Yenifoça is a suburb of the Foça district, in Turkey's İzmir Province. Since the names Yenifoça and that of the district center share the same roots, Foça itself is locally often called as Eskifoça in daily parlance. Yeni Foça is a small resort set around a harbor, with a large number of old houses in Ottoman or Greek styles filling its back streets.

Many parts of the district are under strict environmental protection, due to the value of the flora and the fauna, especially along the road north from Foça to Yenifoça, winding past camping grounds, hotels and holiday villas, and offering dramatic sea views. Because of the protective measures, new constructions are not permitted in many parts of the district and Foça is set to preserve its unique characteristic as composed principally of old houses.

Yenifoça, taken over by the Genoese in 1275 and initially as a dowry, was the more active of the two Foças during the Middle Ages, due principally to the region's rich alum reserves, the Genoese lease over them having been preserved well into the Ottoman era. On 12 May 1649, at the height of the Cretan War (1645-1669), the harbor was the scene of a naval engagement in which the Ottoman and Venetian navies briefly checked each other.

The harbour in Yeni Foça has moorings for up to 75 fishing boats. There is currently a development project underway to construct a 300 boat marina nearby.

Yeni Foça is a town with own municipality in Foça district, in Turkey's İzmir Province. The town of Yeni Foça is situated at about 80 km (50 mi) north by northwest of İzmir city center and a distance of 20 km (12 mi) from Foça proper. Since the names Yenifoça and that of the district center share the same roots, Foça itself is locally often called as Eskifoça in daily parlance.

This small resort town set around a harbour boasts a strip of coarse beach, and a wealth of crumbling Ottoman mansions and old Greek stone houses. Long discovered by second-home hunters, Yeni Foça now has its fair share of modern monstrosities alongside the aged marvels. There are some more secluded beaches to the south towards Foça (Eski Foça).

ENVIRONMENTAL PROTECTION
Some parts of the district are under environmental protection, due to the flora, fauna and the natural beauty of the bays and coves, especially between Yeni Foça and Eski Foça - the ancient city of Phocaea - was located between the two modern day Foça’s. To take advantage of this wonderful coast line boat tours operate from Eski Foça on a regular basis. You can also do day trips to the Greek Islands from here. Due to this protection order there are also many areas where new construction is not allowed.

NEW PHOCAEA
Additionally, Yenifoça, taken over by the Genoese in 1275 as a fief from the Byzantine emperor, was the more active of the two Foças during the Middle Ages, principally due to the region's rich alum reserves (the alum mines of Foça were conceded earlier by the Byzantines, in 1267, to the Genoese brothers Benedetto and Manuele Zaccaria); the Genoese lease over them having been preserved well into the Ottoman era.

Another important Byzantine concession to the Genoese through dowry was the nearby island of Lesbos (to the Gattilusio family, as a result of the marriage between Francesco I Gattilusio and Maria Palaiologina, sister of Byzantine emperor John V Palaiologos) in 1355. The possessions of the Gattilusio family eventually grew to include, among others, the islands of Imbros, Samothrace, Lemnos and Thasos, and the city of Aenos (modern Enez in Turkey.) From this position, they were heavily involved in the mining and marketing of alum, useful in textile production and a profitable trade controlled by the Genoese.

FISH RESTAURANTS
On the small pier the local fishermen catch fresh fish for the harbour side restaurants. Most fish restaurants will display their days catch which may include sea bass, octopus, squid, grouper or other local varieties.
