Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

Çandarlı is a sub-district town of Dikili; at the west Anatolia, within the boundaries of the city of İzmir. In the Aegean region after İzmir Bay, it is the second biggest bay that gets its name from Çandarlı. The Çandarlı Bay’s width is 20 km the length is 25 km The cove of Çandarlı is about 800 mt. wide and 20 mt. deep.

The bay has several residential areas such as; Çandarlı, Yenişakran, Aliağa, Foça and down to south it goes down to Karaburun Peninsula. The Çandarlı Bay, because the west side of it is the open sea, is not a safe place in the windy weathers. The sea traffic stops because of the high waves. The seashores of the bay have so many ins and outs and show many high slopes. The most important freshet of the bay is Bakırçay.

PORT
Çandarlı Port lies on the northern side of Çandarlı Bay. Eşek Adası (Islet) is on the east part of Değirman Adası Point. The entrance is from the western side. The area between the islets and the mainland provides all round shelter except southerlies, and it ends a nice sandy beach. The eastern side provides adequate shelter. Depths gradually shelve ashore. The bottom is muddy, providing good holding in depths of 4 - 8 meters.

Strong northerlies are dominant but, it does not build choppy seas. Sea water temperature is lower but, it has cool effect in hot summers. The pier on the west has limited space for the visiting yachts. Boats drop anchor and go to stern if there is room. There are private laid moorings lines around the jetty. The town center is behind the port. There is a small shelter for the fishing boats nearby the castle. This castle was built in 14th century.

It was put in service in 1983 and is located at western shoreline. It has 460 m Long main wave breaker and 150 boat capacity. It has security guards, provides electricity and pressured water to the boats. The cove also has the pulling ramp facilities for boat repairs and maintenances. The existing wave breaker was restored in 2011 because the old wave breaker wasn’t sufficient for the strong southwestern winds. To prevent the land slide around the wave breaker, the retaining wall was built. And the new landscape, created a proper look to the cove that suitable for Çandarlı.

MARINA
Çandarli is a fairly attractive anchorage in a small village. It provides fairly good shelter from the meltemi. The small harbor W of the castle is not really usable.

HISTORICAL SITES
Çandarlı's name in antiquity was Pitane. The ruins are situated slightly outside the town itself. The little Aegean port town of Çandarli, known as Pitane in ancient times, was fortified by the Genoese in the 1300s, who hoped to keep its facilities and trade in their hands exclusively.

After the Ottoman conquest of Anatolia in the 1400s, Sultan Mehmet II (The Conqueror) restored the fortress in the 1450s, or at least so says the well-worn marble inscription near the main gate into the fortress. Sultan Mahmut II restored it again in 1814, and the Turkish government did the final restoration in 1955, returning it to the shape it had during the time of the Conquest in the 1400s.

The town's landmark is the 15th century Ottoman castle built by the Grand Vizier Çandarlı Halil Pasha. The castle, built to protect the Sultan Murat II who preferred to reside in nearby Manisa from a possible outside attack, is fully intact and open to visitors.

THE EXCAVATIONS IN ÇANDARLI
The ancient name of Çandarlı Bay is known as Elaitikos Kolpos. It is surrounded by: Kemikli Burnu at the north, Yıldırım Kaya and Aslan Burnu at the south. Conzo and Dorpfeld who did excavations in Bergama write that, there are the Terra Sigil Late pieces at the vineyard of Angelopoulos in peninsula section of Çandarlı. These types of cups were made in Sicily in first century AD. Saphianos, who worked in the same area in 1910-1911 as the representative of the Ottoman Empire, found Terra Sigil Late pieces at the same location. He also found some pieces belonged to the Greek Era.

Meanwhile, during the excavations done by Osman Hamdi Bey, who was  the director of the museums of İstanbul, found countless Archaic Monochrome potteries, also they came across some Yortan type of cups in a grave. Decorated with uneven black spots, bright and brown colored these artifacts indicate that, a big settlement existed here at 2000 BC. It also has been mentioned that, a late Mycenaean Vase was found by Osman Hamdi Bey in a grave. The octopus, fish and the bird designs on this vase, symbolize the art of Rodish- Mesesische at 1st century BC.
