The cove is cleaned up daily. There is no trace of filthy garbage, awful smells and flies. For a small entrance fee, one can take advantage of all the existing facilities. If you ask me, the major benefit has been the preservation of the inner gulf and the Boncuklu Cove, in actual fact the future of our sea, thanks to the sewer and purification systems.
The road follows the point that is in the shape of peninsula and ends in Kalemya Cove. However, if you are not staying at the Hillside Beach Club, you are not able to use the beach. You continue from the other side of Kalemya and get to Boncuklu Cove. There are facilities on the beach. There is a restaurant with palm trees on the beach and a small ancient ruins beside it. This is an ideal bay for people who like peaceful environments.

Boncuklu is a naturally protected small bay and beach that never effected from harsh and windy weather conditions. This beach in general visited by locals especially at the weekends for picnic, resting, barbecue and swimming. As the beach is not frequently populated it is comparatively less effected by human damage. There is no installation neither providing accommodation nor eating and drinking therefore visitors should be prepared in all aspects to spend a day there.
The area between Boncuk and Karaburun is the only known reproduction area in the Mediterranean for sharks that are up to 2 meters tall. Diving tours are available to watch or film them, especially between May and June. Locals claim although the project is one that will save the sandbar sharks, which are harmless to humans, it is a blow to the long-established tourism business in the region.
Boncuk Bay was declared a protected site and officials from the Environment and Forest Ministry, Dokuz Eylül University's Faculty of Fisheries, and the Underwater Research Society, or SAD, carried out some examinations in the bay. Following the examinations, the Environmental Protection Agency for Special Areas declared Boncuk Bay a protected area since it is home to Carcharhinus Plumbeus, sandbar sharks.

SOĞUKSU KOYU ANCHORAGE
Fethiye - Muğla - Turkey
GPS : 36°33'46.5"N 29°05'00.2"E / 36.562924, 29.083390

The final option for this area is Soguk Su or Coldwater Bay, so named because of the freshwater springs that bubble up from the depths. It’s a bit of a shock when swimmers discover that the warm saline water is topped with a freezing layer…but in the heat of the summer it is rather refreshing. In the daytime this beautiful bay is crowded with daily boat trips but don’t despair, by the evening they will have gone, leaving the place free for the yachties.
Sometimes also refered to as Fresh water bay, the underground stream surfaces at sea water level in the corner of the bay. This provides an unsual and refreshing experience when swimming as you will suddenly and enexpectedly feel areas of very cold water around you. Sometimes to one side or other, often at different levels, where your upper body is cold and your lower body warm. In the height of summer it is very refreshing.
A creek indenting to the west is called as Soğuksu Limanı. A bight on S between the rocks, allows room for just two boats. There is a cool spring on W where swimming is a real delight. There is a nice beach at the head of the cove. Boats drop anchor in 6 - 8 m off the beach and take a line ashore. The bay is open to southerlies.
Soğuksu Limanı is a well sheltered crystal bay fed by refreshing springs in the south west corner. A boatman from the restaurant will direct your anchor placement and run a line to preset attachments on the cliff face. Restaurant is lovely.
The settings are attractive and this anchorage is very popular. This pretty bay used to be the port for Kayaköy village. A path goes up to hill to the abandoned village. A tomb from Lycians is on the hill.
Mooring here is by anchor and long line ashore. As the bay is often busy, Ali and his team will guide you exactly where to drop your anchor, and then take your long lines ashore for you. His red runabout and coolie hat are unmistakeable. You can even request free collection and delivery of your party for the restaurant.
The restaurant is a popular choice, not least for the view from its location half way up the hill. The view is spectacular and some photos taken here.
Ali the owner likes to travel in the winter and his Thai chicken curry is a good example of the varied menu. All meat and fish is cooked on an open grill at the restaurant entrance, and served by courteous Turkish ladies who speak excellent english. It is also possible to buy homemade crafts from a little stall here. If you are lucky enough to arrive on a night with a large party, you may also get to enjoy some traditional Turkish belly dancing.

BEŞTAŞ (KALEVEZİ) KOYU ANCHORAGE
Fethiye - Muğla - Turkey
GPS : 36°33'30.4"N 29°05'11.0"E / 36.558448, 29.086393
Bektaş Koyu indents to the north on NE of Gemiler Island where there are two creeks on E and W.
Just south and on the same peninsula from Fethiye is Beştaş Limanı. There are plenty of quiet coves on this side of the peninsula, south of the main town of Kayaköy. From this bay you can walk into town in less than one hour. You’ll pass some ruins and once you get into town, don’t miss the churches.
Beştaş Limanı has both rocky and beach coastline. Most people take refuge to the west and to the east of the main bay. The water is deep but taking a swim is soothing, as this place is also called "Cold Water Bay" for the cold spring water that makes the water temps drop 20 C degrees. If you’re crazy enough, it’s a fun pastime to rock dive into the water here.

Şövalye Island is a part of the 12 Islands chain, but unlike most of the other islands it's still inhabited. It is the only one of the islands to be located in Fethiye's inner bay. This has a happy consequence: being the closest to the harbour, the major tour-boat operators ignore it, because they have their sights set on longer trips . Yet by water taxi it's only 20 minutes at most between Fethiye town and Şövalye. So should the tranquillity of island life begin to pall, you have easy access to the buzzy nightlife on the mainland. But for most visitors, the very attraction of Sovalye is its quietness.
Every tone of blue and green can be seen in the Gulf of Fethiye, where the encircling mainland seems to draw the sea into the embrace of its vegetation. The trees grow right down to the water's edge, their branches and leaves reaching out as if unaware of the Mediterranean's salinity. The tiny islands scattered over the gulf which in antiquity was known as the Gulf of Glaukos after the famous Lycian general who fought in the Trojan wars, resemble pearls strung around the neck of a young bride. So we invite you to join us on a tour of this beautiful place.
Boarding a boat in Fethiye harbour and heading out of the bay, across whose mouth lies Şövalye Island, leaving only two channels at the east and west extremities. The island behind the gulf is Kızıl Ada or Red Island, with its shores. There is no trace of an ancient settlement on this island, where the only inhabitants today are the lighthouse keeper and his family.
The narrow eastern channel is too shallow for large boats and ships, which have to use the western channel. In many cases the same advantages which attracted the people of antiquity to a particular spot are still valid today, which is why contemporary towns and cities in Turkey are so often built on or near ancient cities. This is the case with Şövalye Island, whose many summer villas share the island with the ruins of late Roman walls, cisterns and churches.
The name Şövalye, meaning cavalier or knight, derives from the fact that in the Middle knights turned pirate made their base here at various times. Some early writers also referred to the island as Megri Island, after the ancient name for Fethiye.
Turkey's lovely Lycian coast is no longer quite the secret it once was, but there are still some wonderful discoveries to be made. The "12 islands" chain in the Gulf of Fethiye is one such revelation - admittedly a little over-visited by excursion boats in the high season, but a fascinating scattering of ancient settlements nonetheless. Densely wooded in shades of deepest green and with their Roman and Byzantine ruins baking almost to colourlessness under the Mediterranean sun, the islands seem to float on the water like pieces of a jigsaw.
Şövalye is a part of that chain, but unlike most of the other islands it's still inhabited. It is the only one of the islands to be located in Fethiye's inner bay. This has a happy consequence: being the closest to the harbour, the major tour-boat operators ignore it, because they have their sights set on longer trips (and higher earnings). Yet by water taxi it's only 20 minutes at most between Fethiye town and Sovalye. So should the tranquillity of island life begin to pall, you have easy access to the buzzy nightlife on the mainland. But for most visitors, the very attraction of Sovalye is its quietness.
Şövalye is an island straight out of Swallows and Amazons - for pedestrians only and with shady walkways through scented pine forests. No traffic means no roads: you cross the land by tracks, beaten or otherwise. A leisurely walk from end to end takes 45 minutes or so, along a coastline dotted with sand and shingle coves. In the crystal-clear water you can make out the ruins of earlier settlements. These date back to late Roman times, but each has slid into the sea after the numerous earthquakes that have shaken this coastline; the last catastrophic quake to hit the Gulf of Fethiye struck back in 1958.
Inland, hidden amid the pines and the carob trees, are the remains of a crusader castle, built by the Knights of St John after they crossed over from nearby Rhodes. Legend has it that the island became a base in the Middle Ages for renegade knights-turned-pirates.
You can circumnavigate Sovalye by canoe in about an hour, paddling over submerged houses, an old city wall, churches and a Roman cistern that was converted to a chapel during the Byzantine period. Its roof finally collapsed only last year, following a period of heavy rain. Elsewhere, old olive-oil pots and amphorae can be seen scattered across the seabed.
There is nothing quite like license to sail around your own island to release the inner child: the unlikeliest of our handful of fellow guests went gleefully into full-on Boy's Own mode. The less energetic among us spent the time playing cards with Handan's father on the terrace, raiding the honesty bar for more bottles of beer every time the game took an interesting turn.
Besides Ece (which provides seven self-catering apartments) and a couple of small rental villas, there's only one - slightly shabby - hotel on Şövalye, which seems to be from another age. A bored cat and a dog snoring under a pomegranate tree were the only life-forms we could find when crossing the courtyard to investigate. Otherwise, the houses on Şövalye are privately owned - most, but not all, as holiday homes. Local planners have restricted the number of new structures to 70, a total that has almost been reached.
Accordingly, peace and quiet reign supreme. Away from the water, the only noticeable noise comes from the island's wildlife - birds in their hundreds, and a non-stop cacophony of cicadas. And the stillness in the air is made tangible by the headiness of the scents with which Şövalye is awash. During our visit in early August, the jasmine was overpowering. Just as the peacefulness of Sovalye makes it a favourite retreat for writers, so the quality of light has a special lure for artists: keen; clear; shimmering.

AKSAZLAR KOYU ANCHORAGE
Fethiye - Muğla - Turkey
GPS : 36°37'51.3"N 29°05'38.7"E / 36.630906, 29.094082
PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM
Aksazlar Koyu is roughly 1 km away from Marina Vista Hotel, further along the peninsula road and we’ve never seen it crowded, hence the reason why we like to sit here – but we don’t lie on the beach. There are sunbeds, and you can also lounge around, Ottoman-style, in the shade of a köşk, but we forgo all of that and sit under the pine trees.
There’s something really relaxing about sitting in the shade of the encroaching pine forest, watching the yachts come and go in the distance. A perfect angle from which to enjoy the Fethiye scenery while sipping an ice-cold drink. And ‘bay’ is a more accurate description. When we say ‘beach’, we mean ‘shingle seashore’.
Aksazlar Koyu isn’t for everyone. If you’re coming here to enjoy a swim in the clear turquoise waters of the Mediterranean, then you’re going to be disappointed. People do take a swim here - the water is calm and shallow - but we’re very close to the boatyard and we’re in Fethiye harbour. The water’s murky. Take a look and decide for yourself before diving in.
The view is picturesque and we suggest you take a photo of the sea from above and caiques in the water. Everywhere there are pine trees and fresh pine scent in the air you are breathing. On the bottom of cliffs are coves that follow one another. You can get down to most of these. In one of them there is a buffet and toilet, this cove has a very beautiful beach as well.

KULELİ KOYU ANCHORAGE
Fethiye - Muğla - Turkey
GPS : 36°38'39.5"N 29°04'34.9"E / 36.644297, 29.076371
PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM
Just like Aksazlar Bay and the other bays around this area of Fethiye, Kuleli Koyu is set in a clearing in the pine forests that cover the hillsides along the coastline. But, unlike Aksazlar, which has gone for a restaurant-feel, Kuleli has kept it simple and rustic. The beach itself is pebble and stone - they all are in this area of Fethiye - but the sea here is clear, cool and refreshing.
A small, wooden cafe with plastic chairs and tables serves customers with snacks and drinks. Those who are going to be drinking çay all day long can opt for a large çaydanlık, the water heated by coals, that they can take down to the beach with them.
Chickens, cockerels and guinea fowl run around freely, providing entertainment for those who sit at the cafe and tables are available for those who are here to picnic. It’s a good set-up.
Kuleli Koyu has sunbeds and umbrellas for hire for those who are here to soak up the rays. And, if you’re lounging around all day, it’s also possible to hire one of the shaded köşks. Drying off while lying on your beach towel is completely free.

AFKULE KOYU ANCHORAGE
Fethiye - Muğla - Turkey
GPS : 36°34'39.3"N 29°01'51.2"E / 36.577571, 29.030890
PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM
A ruined monastery high above us on the cliffs. Last year an old coastguard boat was scuppered in the very deep water near here to provide a home for sea creatures, making it a great dive area. Not so far away there are some weirdly wonderful semi-submerged caves, forming part of the headland known as Iblis Burnu, or Devil’s cape.
Diving
This is another fascinating dive site were you first, very slowly, descend to 24 m to enjoy the beautiful scenery before arriving at the entrance of this rather large cavern that is home to the Red small shrimp. After 10 minutes or so you will ascend to 12 m then 4 m and at 200 m you will find the huge entrance of the cave that allows 10 divers easily through at the same time; the cave is so large you will need to kick fins for at least 50 m before reaching the end and when you turn around you can see the sunlight running all around the cave. When you ascend to the surface here you can use a torch to see all the calcium deposits that Mother Nature has made.
This is another great wall dive for drop off lovers and has all the colours and marine life that you would expect to find in the Mediterranean. There is a small cavern full of shrimp at 28 m and the reef wall seems to continue endlessly to the final part of the dive.
This is a great drop-off dive that also features a small cave teeming with shrimp. For beginner through advanced divers, Tarzan Bay is an option. It’s both easy and beautiful, with sundry remains of ancient pottery jars (amphora) visible on the seafloor.
Intermediate to advanced divers with a passion for the past may well find Amphora Bay intriguing, which got its name from the large number of Roman pottery jars (circa. 300 B.C.) on the bottom. The slope drops steeply. Rock formations are home to a wide variety of marine creatures, including octopuses, moray eels, and groupers.
Afkule Monastery
GPS : 36°34'46.2"N 29°02'14.2"E / 36.579503, 29.037272
You will see the remains of a monastery 400 m above the sea level, on a hill that slopes into the sea. According to the legend, the 10 m square monastery, known locally as Afkule, was carved into the rock at a cost of a lifetime of suffering by a monk named Ayios Elefeterios. This location has a spectacular view, from which you can see İblis Point, Kurdoğlu Point and, if the weather is fine, even the island of Rhodes.
The nearest location where you can swim in the Kayaköy region is Soğuksu (Cold Water) Cove. Its name does not refer to the temperature of sea but possibly to the spring water boiling into the sea. You can walk from the church following the path up the hill and then down to the water, the stroll taking half an hour.
Perhaps a more rewarding sight is the monastery at Afkule (also spelled Af Kule), clinging at the high cliffs over the sea, and which affords really impressive views over the Gulf of Fethiye, as far away as Rhodes if the air is clear. Other than its roof, this Greek Orthodox monastery is as sound as it was when abandoned in 1920s.
To get there, you will need a short (about 3 km) but pretty demanding hike up and down along a trail, part of it, though, fortunately, through a pine forest. In total it takes around an hour on foot to get there from the ghost town.
West of Kayaköy, leave the gravel road to Gemile at where the trail (a dirt track) to Afkule branches off, which is properly marked by yellow signs. At about midway through the trail to Afkule (about 1 km away from where you started), you'll notice a branching track to right - this is the wrong path, keep to the trail to left instead.
The trail ends in a open space - carpark for those taking their vehicles along the track. From here, take the wide track to right, which is waymarked with the yellow-red marks usual in the area, and which will slowly ascent to the top of the cliff, which is about 1 km away from the carpark.
Then the trail will descend down to the monastery, but be extremely careful in this section as it is very easy to slip down since the path is covered with loose gravel. Perhaps not for the faint hearted, you can further explore the lower stories of the complex (the church and residences of the monks) once you are in the monastery, though that will require a very steep climb down with the full view of high cliffs down to the coast (a whopping 400 m just below your feet).
It is said, that building of the monastery was his way of doing penance to god in utter solitude and it costs him his whole lifetime. Only god knows, how he managed to accomplish these physical and mental strains and struggles all by himself.
Nowadays the monastery is in ruinous condition, but you can access these ruins and you can also proceed into the carved rooms in the rock. The lower ones must have been used as a stable for goats. Amongst the other remaining masonry you'll find 2 chapels and a cistern, which is superior to the monastery.
