Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

HOŞKÖY LIGHTHOUSE RESTAURANT

Hoşköy, Şarköy - Tekirdağ - Turkey

GPS : 40°42'10.9"N 27°18'32.2"E / 40.703015, 27.308951

Hoşköy is situated near the Mürefte region. Its former name was the "Hora Lighthouse." Tower is constructed out of iron sheet and girders originally brought over from France, and it bears its original structure in our days. Built by French engineers in 1861 by the order of Sultan Abdülmecid I, the Hora Lighthouse continues to enlighten the routes of the ships floating on the Sea of Marmara.

In 2017 it was reported in poor condition and in need of restoration. The Tekirdağ Metropolitan Municipality and Şarköy Municipality expressed some desire to acquire it as a tourist attraction.

Construction Date : 01.01.1861

Location : Located on the shores of the Marmara Sea in Tekirdağ, the lighthouse in Hoşköy was built by the French in 1861. Situated on a high hill.

Building : Cast iron tower with lantern and gallery, attached to a 1-story keeper's house. Lighthouse painted white. This historic lighthouse, on the west side of the Sea of Marmara, guides ships into the Dardanelles. The Coastal Safety Directorate has the history of the station. Located near the village of Hosköy, about 20 km (13 mi) northeast of the larger town of Şarköy. The lighthouse tower was built of metal using bolts and no welds. Site open, tower may be open by arrangement with the keeper.

Focal Plane : 50 m ( 164 ft )
Tower Height : 20 m  (72 ft)

Character : W. Fl. (2) 10.0 Second

Visibility Range : 20 nautical miles

Illuminate Type : -
Lighthouse System : Devvar
Flasher Type : -
Electric Lamp :  1000 Watt
Bulb Type : 220 V
Energy : Electricity

Light
Oil lamp has primarily been used and then high intense filament lamps work with LPCo as a light source and it is currently provided an illumination with the electric lamp of 1000 W. In order to be seen from the long distance by strengthen the light source, three pieces cotodiyoptric cylinder lenses which has optical distance of 375 mm as a optic system has been used.

Triangle optical panels had placed on circular platform which float on bath of mercury. Fixed light source illuminates on focus and when the optic is rotated on the platform it will give out flashes during the period of rotation.

It has weight that move vertically down on steel wires in the tower. As the weight falls, so the clock is driven and when the weight reaches the bottom, the clock stops unless the weight is wound back up to the top of its travel. So the lighthouse keepers had to wind up their lighthouse optic clock with a large winding handle attached to the mechanism that was located immediately below the optical system. This is look like clockwork mechanism at houses. Lighthouse keeper still winds mechanism at every third hour.

Above mentioned mechanism and optical panels has been under protection and still using in service. Lighthouse and guardian house is being under protection as national heritage by General Directorate of Coastal Safety and Salvage Administrations.

Ereğli is near a small pointed headland on the north shore of the Marmara Sea. It is called Marmaraereğlisi (or Marmara Ereğli in colloquial usage) to distinguish it from the two other large towns in Turkey. The main livelihood source of the city are fishing, cultivation (watermelon, barley, sunflower, wheat), husbandry and some industry.

Ereğli is a town with little to offer, and especially quiet in winter. The coast on either side of Ereğli is lined with hotels and compounds of holiday properties. The holiday compounds are complicated mazes of little roads tightly packed with villas or buildings of holiday flats, leading down to the sea. Some of them have cafes and restaurants on the seafront, sometimes open to people from outside the compound.

HARBOUR
There is a small fishermen shelter. Ereğli has two natural harbours and three small ports.

Capacity : 65 Boats

Entrance
Natural port is open to NE wind but closed other winds. Very good shelter to protect from strong SE and western winds.

OPEN AIR MUSEUM
There is an open-air display of marble columns and sarcophagi - as is usual in any ancient Roman site- dating back to Perinthos in a park located a few meters down the town square towards eastern waterfront. This is probably the historical sight in best condition.

PERINTHOS
The ostentatious days of Perinthos are long gone for more than two millenia, so many of the historical sights described here are slowly vanishing. In fact many can be distinguished from natural formations only by careful eyes and only people really interested in history may find them worth of a check.

HERACLEA
An ancient Greek colony of the island of Samos was founded here in 600 BC. The area was known in Ancient Greek as later called Heraclea, It is said to have been a Samian colony, founded about 599 BC. According to John Tzetzes, its original name was Mygdonia; later it was called Heraclea (Heraclea Thraciae, Heraclea Perinthus). It is famous chiefly for its stubborn and successful resistance to Philip II of Macedon in 340 BC; at that time it seems to have been more important than Byzantium itself. Christian virgin Saint Glyceria suffered her martyrdom at Heraclea (modern Marmara Ereğli) in the year 177.

Old town
Situated on the top of the hill rising on the tip of the peninsula, this is the oldest part of town. There are many houses around maintaining Greek architecture but most are very badly in need of a repair. One exception is Constantine’s Residence, a stone two-floor mansion known by its former owner’s name. It’s situated near the western coast, a block or so down the town square.

City walls
Most of the old town is surrounded by ancient city walls, though in most parts they resemble more of a somewhat high garden fence rather than grandiose city walls. You may occasionally spot a (largely ruined) tower here and there if you walk around them a bit.

Roman breakwater
Located on the western coast, you can more easily spot it from the top of the cliff as it appears as random rocks on two straight rows lying parallel to each other when you hit to the beach next to it. Nice to watch the cormorants playing with the waves though.

Amphitheatre
You will not find the usual marble seats as they are covered by grass and earth several feet thick. However the amphitheatral form of half-moon ascending from a stage is still clearly distinguishable, in fact it looks more majestic with the grass and all. To get there from the town centre, walk uphill through the old town, and as you come to the edge of the cliff overlooking the sea, turn left (towards east).

You'll walk on an unpaved path for about 15-20 minutes passing beside, below and over some remnants of city walls. The amphitheatre is located right below the lighthouse on the top of the hill: Take the lighthouse (which will appear after you walked for about 5-10 min) as a bearing if it'll make it easier for you. It offers a very beautiful view of the sea located below the cliff next to the amphitheatre.

Tumulii
These are conical not-so-high hills, rising suddenly out of ground and somewhat natural at first glance. They are actually man-made, remained from Thracians, the native folk of this region before the arrival of Greeks and Romans among others. They were erected to serve as mausoleum for Thracian kings and nobles (think of them as local variation of the pyramids, though these two are historically unrelated).

Although the Tumulii are scattered all around Thrace, the area about 5 km north of Marmara Ereğlisi has an exceptionally high number of tumulii, as Perinthos was an important centre of the region even before Romans. The Tumulii 5 km out of town may not worth the trouble to go there, so you may take a distant look at a quite a few of them in the same frame when returning from the amphitheatre, just before entering the old town and immediately after the path swings to right (towards north).

FISH RESTAURANTS
Fish Restaurants are very famous with their fishes, cooking and services. Fishes available due to seasons.

Tekirdağ is a new, commercial harbour on the north shore of the Sea of Marmara in Turkey, 67 miles west of Istanbul and 72 miles NE of Çanakkale in the Dardanelles. There is currently no provision for yachts in the harbour and visitors here must find a place here alongside the quays wherever they can.

It may be necessary to lie alongside a fishing boat at busy times. Shelter is good from the prevailing N/NE winds, although the harbour is open SW.

Local Weather
Winds along the north coast of the Sea of Marmara are generally from N/NE, which can give some excellent sailing in flat water between the Dardanelles and Istanbul. Winds tend to be at their strongest in mid to late afternoon.

Approach and Navigation
The harbour shown in some older pilot books no longer exists. It has been filled in and is now a huge car park, funfair and extended row of cafes and restaurants. A completely new harbour has been created to the E of the old facility, which it is intended to establish as a full marina once tenders for its operation have been received.

Meanwhile, mooring in here is a "free for all" and visiting yachts must find a space (usually alongside a quay or another vessel) wherever they can. Entrance to the new harbour is from SW and depths in the entrance are 5.5 m. Depths at the quays range from 3.0 - 5.5 m. Holding is good in mud.

PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Mürefte is a village in the district of Şarköy on the Sea of Marmara southwest of Tekirdağ. Mürefte, the town has a small square, a long seaport and a few fish restaurants near the seaside. Getting more lively in the summer, Murefte is famous for its permanently blowing wind, olives, grapes and wine. Its wine, olives and olive oil is world famous. The main livelihood source of the village are vineyards, olive groves and fishing.

MARINA
Mürefte is a relatively new harbour constructed on the north coast of the Sea of Marmara, 22 miles SW of Tekirdağ and 50 miles NW of Çanakkale. The harbour is a useful port of refuge along the relatively poorly supplied north coast of the Sea of Marmara. In settled weather, a yacht is better off anchoring in the lee of the harbour just SW of the breakwater and, in unsettled weather, anchoring in the harbour itself away from the quays. Shelter in the harbour is good from the prevailing winds, but it is completely open to the SW.

The harbour is around 1.5 miles E of the town of Mürefte (which is not really worth visiting anyway). Nearest provisions 1.5 miles S in Mürefte.

Approach and Navigation
The harbour breakwaters are easily identifiable from all directions. The entrance is oriented SW. Depths in the entrance are 5 m.

Local Weather
Winds along the north coast of the Sea of Marmara are generally from N/NE, which can give some excellent sailing in flat water between the Dardanelles and Istanbul. Winds tend to be at their strongest in mid to late afternoon. When you enter a port between the two breakwater lighthouses faced dock is very safe for NE wind. When SW wind blow safe dock is beside of red lighted lighthouse.

Depth
General depth is over 4 m but a bank near red lighted lighthouse is less then 2 m.

Berthing Options
The W quay is rather shallow, with depths of 1.5 - 1.75 metres. The best place for a yacht is at the end of the N quay, where a yacht can lie alongside in depths of 2.75 metres. This position offers excellent shelter from the prevailing N/NE winds. Second best option is to do an anchor moor on the S quay, where there is space for around 12 - 15 yachts. However, depths are uneven here and range from 1.75 to 2 metres, so deeper draft yachts may prefer to go bows to. However, in view of the exorbitant charge for mooring in the harbour, many yachts may prefer to anchor off or even avoid the harbour altogether.

Anchorages
In settled weather, anchor in the lee of the S breakwater, where there is good protection from the prevailing winds. Depths are 4 - 5 metres and the holding is good in sand. In unsettled weather, anchor in the harbour itself.

Capacity : 150 Boats

Outer Breakwater : 580 m

VINEYARDS
The seaside village of Mürefte lies in an area of rich, fertile soil which is perfect for wine-growing.

WINE FACTORIES
The wines produced in this area are legendary and it is small wonder that most of the major wine producers in Turkey have vineyards in Mürefte. Several wine producers offer "degustation" sessions to let you sample their products. Some, but not all of them, charge a fee.

FISH RESTAURANTS
Fish Restaurants are very famous with their fishes, cooking and services. Fishes available due to seasons.
