Kabak is a small village in Lycia, Turkey. It is the perfect place to escape the package tourist groups, and a great place on the Turkish Mediterranean to have a truly laid-back experience. As it doesn't have sufficient population to be designated as a village, Kabak is officially a neighbourhood of Uzunyurt, and as such, is usually omitted from maps, even quite detailed ones.
The beach waits quiet in the morning, the valley still in the shadow of the surrounding mountains. By late morning, swimmers crawl through the shallow waves or sunbathe on the stone beach. At lunch the aromas of Turkish cooking, olive oil frying tomato and onion for hot dishes or gozleme sizzling on the griddle call to the people lounging on the beach. Fishing boats pass in and out of the bay picking up and dropping off tourists to see other more hidden destinations.
Despite the closeness to these beaches, which have many pensions, hotels, restaurants and bars, Kabak Bay still remains a little visited area. The reason for this may be the high-mountain roads which wind tight around cliff faces. It may also be the relative lack of night-life, five-star accomodation and food. Whatever the reason, this makes Kabak Bay a better choice for those searching for a less frantic holiday in natural surroundings.
The valley accommodation is also very popular for one main reason. Access to the beach is easy and one can go back and forth whenever the mood strikes without thinking about the time of day and if they can make it back for dinner on time. There are also small shops and more food selections to choose from in the immediate beach area. For those looking to be more social and among the people, this is also the place to be as everything is close together in the limited area.
Kabak Bay beach is a quaint space at the bottom of forested mountains. The bay reaches out from the feet of the mountain toward the Mediterranean Sea running from a clear blue to deep turqoise as the water deepens. The beach is mainly small stone with some patches of sand. There is not much shade to be had on the actual beach but further back people can find rest from the sun under the pine trees.
The beach is little populated compared to the neighboring Belcekiz and Ölüdeniz beaches creating a more serene atmosphere. Beach-goers can swim, snorkel, sunbathe, or just relax on the beach with a good book.
