Özdere is a town in the Menderes district of İzmir Province on the Aegean coast. It is a quiet holiday resort. Özdere is a small fishing village located in the southwestern coast of Turkey along the Aegean Sea. The main livelihood source of the village are agriculture, husbandry and fishing. World famous “Satsuma Mandarin” grows in Özdere.

Özdere is a cute borough with a 22 kilometer shoreline, magnificent bays, golden beaches and greener than green nature. The town, which is established on a 7000 year old history, still carried the traces of Hittite and Ionian culture. The region, which was called Kasura by the Hittites, Dioshierron by the Ionians and Kesre by the Ottoman, has been known as Özdere since the 1960’s.

Özdere has a very busy main street in the summer period, with many small shops that has everything you need in the daily and a huge street market every Saturday. There are water sports - paragliding - jeep safari - boat trips - hunting for wild boar, etc. One of the most popular places in Özdere is "The Love Square" located in the southern part of town. From here there are views over the sea to Samos, the Greek island. It’s a great place to get a good overview of most of the city, with approx. 2 km. long, newly built, water front in the foreground.

There are some top attractions within daytripping distance of Özdere - the world-famous ruins at Ephesus are around half an hour’s drive away, as is the Aqua Fantasy water park. And boat trips zip across the Aegean daily to the Greek island of Samos.

ÖZDERE BEACH
Days in Özdere tend to revolve around the beach. It’s a great spot for families, with a sweep of spade-friendly sand, plus calm, shallow waters perfect for splashing about in. Adults aren’t left out either - there are watersports on offer, as well as boat trips that leave from the little harbour.

There are beautiful golden sands on the beaches of Özdere, which run for miles along shallow and crystal-clear waters that are knee-deep only. AHMETBEYLİ COVE ANCHORAGE

About 5 Nm NW of Kuşadası, this is a short beach with a bar and campground ashore. It seems to be a popular holiday destination, full of swimmers in the daytime, and loud music at night.

Nevertheless, it does provide shelter from the Northerly meltemi, and the waves from the west. Open to the south. Approach as close to the shore as you can. The weed bottom will give way to sand at about 5 m depth. The sand, however, is hard and may take several attempts to get your anchor to penetrate.

CLAROS
The Sanctuary of Claros is within the borders of city of Izmir, borough of Menderes, district of Ahmetbeyli, is situated in the south of Cumaovası (Menderes) and on the Ahmetbeyli Valley (Ales) which is connecting the valley to Kuşadası Bay in the south. It is 13 km to Colophon (Colophon Archaia, Colophon ‘Degirmendere’ in the north), and 1600 m to Notion in the south (Colophon by the seaside, Colophon Nova or Colophon ‘Sahil Evleri’ in the south).

Mountain Gallesion (Barbandondağ, Mountain Kale Boğazı) is in the east side of the sanctuary. Famous geographer Strabo defines this mountain and the localisation of the Sanctuary of Claros, as “then you come across Mountain Gallesion and Colophon an Ionian city and the Sanctuary of Apollo Clarios which was once a prophecy centre”. By the saying of Strabo, the Mountain Korakion (Cemetery Mountain - it was named like this because the Necropolis was there) in the west of the sanctuary was to be reached after Colophon.

Ales (Creek of Ahmetbeyli) which runs along the west side of the sanctuary curves at a distance of 500 m to the District of Ahmetbeyli and reaches to the sea curving to the south. Pausanias names Ales as “Ales in Colophon” and defines it the coldest river in Ionia. He tells that the cold water of Ales is in the poems of elegiac poets. Again Pausanias says that “There is a grove of ash tree of god Apollo near Ales in the land of Colophon (Colophon at the Sea Side)”.

There are no ash trees in Claros today. It is clear that there was such grove in the period of Pausanias. The current vegetation cover of the valley of Ahmetbeyli is maquis and pine cover on upper parts. There were tobacco fields around the Sacred site between the years of 1950 and 1970, now citrus and mandarin tree groves have taken place of it.

The sanctuary is 1600 m north of the shore is located in front of alluvial cone of the creeks of Ahmetbeyli, Beynamaz and Kırmızıkayalar in the eastern side of the valley. For this reason, the sanctuary has been totally covered by the alluvial deposits from the creeks of Ahmetbeyli and Kırmızıkayalar after it was abandoned in the 4th century A.D. The Byzantine Period which is the latest phase of cultural layer of the sanctuary is underneath 4.5 m thick alluvial crust today.

NOTION COVE ANCHORAGE

The ruins of the city are now found east of the modern town Ahmetbeyli in the Menderes district of Izmir Province, Turkey.

All that is now visible of this little excavated ancient acropolis, located in a romantic setting in the shade of pine trees and surrounded by wild flowers and copses of trees, are the fragments of ramparts and the levelled ruins of a temple dedicated to Athena. The ruins of Claros can also be visited nearby. In the evening, when the sun is setting, the small theatre (2C AD) creates an enchanting scene, from where the views are equally delightful.

The site of ancient Notion or Notion-by-the-sea is located south of Izmir, 30 km from the town of Değirmendere. Notion served os a port to the Ionian city of Kolophon, and is situated just a few kilometers south of one of the most important religious centers in antiquity, the site of Klaros. Ancient Notion was built on a hill above the sea, and ployed an important role as a naval and commercial center.

RUINS OF NOTION
Notion occupied an area of 500 x I,000 metres on two flat-topped hills which rose up on the coast and were separated from each other by a narrow neck of land. The town was about 2 km distant from the Klaros temple. A French archaeological expedition worked here under Charles Picard in 1921. The 4 km- long city wall was erected in the Hellenistic age. It was built of regular square blocks and fortified with square towers; Roman mortar repair work can be observed on some of the faces.

Two gates to the city are still visible : one on the west, the other on the north. Other gates must have existed, however. There was also an entrance with steps at the south-eastern end. The ruins themselves are poorly preserved, but there is a magnificent view from the top of the acropolis to Samos in the south, Kuşadası in the south-east and to Ephesus. A temple encircled with colonnades is to be found on the western hill.

Only the foundation of this templum in antis of the Corinthian order is still standing; the measurements of temple were 7,50 x 16 m the krepidoma ( the platform ) was three-stepped. The frieze was adorned with garlands made from sprays of bay leaves which supported the heads of bulls. The temple was consecrated to Athena Polias and dates from the time of Hadrian. To the east of the temple can be seen the remains of the foundations of an altar measuring 5.30 x 7.72 m the temple and the altar were surrounded on all four sides by stoas of the Doric order. The exterior measurements of the temenos, including the stoas, were 17.10 x 38.1 5 m.

Shops were arranged along the outer faces of the stoas on the east, west and south. The non-axial arrangement of the stoas, the temple and the temenos is reminiscent of the plan of the Athena temenos at Pergamon. This arrangement, which was contrary to that customary in Roman art, perhaps arose from the fact that the citizens of Notion in the Roman period wished to conform to the traditional style in which the aforementioned buildings of the Hellenistic period were constructed.

The remains of a small temple are to be found to the north-east of the sanctuary of Athena, but it is not known to which god the temple was dedicated. There were originally two agars on the acropolis: one centrally placed the other to the east; however, neither of these has yielded any well-preserved remains. Close by the east side of the agora, which lies in the middle of the acropolis, are the ruins of a bouleuterion.

The city theatre occupied an area in the north-east sector of the acropolis, to the north-west of the eastern agora. This small westward-facing theatre, which was erected in Hellenistic times, underwent extensive structural alterations in the Roman era. Although the horseshoe shape was retained, the theatron was rebuilt with an arched diazoma which conformed to the Roman constructional style.

KLAROS (DENİZPINARI) COVE ANCHORAGE

Denizpınarı (Klaros) is located on 80-hectare area of a wonderful bay on the coast of Ahmetbeyli - Gümüldür. Denizpınarı Resting Area, which is 70 km away from Izmir, 40 km from Menderes and 25 km from Kuşadası, is open for trips with a wonderful sea sight. Its deep cove, after 5 m sea water going to deep.

KLAROS ANTIC CITY
Klaros Antic City is also located in this area. Near the temple were found the remains of a "hecatomb" where animals were tied up ready for slaughter. Signs at the site suggest that there will probably be work to improve the presentation shortly. For the time being there is a small open-air "museum" of replicas of items found here. This is a lovely, peaceful site in a quiet location.

Claros was the site of a great temple to Apollo Claros with a famous oracle that bore the same sort of relationship to Notion (Colophon) as Didyma did to Miletus which means that you won't find extensive ruins here, just traces of the temple and the buildings that went with it, including a "katagogeoin" which seems to have been an early inn for visiting pilgrims. Excavations have uncovered a Sacred Way linking the two sites just as there was between Didyma and Miletus although it was beneath water when I visited.

Claros1The Temple of Apollo is believed to date back to the 3rd century BC and was the only temple in Ionia that was originally built in the Doric style although it was extensively remodelled in Hellenistic times and again during the reign of the Enperor Hadrian. It was adorned with huge statues of Apollo, his sister Artemis and his mother Leto; there are replicas of the pieces that have been recovered at the site.

The temple was built over a sacred spring and these days it stands like an island in water. In Roman times it also seems to have served as a temple to the emperors Augustus and Tiberius.  As with the great temple at Didyma building work here never seems to have been completely finished.
