Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

The town centre lies on the former winding and narrow highway closely following the coast, about 1 km south of the current highway. Many side streets link each other.

The name of Narlıkuyu was Porto Calamie during Roman Empire. A small 4th century building, once part of a bath and baptism complex financed by Poimenios of Corycus, survives to the present. Corycus, now called Kızkalesi, is 3.5 kilometres (2.2 mi) east of Porto Calamie.

An inscription at the building's entrance reads : Dear Visitor, if you wonder who has discovered this miraculous water, know that he is Poimenios, the friend of the emperors and the honest administrator of the holy islands... Probably the said emprerors were Arcadius (378-408) and Honorius (384-423). The holy islands are the Princes' Islands of Marmara.

The building is now a museum. The floor mosaic depicts three Graces; Aglaia, Euphrosyne and Thalia, and a couple of partridges and doves. The local name of the mosaic is Üç Güzeller (English: Three beauites) The mosaic refers to the mitological story of baptism of Aphrodite.

SİTES TO VISIT
The main attraction of the town is Heaven and Hell chasms (Cennet-Cehennem) and the Asthma Cave, all located very near each other. The cliff of Heaven will welcome you to this area which overlooks the sea from a distance.

Heaven (Cennet)
Of the two chasms which were formed when ceilings of two underground caves collapsed, this bigger one resembles a green, peaceful heaven with evergreen shrubs and trees growing on its bottom. It is possible to reach the bottom, which also has ruins of a monastery, by climbing down ancient stairs (452 of them, and as every descent has an ascend, it is not advisable for those having heart and respiration problems, especially in summer). You can buy a ticket to go down inside the chasm, though you can view it from above on the road immediately on the edge of the cliff of the chasm for free.

Top opening of Cennet is 250 x 110 m2 ( 820 x 360 ft2 ) and its average dept is 70 metres (230 ft). It is possible to reach the bottom of Cennet by a primitive staircase composed of 300 steps. At the bottom towards south, there is a smaller and 150 steps deeper cave. In this cave are the ruins of a monastery built in the 5th century by a certain Paulus and dedicated to Virgin Mary. In this monastery one can hear the sound of a small underground stream from the monastery to the gulf of Narlıkuyu.

Hell (Cehennem)
200 mt north of Heaven; follow the path starting from next to the gates of the stairs to Heaven's bottom. A post-apocalyptic abyss full of sharp stalagmites when compared with Heaven, the bottom of this 78-metre deep pit is, however, full of deep green -even emerald green- plants which look even more peaceful and exotic than Heaven's. This was where Zeus was believed to imprison Typhon in ancient times. Unlike Heaven, it is not possible to go down into the Hell, with only a balcony-like viewing area hanging over the cliff of the pit.

Cehennem is a deeper sinkhole with a depth of 128 metres (420 ft). But its top opening is smaller with dimensions 70 x 50 m2 ( 210 x 150 ft2 ) . More over, the upper edge of the opening is concave. So, it is impossible to reach the bottom of Cehennem.

Asthma Cave (Astım Mağarası)
About 500 mt west of Heaven; walk on the tarmac road to the opposite direction of Hell. Entrance is from the basement of one of the shops in the area.

FISH RESTAURANTS
They are clean and have pleasant services. Fishes available due to seasons.

Yapraklı Bay is to the right of the road between Atakent and Mersin. You become enchanted the moment you see the clear and turquoise sea that is surrounded by rocks. Cold water that is coming from the ground is a nice change in the heat of summer. You can go for a swim or you can read a book under the shadows of trees while listening the sound of waves. Yapraklı Bay is visited both for swimming and for treatment purposes. The sea has two layers here: top layer is 8° C cold water and the lower layer is the 28° C hot water. Many people come to this mysterious bay for physiotherapy.

Dana Adası (also called Kargacık Adası, Latin Pithyussa) is a small Mediterranean island of Turkey. Dana Adası lies parallel to south coast of Turkey in the province of Mersin. The distance from the shore is 2.5 km (1.55 mi or 1.35 nmi). The passage between the main land and the island which is known as Kargacık Adası strait is a convenient passage for maritime traffic.

The shape of the island is roughly rectangular with dimensions 2.7 x 0.9 km. The highest peak is 250 metres (820 ft). Dana Adası is quite rocky and covered with macquis groves and yellow pine forest.

The island had been inhabited during the Roman and early Byzantine era. There are ruins of a few churches, graves, houses, aqueducts, a Roman bath and a harbour establishment at the north of the island. There are also some ruins at the southern coast of the main land facing the island. Probably, these two settlements were the control posts holding the two sides of the strait. According to some sources, the French merchants also used the island as their port during Middle Ages.

North Shores : Close to winds

Wonderful place for underwater activities and divers around the island.

Cape Tisan is a headland on the Mediterranean sea coast of Mersin Province, Turkey. The cape is near to Yeşilovacık town in Silifke district of Mersin. The distance to Silifke is 52 kilometres (32 mi) and to Mersin is 135 kilometres (84 mi).

The cape is actually the southernmost point of a circular spit of roughly 2.5 kilometres (1.6 mi) diameter connected to the mainland by an isthmus. The spit is famous for being home to Aphrodisias of Cilicia and the istmus has a pair of bays one in each side. In the Middle Ages the east bay was named Limni Aphrodisias and the west bay was named Limni Etheros .

Modern popular names are Cleopatra's bay for the east bay and Pirates' bay (Turkish: Korsan koyu) for the west bay. Both bays are popular beaches and in fact the cape is named after a site of marine resorts just north of the isthmus. However owing to dominant lodos winds of the Mediterranean coast, the Pirates' bay is not as sheltered as the Cleoptra's bay.

Owing to dominant lodos winds of the Mediterranean coast, Cleoptra's bay is very good sheltered.

The foundation date оf the ancient settlement іs unknown. But іt wаs а port оf Ptolemaic Egypt іn the fourth century BC. The settlement wаs incorporated іntо Roman Empire аnd іn the marine book Ps.Skylax written іn 101 AD, the settlement wаs named Cap Aphrodisias . During the early Middle Ages when the port wаs а part оf Byzantine Empire, іt wаs named Porto Cavaliere. Then іt faded away. The location оf the long forgotten ruins wаs discovered by Austrian Archaeologist Rudolf Heberdey іn 1891.

The ruins
There аre ruins оf а necropol, а cistern, city walls аnd floor mosaics оf а 4th-century church named St.Panteleon. Іn 1987, Ludwig Budde frоm Germany published hіs book St.Pantaleon von Aphrodisias іn Kilikien аbоut the church. But mоst оf the mosaics аre nоt unearthed yet.

HISTORICAL PLACES
The ruins of Aphrodisias (not to be confused with the well known ancient settlement in Aydın Province) are on a cape a few kilometers east of Yeşilovacık. These ruins, now called Tisan, date back to 7th century BC of Hellenistic age. During the last years of Seljuk Empire Aphrodisias lost its former importance. In 1210 Leo I, the king of Lesser Armenia sold this town to Knights Hospitaller. The knights renamed the city as Porto Cabalieri. However, this medieval town didn't survive.

BOĞSAK KOYU ANCHORAGE

Taşucu, Silifke - Mersin - Turkey

Boğsak is at the sea side. A picturesque hamlet, it is a popular seaside resort for Mersin residents. There are also popular beaches and historical castles around Boğsak.

Fener Adası
GPS : 36°16'02.2"N 33°49'33.5"E / 36.267291, 33.825972

Located in the ancient province of Isauria on the Mediterranean coast - and today deserted apart from occasional visiting divers and fishermen - Boğsak Island stands out from the surrounding coastlands and islands as home to a well-preserved settlement dating from late antiquity. Sizeable Christian settlement with complex infrastructure and architecture was created on the small island between the 4th and 7th centuries.’ Located 300 metres from the closest mainland, the island has a total landmass of just seven hectares. By contrast, nearby Dana Island (ancient ‘Pityussa’), 8 km southwest of Boğsak, with its far greater landmass of 280 hectares, does not seem to have accommodated such a large settlement.

Written sources do not reveal much about the settlements on Boğsak Island. However, the only inscription from the island (now housed at the Silifke Museum), dating from the 5-6th centuries, records the settlement as Asteria, which was furbished with buildings worthy of a city. Thus, it can be presumed that this was a wealthy village which did not get the status of a city. The wide bay at Boğsak, well-protected from the north winds, must have offered anchorage, provisions and other amenities to ships and boats along this maritime route.

The settlement on the island might have served as a post to control this channel, as well as to notify the mainland about maritime traffic. The island, without arable surfaces, water, wood or any other natural resources, was dependent on coastal settlements for provisioning. Thus, its existence and functions were tightly connected to the settlement at Boğsak Bay and the maritime trade.

On the upper parts of the north, northeast, west and south slopes, descending from the summit, extended a large necropolis from Roman and Early Byzantine periods. The mountainous region was ripe for olive oil production, and research indicates that olive trees and their products from the hinterland of Boğsak Bay were an integral part of the region’s economy. However, it has not yet proved possible to paint an entire picture of the agricultural capacity of the hinterland of the Boğsak Bay.

Seven churches on the island, built sometime during the second half of the 5th and the first half of the 6th centuries (these are tentaive and the actual dates are still being determined). One is significantly larger than the others; five are of relatively similar size and one is smaller, more of a chapel than a church. All the columns and capitals of the churches were made from local limestone. Sumptuous marble elements, including pieces of opus sectile on the pavement of some of the churches, as well as mosaics, have been discovered. The expensive marble found on Boğsak sets it apart from other rural settlements.

Like other Isaurian settlements, the 5th and 6th centuries were marked by intense Christianity. An inscription found in one of the churches translates as "Long live Ἀsteria, built like a city". Six out of the seven churches are positioned on the eastern coast, easily visible to incoming ships.

A substantial amount of pottery, glass and metal remains have been found. Though the pottery is still being studied, initial results indicate they are from the 4-7th centuries. Ten bronze coins have also been discovered, all in pretty good condition. No pottery or coins have been found dating beyond the 7th century, but this doesn’t mean there was no settlement on the island after this time.
