Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

Older name is Kastro. Located on the north-eastern coast of island, there is an antique castle near the village. Kaleköy also has a small port which was constructed by the French Navy during the occupation in the First World War, and is now used for fishing-boats and yachts. Gökçeada is one of the eight "cittaslows" of Turkey and is the second in being accepted as one, after Seferihisar.

Gökçeada is quite prosperous with good water resources, many small lakes, thunderously flowing water fountains and a waterfall as well. Island is a lovely resort with its calm, beautiful and clean nature. Gökçeada is the 4th island of the world from the point of plenty of fresh water sources in the world. When traveling widely around the island one notices how large it is, especially after seeing its vineyards, vegetable and fruit gardens, lakes, and beaches.

Located on the north-eastern coast of island, there is an antique castle near the village. Kaleköy also has a small port which was constructed by the French Navy during the occupation in the First World War, and is now used for fishing-boats and yachts.

Kaleköy 4 km north of Merkez, this village is consisted of two parts (10 minutes away from each other by walking): the newer coastal hood and the upper part on the top of a hill (Yukarı Kaleköy). There is a citadel (or what is left of a citadel) in the upper part. There is no admission fee, and it is virtually open 24 hours a day since there is no gate nor a guard.

Kaleköy is a small village on the north coast of the Turkish island of Gökçeada, 17 miles NNW of the entrance to the Dardanelles. An attractive village much frequented in the summer by Turkish tourists from the mainland, until 2008 Kaleköy only offered a tiny fishing harbour which was much too shallow and restricted for most yachts. In that year, however, a huge new harbour development was completed, with the intention of inviting tenders to operate a marina here.

In the meantime, the harbour has filled up with local boats on laid moorings and alongside its quays, but there is usually still space for a visiting yacht to squeeze in. Kaleköy now offers a much more inviting option for a visit to Gökçeada by yacht than the old ferry harbour of Kuzu Limanı 3 miles south, which remains rather remote and has few facilities.

HARBOUR

Approach and Navigation
Most yachts are likely to approach Kaleköy from south. From this direction, a yacht will pass the ferry harbour of Kuzu Limanı on the NE corner of the island and round a couple of small headlands before a ruined Ottoman castle appears on a high bluff on the eastern side of the bay of Kaleköy. The harbour, constructed in the bay immediately to the west of the bluff, consists of a long, curved northern breakwater extending across the bay and a shorter southern one extending out from the beach.

On closer approach, the northern breakwater will open up and the two white light structures on the end of the breakwaters will be visible. In the approach from north and west, the long breakwater and the village behind and a large resort hotel at the E side of the bay will be visible from some distance off. The harbour is entered from WSW, being careful to stay about 10 m -15 m off the end of the northern breakwater to avoid a sand bar that has built up some 50 m S of the entrance. Depths in the entrance are 5 m - 5.5 m. At night, a white light flashing 4 seconds marks the end of the high bluff at the eastern end of the bay and the breakwaters show flashing port and starboard lights.

Mooring
Behind the high breakwater the harbour offers excellent shelter in winds from any direction. Since its completion, however, it has rapidly filled with small fishing boats and local leisure craft. The eastern quay immediately in front of the village and the southern breakwater are both filled with small craft moorings and the only place a yacht is likely to find a space is alongside the long northern breakwater, which is quayed for its entire length. Depths here are 3 m - 3.5 m. Go alongside wherever you can; it may be necessary to berth alongside a fishing boat if the harbour is very full. The quay is in good condition and well supplied with mooring rings and bollards.

Anchorages
The nearest alternative anchorage on Gökçeada is the harbour of Kuzu Limanı 3 miles south. In an emergency, Kaleköy harbour itself is large enough to anchor off in the middle in 3.5 - 4.5 m. The bottom is sand and reasonable holding.

Gökçeada in Turkey (older name in Turkish: İmroz is the largest island of Turkey, part of Çanakkale Province. It is located at the entrance of Saros Bay in the northern Aegean Sea, also the westernmost point of Turkey (Avlaka peninsula).

Gökçeada with its boundless, sandy beaches, clean sea is a wonderful beauty in which the past and present live together. There are churches, mosques, monasteries, old Greek houses and modem examples of architecture where the different cultures come together in our island. It is possible to have a pleasure of blue sea on Aydıncık, Yuvalı, Yıldızköy, Uğurlu and Gizlikoy natural beaches and also have a picnic in Tepeköy Çınaraltı and Marmaros TIGEM picnic area.

The marina Kuzu Limanı is located in Bademli, Gökçeada. Its users may take advantage of its basic range of services. It is a marina with moderate capacity for medium size boats. Kuzu Limanı is the old harbour and ferry port for the Turkish island of Gökçeada, 15 miles NNW of the Dardanelles. It offers very few facilities for yachts but is well sheltered from the prevailing N/NE winds.

MARINA
Kuzu Limanı is the old harbour and ferry port for the Turkish island of Gökçeada, 15 miles NNW of the Dardanelles. It offers very few facilities for yachts but is well sheltered from the prevailing N/NE winds. The harbour is quite remote and the only link with the rest of the island is a regular bus service to Gökçeada town, or Centrum as it is also known. It is best regarded as a safe haven if overtaken by bad weather or a brief stopover en route to the much nicer harbour of Kaleköy three miles NNW or to the Greek island of Samothrace 18 miles NW.

Anchorages
There are a few anchorages along the S side of the island which can be used in settled weather, but none of them is really suited for overnight anchoring.

Approach and Navigation
There are no dangers in the approach from S or N, but note that there are extensive shoals off the SW and W coasts of the island, which are avoided by passing at least a mile offshore. In the approach to the island from S or W, note also that there is a significant W-going current along the southern side. The long northern breakwater of Kuzu Limanı and the shorter southern one are clearly visibly once rounding the headlands to N or S of the harbour. The harbour is entered from SE.

Kuzu Limanı is on the NE quadrant of Kaşkavak Point of Gökçeada. The port affords adequate shelter for yachts lying stern or bows to the shore or along the quay. It is best regarded as a safe haven if overtaken by bad weather or a brief stopover en route to the much nicer harbour of Kaleköy three miles NNW or to the Greek island of Samosthrace 18 miles NW.

Berthing Options
There are several berthing options for a yacht in Kuzu Limanı, none of them ideal but suitable for a range of weather and wind conditions.
Coastguard jetty : Note that this is not the berth where the coastguard vessel usually moors, but the short jetty in front of the coastguard offices at the northern end of the harbour. The jetty is just long enough for a yacht of up to 15 m - 18 m to lie alongside, with plenty of mooring bollards (unlike other parts of the harbour) and depths of around 2.5 m - 3.5 m. Be careful of some rock ballasting towards the western end of the jetty, which may reduce the depth in this part. Shelter here is excellent.

Coastguard Jetty
Note that this is not the berth where the coastguard vessel usually moors, but the short jetty in front of the coastguard offices at the northern end of the harbour. The jetty is just long enough for a yacht of up to 15 - 18 metres to lie alongside, with plenty of mooring bollards (unlike other parts of the harbour) and depths of around 2.5 - 3.5 metres. Be careful of some rock ballasting towards the western end of the jetty, which may reduce the depth in this part. Shelter here is excellent.

Old ferry quay : This is the high quay along the root of the long, northern breakwater, just east of the coastguard berth. Depths here are over 6 m. Much of the quay is lined with huge black tyres and mooring bollards are few and far between. However, there are two gaps in the tyres, at the end and towards the middle of the quay, where a yacht can squeeze in alongside. The quay here is very high and low freeboard yachts will struggle to get their lines ashore. This quay is occasionally used by cargo vessels and may be occupied on arrival. Shelter here is very good.

New ferry quay : The ferry now berths on the north side of the small dock at the S end of the harbour, and there is space on the south side for a yacht to moor in depths of 6 m or more. There are also plenty of bollards and mooring rings here. Again, the quay is quite high. The only disadvantage of this position is that it is rather exposed in strong winds from N/NE and, although not dangerous, an unpleasant chop will be experienced in these conditions. Shelter is therefore no more than adequate except in settled weather.

Small boat harbour : Note that the small harbour at the NE end of the harbour, beyond the coastguard berth, is too shallow for most yachts, especially on the N and E side, and is in any case usually full of local boats

Moorings: 80 moorings
To facilitate the mooring process, the personnel at the port is there to assist you with anything you may need.

Outer Breakwater : 971 m
Inner Breakwater : 350 m

Draught max : 3 meters
Length max : 12 meters

BEACHES
Aydıncık beach
Aydıncık beach and the salt lake - in the southeast part of the island, about 10 km from Merkez. A low dune separates the sea and the lake, which is very shallow, about 1 m depth in its deepest parts. In the olden times, before commercial packaged salt was available, islanders were producing their own salt here. The lake smells funny because of some natural chemical it contains, which is said to cure some skin problems. It is a good idea to first have a mud bath in the lake and then rinse in the sea (Be careful, there are lots of sea urchins - which can spoil your trip if prick on your skin, especially feet- around this area).

Yıldızkoy beach
Can be reached by following the trail starting behind Yenibademli (10 minutes). All around the cove is covered by mountains of black volcanic rocks.

HOT SPRING
It has been reported by the scientists that the density of sulfur in Salt lake around Aydıncık during the summer season helps for those who have rheumatic, calcinosis and psoriasis illnesses.
