Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

Poyrazköy is one of the villages nearest to the Black Sea and is located on the Anatolian side of the Bosphorus. In order to reach this pretty village you must pass Beykoz and about 4 km later follow the Poyrazköy - Anadolu Feneri signs. Poyrazköy or simple Poyraz is located less than a mile from the Black Sea, on the Asian bank, is a good place to anchor especially when waiting for the fog to clear. It is also a pleasant place to spend the night before venturing out of the strait.

Poyraz Harbour lies at the NE end of the Bosphorus. There is excellent all round shelter. Poyrazköy is naturally protected from the rough winds and currents and is therefore a suitable choice for yachts and boats to anchor therefore during the summertime and weekends. It is quite crowed during these times.

Poyrazköy is an excellent place for a break or for shelter while sailing from Istanbul to the Black Sea. The breakwater is conspicuous with the minaret on the hillside behind the harbour. The view of the Bosphorus from the village is very good. From the minaret a bridge leads out to the gun emplacements and ammunition stores and a great view of the Bosphorus.

Approach & Entrance
The harbour lies at the NE end of the Bosphorus 1.5 miles short of the Black Sea. The breakwater will be seen S of a small fort that sits on a nearby point.
Danger : Very often there is a heavy fog and the strait is closed to traffic. Always listen to Bosphorus Control on the VHF (channels 11,12, and 13).

Berths & Anchorages
Anchor behind the breakwater where convenient with or without a line to the breakwater. Holding is good. The inside of the breakwater is quayed and a yacht can find space between the fishing boats and other local craft to anchor and tie stern to, but anchoring is best. Poyrazköy is protected from wind and strong water currents, and is thus ideal for casting anchor.
