Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

ANCIENT ERYTHRAI PHOTOGRAPHS ALBUM

Ildırı is a picturesque sea-side village on the Aegean Sea coast belonging to the administrative district of Çeşme in Turkey's İzmir Province and located about 25 km north of Çeşme town, facing Chios.

There are amazing coves in Ildırı with pretty islands. You can go to these islands by yachts and boats. It is so amazing to watch the sun down in Ildırı. The famous Plato said that " the best sun down on earth is in Erithrai". And you can see it obviously, too.

Besides that the artichokes of Ildırı are so famous and tasty. These are the most delicious artichokes of Turkey. And also there are lots of fresh and tasty fish in Ildırı. In the local restaurants you can have in the best way.

An attractive anchorage. Anchor behind the island or W of the village.

There's a pretty little fishing harbour behind the mosque.

ANCIENT ERYTHRAI
Take a look around Ildir and you will immediately see stones and relics from more than 2.5 millenia ago with some antique stones resting in the artichoke fields of local farmers. Ildir, as it is known today, or Erythrai as the Ionians called it nearly 3000 years ago, is a small village about 20 km northeast of Çeşme. Ildir, as many areas around Çeşme, is worth seeing just for the natural beauty but it also possesses a historical feature to it that makes it even more ineteresting.

Erythrai was one of 12 Ionian cities located in Asia Minor and was founded by the Cretan Erythrus about 2700 years ago. At first an Ionian union member, the town later joined forces with the Athenians and the Persians. Never a large city (the population at that period is estimated to be 15-20,000 people), Erythrai gained fame as a producer of high quality wine and millstones. The city gained its independence thanks to Alexander the Great in 334 B.C. and then later aligned with the kingdom of Pergamum and then the Roman Empire, the latter of which ended up plundering and pillaging the city.

And after the earthquakes in the first century, the city lost nearly all its remaining importance. The ruins of Erythrai were partially unearthed during some excavations in the 1960's but most of the city is still underground. Turkey, extremely rich in historical artifacts, still has most of its archeological wealth underground due to the high costs of such excavations and Erythrai is just one of these ancient sites.

Just as you come to the end of Ildırı you'll see a sign pointing out onto the headland where the remains of several fine Roman villas with mosaic floors were uncovered. Don't get too excited though. Most of the site is fenced off and the mosaics have been covered over again for their protection so all you can see are the low walls of the houses.

FISH RESTAURANTS
Eating fish in Dalyanköy is a classic in Çeşme. The fish restaurants and eating places are overcrowded at weekends and they are full of families eating dinner collectively.
