from the British and French forces on 25 September 1922 as a result of the unity and solidarity of the people of Lapseki, toward the end of the War of Independence. In the district are the graves of 15,000 soldiers who lost their lives during the War of Independence.

Eceabat is a town on Gallipoli Peninsula in Eastern Thrace, northwestern Turkey. The town is located just opposite Çanakkale, the main city of the area, across the Straits of Dardanelles. Eceabat, formerly Maydos is a town and district of Çanakkale Province in the Marmara region, located on the eastern shore of the Gelibolu Peninsula, on the Dardanelles Strait.

On the northern banks of the Straits of Dardanelles, Eceabat is the nearest main town to WW1 battlefields and memorials of Gallipoli Peninsula and serves as the hub to visit there. It also offers some accommodation options for those preferring a quieter and nearer alternative than Çanakkale.

Eceabat lies on the main Çanakkale - Istanbul highway between Istanbul and Keşan, lying around 190 km away from Istanbul. Since all buses operating between Istanbul and Çanakkale cross the Straits via Eceabat, it's possible to get on one in Istanbul and get off at Eceabat, most likely at the waterfront where they queue for the ferry.

HISTORICAL SITES

On the northern banks of the Straits of Dardanelles, Eceabat is the nearest main town to WWI battlefields and memorials of Gallipoli Peninsula and serves as the hub to visit there. It also offers some accommodation options for those prefering a quieter and nearer alternative than Çanakkale.

Eceabat is the nearest town to World War I Gallipoli Campaign battlefields of 1915, cemeteries and memorials to the more than 120,000 soldiers fallen from Turkey, the United Kingdom, France, Australia and New Zealand. The name Eceabat could be originated from the Arabic military word "Hijabat" which means the most forward command point from the battlefield; this could also explain the change from the original name Madytos.

Perhaps why you are at Eceabat in the first place is to visit battlefields and war memorials of Gallipoli. From Eceabat, taking either direction - west or east - will deliver you to the national park, however the route via west, although more scenic as it lies along the Dardanelles, is very winding and full of potholes quite a bit, so it will take a bit longer. The nearby village of Kilitbahir to west (which also has ferry links with Çanakkale) is full of pleasant traditional stone architecture and its impressive citadel dating back to 15th century is well worth a visit.

THE BATTLE OF GALLIPOLI
It was the site of V Beach, the landing zone for two Irish battalions, including one from the SS River Clyde, on 25 April 1915 during the Battle of Gallipoli. At the tip of the Seddülbahir promontory is the castle, Seddülbahir Kale, also known as Eski Kale "Old Castle" which was built in 1659. The British designated the castle "Fort No. 3" (at the other end of V Beach was "Fort No. 1", also known as Fort Ertuğrul) and it was equipped with 10 artillery pieces, including two 28 cm Krupp L/22 guns. The castle was bombarded by the Royal Navy on 3 November 1914 causing serious damage and killing 86 Turkish soldiers.

The British attacked the Turkish forts on 19 February 1915 at the start of the naval operations in the Dardanelles Campaign. Seddülbahir was subjected to repeated bombardment and raids by naval demolition teams and the position was deemed too exposed. By the peak of naval operations on 18 March, Seddülbahir and Kum Kale, across the straits, had been eliminated as threats.

The Gallipoli campaign took place at Gallipoli peninsula in Turkey from 25 April 1915 to 9 January 1916, during the First World War. A joint British and French operation was mounted to capture the Ottoman capital of Istanbul, and secure a sea route to Russia. The attempt failed, with heavy casualties on both sides.

In Turkey, the campaign is known as the Çanakkale Savaşları (Çanakkale Wars), after the province of Çanakkale. In the United Kingdom, it is called the Dardanelles Campaign or Gallipoli. In France it is called Les Dardanelles. In Australia, New Zealand and Newfoundland, it is known as the Gallipoli Campaign or simply as Gallipoli. It is also known as the Battle of Gallipoli.

The Gallipoli campaign resonated profoundly among all nations involved. In Turkey, the battle is perceived as a defining moment in the history of the Turkish people-a final surge in the defence of the motherland as the centuries-old Ottoman Empire was crumbling. The struggle laid the grounds for the Turkish War of Independence and the foundation of the Turkish Republic eight years later under Atatürk, himself a commander at Gallipoli.

The campaign was the first major battle undertaken by the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC), and is often considered to mark the birth of national consciousness in both of these countries. As Anzac Day, the 25th April remains the most significant commemoration of military casualties and veterans in Australia and New Zealand, surpassing Armistice Day/Remembrance Day.

THE ÇANAKKALE MARTYRS' MEMORIAL
The Çanakkale Martyrs' Memorial is a war memorial commemorating the service of about 253,000 Turkish soldiers who participated at the Battle of Gallipoli, which took place from April 1915 to December 1915 during the First World War. It is located within the Gallipoli Peninsula Historical National Park on Hisarlık Hill in Morto Bay at the southern end of the Gallipoli peninsula in Çanakkale Province, Turkey.

For the erection of a memorial in Gallipoli, an architectural contest was opened in 1944. Construction of the monument was decided in 1952, and the ground stone was laid on 19 April 1954. The main structure was completed on 15 March 1958 and the memorial was officially opened on 21 August 1960.

The 41.70 m (137 ft) high monument is in the form of four square columns 7.5 m (25 ft) wide with 10 m (33 ft) space between each other, topped by a concrete slab of 25 by 25 m (82 by 82 ft). The huge structure is well visible during passage through the Dardanelles. The museum underneath the monument was opened later and the bas-reliefs on the columns were completed afterwards. Situated to the north of the memorial, a war cemetery holding the remains of 600 Turkish soldiers was established in 1992.

Posted at the site, an inscription with a poem by Mehmet Akif Ersoy (1873-1936), who also wrote the words of the Turkish national anthem, reminds the visitors:

Do not ignore the ground on which you have walked,
It is not ordinary soil.
Reflect on the thousands of people, who lie beneath
Without a shroud.
You are the son of a martyr
Do not hurt your ancestor,
Do not give away this beautiful motherland,
Even if you have the whole world.

THE WAR MUSEUM
Inside the museum, beneath the memorial, further information and historical artifacts illustrate the magnitude of the Battle of Gallipoli, against the Allied powers: British, French, and Australian and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZAC). Original personal and military items, such as cutlery, a set of false teeth, dress buttons, belt buckles, sniper shields, and photographs found on the battlefield, are on display in the museum.

THE 57TH REGIMENT MEMORIAL
A monument commemorating the soldiers and officers of the famous 57th Regiment of the 19th Division, who all were killed in action, was opened in 1992. It is a three-story tower with a relief inscription of Staff Lieutenant-Colonel Mustafa Kemal's famous command to his soldiers who ran out of ammunition and had nothing left but bayonets, on the morning of 25 April 1915 to meet the ANZACs on the slopes leading up from the beach to the heights of Conkbayırı : " I do not order you to attack, I order you to die. " As a sign of respect, there is no 57th Regiment in the modern Turkish army.

Kilitbahir Castle (Turkish: Kilitbahir Kalesi) is a fortress on the west side of the Dardanelles, opposite the city of Çanakkale, where there is a corresponding fortress (Kale-i Sultaniye), from which Çanakkale takes its name. The two castles were constructed by Fatih Sultan Mehmet in 1463 to control the straits at their narrowest point. Kilitbahir's name, meaning "lock of the sea", reflects this defensive purpose.

KİLİTBAHİR CASTLE
Kilitbahir Castle is located on the European side of the Dardanelles in the Kilitbahir village. The castle was built by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmet the Conqueror in 1462 with the purpose of controlling both the Dardanelles and Bosphorus to provide security for the newly- conquered İstanbul. Later, the castle of Kilitbahir, which means Locked Sea, was enlarged according to defensive requirements and reinforced with towers and bastions. It was restored by Süleyman the magnificent, has a trefoil- shaped citadel in the centre and a tower with seven storeys inside that.

The castle is surrounded by external walls and three bastions called Sarıkule, Mecidiye and Namazgah, which were added later. The three-leafed clover-like Kilitbahir architecture is very different from the usual Ottoman fortress. The Fatih Sultan Mehmet's wonder of geometry is believed to be associated with this kind of architecture.

Çanakkale is a province of Turkey, located in the northwestern part of the country. It takes its name from the town of Çanakkale. Like Istanbul, Çanakkale province has a European (Thrace) and an Asian (Anatolia) part. The European part is formed by the Gallipoli (Gelibolu) peninsula, while the Asian part is largely coterminous with the historic region of Troy in Anatolia. They are separated by the Dardanelles strait, connecting the Sea of Marmara and the Aegean Sea.

Çanakkale is a town and seaport in Çanakkale Province, on the southern (Asian) coast of the Dardanelles at their narrowest point. The city is the nearest major town to the site of ancient Troy. The "wooden horse" from the 2004 movie Troy is exhibited on the seafront. Çanakkale is the second city to be situated on two continents after Istanbul.
