HISTORICAL SITES
Bergama (Pergamon)
The important archaeological site of Bergama (Pergamon) is about half an hour by car and is well worth a visit, as it is one of the largest and best preserved sites in Turkey. Pergamum was a small settlement during the archaic period. It is mentioned by Homer in The Ilıad - he reports that the god Zeus travelled from Mount Olympus to Pergamum to watch the Trojan War.
The famous altar of Zeus in Pergamum is on the south of the theatre. It was constructed as a memorial of the victory against Galatians. The Great Altar of Pergamum is in the Berlin Museum. The base of this altar exists.
The library on the north was from the Hellenistic era. It was the largest in the ancient Greek civilization. Mark Antonia gave the whole collection to Cleopatra as wedding present. The remains near the library are some houses from the Hellenistic period. The theatre of Pergamum has a capacity of 10,000 spectators; this had the steepest seating of any known theatre in the ancient world. The temple of Dionysus nearby the theatre has an exquisite appearance.
The gymnasium was also a place for socializing and engaging in intellectual pursuits. Asclepius was on the south of Acropolis. The complex was containing small theatre, rooms for patients where cured by the sound of water and music. The dreams of patients were analyzed. Galen was the most famous doctor of Asclepius. Serapis temple is another notable structure from the A.D 1st century. The lower part of Pergamum was consisting Agora, school of sculpture and houses.
Roman period settlements are on the northwest of Pergamum. There was an amphitheatre with a capacity of 50,000 and a theatre for 30,000 spectators. Pergamum was occupied from the archaic period but was particularly powerful in Hellenistic and Roman times. Excavations in Pergamum are conducted by German archeologists. Carl Human discovered the Pergamum Altar.
Bergama Museum in the town is the first archeological museum in Turkey. Findings from the excavations in Pergamum are displayed.
Atarneus
Atarneus was an ancient Greek city in the region of Aeolis, Asia Minor. It lies on the mainland opposite the island of Lesbos, northeast of the town of Dikili in modern-day Turkey. Atarneus flowered in the 4th century BC, when it was the seat of government of Hermias of Atarneus, ruling over the area from Atarneus to Assos. The city was deserted by inhabitants in the 1st century AD, possibly following an outbreak of an unknown epidemic.
The city is known by many for its association with the life of Aristotle. After the death of his father, Aristotle was cared for and educated by Proxenus of Atarneus, possibly an uncle of his. At the Academy Aristotle made friends with Hermias, who was later to become the ruler of Atarneus. Indeed, after the death of Plato, Aristotle went to stay with Hermias, subsequently marrying Hermias's niece Pythia.
THERMAL SPRINGS & MUD BATHS
This region is rich in thermal springs and no trip to Turkey would be complete with a mud bath. Locally there is a lot to do - spas abound as the area is full of thermally warmed water with various curative powers . They are not expensive to use and if you are able to get some local fisherman to take you there are nearby beaches where the sea is warmed by thermal springs.
Zeytindalı Spa
Set amid a beautiful rural view and just 4 km from Dikili this thermal spa is hard to beat. With restaurants landscaped gardens even if you were not participating in a dip we would still recommend it. The thermal spas themselves consist of a totally private area for your group including a private pool of natural hot spring water, sleep quarters, a garden and toilet and shower. This trip in our opinion is one of the must do’s during your stay in Dikili.
Güzellik (Beauty) Spa
This spa, which is 4 km away from Bergama, has a dome and two marble pools. It is said that this spa is set during the period of Eumenes, the king of Bergama. Dikili's thermal springs of three thousand years of age, give health and healing to its visitors with its modern thermal facilities. Dikili's Mud & Bath Cures; are very useful for the treatments especially related with the veins, otorhinolaryngology (diseases of the ear, nose, and throat), gynecology and all kinds of rheumatic diseases.
The cure naturally formed by the rotten roots of the plants in the airless thermal waters, is the mud used for many treatments. Due to its containing the plants’ hormones, is also very useful for the toxin purification, slimming, peeling, wrinkle and celluloid treatments. It contains all the necessary elements for the skin. The macro and micro elements inside the mud act like estrogen and help the purified skin to be saturated. This is called the natural peeling. This valuable and quality mud is naturally being produced for three thousand years in Dikili. Both the mud and the thermal cure has no side effects.

HISTORICAL SITES
Çandarlı's name in antiquity was Pitane. The ruins are situated slightly outside the town itself. The little Aegean port town of Çandarli, known as Pitane in ancient times, was fortified by the Genoese in the 1300s, who hoped to keep its facilities and trade in their hands exclusively.
After the Ottoman conquest of Anatolia in the 1400s, Sultan Mehmet II (The Conqueror) restored the fortress in the 1450s, or at least so says the well-worn marble inscription near the main gate into the fortress. Sultan Mahmut II restored it again in 1814, and the Turkish government did the final restoration in 1955, returning it to the shape it had during the time of the Conquest in the 1400s.
The town's landmark is the 15th century Ottoman castle built by the Grand Vizier Çandarlı Halil Pasha. The castle, built to protect the Sultan Murat II who preferred to reside in nearby Manisa from a possible outside attack, is fully intact and open to visitors.
THE EXCAVATIONS IN ÇANDARLI
The ancient name of Çandarlı Bay is known as Elaitikos Kolpos. It is surrounded by: Kemikli Burnu at the north, Yıldırım Kaya and Aslan Burnu at the south. Conzo and Dorpfeld who did excavations in Bergama write that, there are the Terra Sigil Late pieces at the vineyard of Angelopoulos in peninsula section of Çandarlı. These types of cups were made in Sicily in first century AD. Saphianos, who worked in the same area in 1910-1911 as the representative of the Ottoman Empire, found Terra Sigil Late pieces at the same location. He also found some pieces belonged to the Greek Era.
Meanwhile, during the excavations done by Osman Hamdi Bey, who was the director of the museums of İstanbul, found countless Archaic Monochrome potteries, also they came across some Yortan type of cups in a grave. Decorated with uneven black spots, bright and brown colored these artifacts indicate that, a big settlement existed here at 2000 BC. It also has been mentioned that, a late Mycenaean Vase was found by Osman Hamdi Bey in a grave. The octopus, fish and the bird designs on this vase, symbolize the art of Rodish- Mesesische at 1st century BC.

ÇANDARLI KALESİ
History of Çandarlı goes back to 4000 BC. The castle and city took its name from the Amazon woman ‘’Pitane’’. According to the local legend; the Amazon women warriors ruled the region and mainly in the coastal city and it became Pitane - which means ‘’Women’s Town or the Queen City. The city was occupied by Hittites, Persians, Lydian’s, Byzantines, Seljuks and finally Ottomans.
The rectangular Çandarlı Castle was built in 13th century by the Genoese. The castle was rebuilt in 15th century by the Ottomans. The town's landmark is the Ottoman castle built by the Grand Vizier Çandarlı (2nd) Halil Pasha (to distinguish from his homonymous grandfather). The castle, built to protect the Sultan Murat II who preferred to reside in nearby Manisa from a possible outside attack, is fully intact and open to visitors.
The castle is a good example of scant traces of the thick fortification walls - reinforced by struts. The castle with five towers and crenels are impressive. Restoration works still continue. An archaic male statue - a full sized naked man, is now displayed in Bergama Archeological Museum.
