Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

Demre is a town and its surrounding district in the Antalya Province on the Mediterranean coast of Turkey, named after the river Demre. Demre is on the coast of the Teke peninsula, west of the bay of Antalya, with the Taurus Mountains behind. The mountains are forested and the coastal strip is made of good soil brought down by the mountain rivers. The climate is the typical Mediterranean pattern of hot dry summers and warm wet winters.

Demre lies on the highway D400, which connects Fethiye in the west with Antalya in the east along the Lycian coast. Many buses running town to town on this highway connect Demre with Kalkan, Kaş, Finike, and Olympos among others.

Before the tourism boom began in the 1980s the local economy depended on agriculture, which is still important today. The villages of Demre grow pomegranates and citrus fruits and now a large quantity of fruits and vegetables all year round in greenhouses. Also with its rich history, attractions like the island of Kekova, the sea and warm weather this coast is very popular with holidaymakers from Turkey and all over Europe. Some local handicrafts like rug making, and events such as the annual camel-wrestling festival bring in extra income.

HISTORICAL PLACES

Andriake
You will find Çayağzı, previously known as Andriake, just 5 km away from Demre. Çayağzı was a major Roman hub, which has now become a delightful small port. The nearby Rock Tombs of Myra are carved deep into the Myra cliffs, and are intricately decorated with carvings and columns, while the reliefs depict family scenes and uniformed military men, dating back to the 4th and 5th centuries BC.

South of Demre where the Androkos river emptied into the Mediterranean once stood the harbour town of Andriake, a hugely important trading centre. Today most people race past the ruins on the main road from Demre to Kaş with only a passing glance at the remains of a huge granary on the far side of the river.

Myra
Myra. An ancient Lycian city just outside the modern town. See Myra for details of the history and archaeology of the city of Myra (today's Demre) and the history of Saint Nicholas of Myra (Santa Claus) . Myra was one of the most important cities in ancient Lycia. Coins have been found dating back to 300 BC, but logically the city must have been founded centuries earlier. The city thrived as part of the Roman Empire and many public buildings were built.

St Nicholas Church
St Nicholas Church (Noel Baba Kilisesi). The main attraction of the town is the church of St Nicholas, a native of the town during the days of Myra (late 3rd/early 4th century CE), later on whom the "Santa Claus" is based on as he had a reputation for giving presents secretly. The region is popular with tourists today particularly Christian pilgrims who visit the tomb of Saint Nicholas.
