Once it was a sand beach open to the sea. Now it has been turned into a small cove with a quay and a breakwater providing for the colorful fishing boats of Akçakoca. Black Sea fishermen are known for their infatuation with colors. They like painting their boats in the colors of the rainbow. Now all these colorful fishing boats moored in the shelter have become yet another attractive feature of Akçakoca. Boats chugging in and out of the shelter, fishermen mending their nets and the general activity in this part of the town provide an excellent photography opportunity for the camera buffs.
Akçakoca starts the day early. When you sit at one of the benches in the port, early in the morning and watch the activity going on in the harbor, you cannot miss that everybody on the boats, captains and crew, fishermen and their apprentices work in solidarity. If a boat is going to be hauled over ground or vice versa, everybody leaves their personal job and volunteer their help for the work that is going to be done.
Every morning there is a little meeting at the harbor where people discuss jobs to be done for the day. Then there is a distribution of jobs. If a boat is going to be launched into the sea, people bring logs, lubricate them, place them under the vessel, steel ropes are fastened to the boat on the one end and to the capstan on the other.
As the vessel moves from the ground to the water, everybody lend a hand; the bigger the boat, the greater the number of helpers. A lot of commotion accompanies the work naturally. There is quite a bit of shouting that goes on mixing with jokes flying in the air.
Akçakoca Harbour lies on the Black Sea coast of Turkey. Generally good shelter although exposed to wind from the W.

RESTAURANT & CAFE
An interesting feature of a walk on the seafront is the shape of cafes. The wooden huts used in the villages of this region to store corncobs serve as cafes on the seafront. Those who sit under shades of myriad colors and have their tea, coffee or cold drinks can watch the Black Sea and feel they are really at a special spot.
Good restaurants around the harbour and more in the town. The road that runs parallel to the seafront offers a lot of good quality restaurants and resting places. During the summer, at the peak of the tourist season this road is closed to all motor traffic and becomes a “pedestrians only” promenade.
In the restaurants, traditional mezes or appetizers served in small plates as appetizers are brought to the table in large trays for you to select. These appetizers usually consist of feta cheese, tomatoes, slices of melon and water melon, shakshuka, a tasty dish made of fried eggplant, green peppers, tomatoes, Russian salad, thick yogurt with spices, a hot peppery paste called acılı ezme, zucchini paste fried with parsley and eggs called mücver.
Fish restaurants on the Akçakoca seafront definitely have the best view in town. They offer fast and attentive service to their patrons where the unique sunset over the Black Sea can be savored over a delightful dinner. The sound of waves on the pebbles leaves an unforgettable mark in your memory. Those who watch the sunset on the breakwater, slowly walk back in the crimson light after the sun goes down.
You can have fried mussels with garlic sauce as a hot meze and enjoy the fresh season salad with greens. Then you can pass on to the main dishes of your choice, grilled meat or fish. Sea bass and porgy come from fish farms now quite in fashion in Turkey. But there are also delicious local fish like lüfer and çinakop, a Black Sea version of bluefish but more tastier than the ones you get in the ocean, or red mullet. Fresh anchovies or horse mackerel, a Mediterranean and Black Sea relative of Britain’s scad or horse mackerel are also local seafood delicacies that should be added to your culinary experience.
Walking along the Akçakoca seafront you will readily recognize the different architectural style of the cafes. They are built in the same style as the wooden huts in villages called bagen, where corncobs are stored. There are shades and umbrellas in various colors around these cafes under which you can sit and enjoy a cup of tea and wonder about the rustic architecture of these huts that is yet another interesting characteristic of this town.
There is the corn bread that will come to your table without you asking for it. It looks like a cookie and edible just like that. It is a specialty of the Black Sea bakeries. The meal is not over yet. You must try the local sweet called melenguce. This is made of phyllo, an extremely thin dough pastry filled with walnuts and cream. The dough is kneaded and then cooked on a hot tin plate. Then sugar syrup is added.
The sweet is served with season’s fruits. If you wish for it, you can complement it with a cup of ice cream. The meal ends with Turkish coffee with a little small glass of crème de menthe on the side. You can now take a walk on the seafront for digesting your food before going to sleep.

Akçakoca is Düzce’s coastline shore and the shortest route between Central Anatolia and an opening to the sea. People living in inland Ankara discovered years ago, this charming Black Sea town as one of their favorite holidaymaking places.
Akçakoca is a town and a district of Düzce Province in the Black Sea region of Turkey. It is located on the shore of the Black Sea about 200 km east of Istanbul, Turkey. The town is named after a Turkish chieftain of the 14th century CE who added the area to the Ottoman domain. There is a statue of Akçakoca Bey in the centre of the town and a modern mosque of very unusual architecture. Its touristic attractions are beaches and a small ruined castle. It is centre of an extensive region of cultivation of hazelnuts.
Good sandy beaches. Its sea, sunsets, architecture, raspberries and hazelnuts make Akçakoca a memorable place. It has won itself many admirers with its kilometers long sand beaches, lush greenery, historical castle, caves, waterfalls and plateaus and above all warm, cordial people and local tastes.
