Sailing in Turkey also allows visitors to experience the hospitality of the people in the coastal villages and towns. The tempered winds blowing from west and northwest make the long summers ideal for yachting, and seem to encourage an appreciation of nature. From some of the turquoise coast's unspoilt and sheltered bays you can see mountain peaks rising to almost 3000 meters above sea level.

The village lived as Behramkale for centuries, and with the advance of tourism in the 20th century, its ancient name of Assos returned back to the surface. Today, highway signs and the like always refer to the village as both (such as Behramkale - Assos), but travelling industry almost always refer to it as Assos only. The village was an important centre in ancient times. It had then a philosophy academy run by the famous philosophers Aristotales and Hermaios, a student of Platon.

Assos, also known as Behramkale (or, rarely, as Behram, as it appears on some old maps), is a village in northern Aegean Region, Turkey. It’s located on the northern coast of Gulf of Edremit, just opposite the northern coast of the Greek island of Lesvos. Assos, also known as Behramkale or for short Behram, is a small historically rich town in the Ayvacık district of the Çanakkale Province, Turkey.

This is a village that is consisted of two parts: the real village on the top of a hill overlooking the sea, and a coastal part right down by the shore (which was the harbour of the village in the past). Both parts are equally old and full of stone buildings with traditional Mediterranean architecture.

The upper and lower parts of the village is connected to each other by a narrow, very steep, and part tarmac part cobbled road which can be taken in about 20 minutes on foot. Alternatively, you can take Küçükkuyu Belediyesi public buses from the stop at the entrance of the old town (next to the statue of Aristotales) to the waterfront - their last stop.

Both parts are equally old and full of stone buildings with traditional Mediterranean architecture.

Babakale, some 20 km to the west, on the edge of the peninsula, is a village known for its well-preserved citadel which sits on a cape that is exactly the westernmost point of Asian mainland. As well as the fascinating ancient ruins, the clean sea and pure air, delicious fish and lovely scenery all contribute to the attraction of Behramkale.

The upper and lower parts of the village is connected to each other by a steep road which can be taken in about 20 minutes on foot. Alternatively, you can take Küçükkuyu Municipality public buses from the stop at the entrance of the old town (next to the statue of Aristotales) to the waterfront - their last stop.

ASSOS
Known today as Behramköy or Behramkale, the ancient city of Assos has undoubtedly undergone many changes since it was first settled in the third millennium BC. The site has been inhabited without interruption over the intervening centuries.

Unlike the ancient city, however, the present village is situated on the north facing slope of the hill out of sight of the sea. This is no doubt due to the piracy which was prevalent along the Aegean coast from the Middle Ages onwards.

The village was an important centre in ancient times. It had then a philosophy academy run by the famous philosophers Aristotales and Hermaios, a student of Platon. Aristotle lived here and opened an Academy.

Assos was founded in the 7th century BC. This ancient city, which accepted the sovereignty of the Lydians in the 6th century BC, surrendered to the Macedonians like many other West Anatolian cities during the Asian Campaign of Alexander the Great in  the 4th century BC. After the death of this great conqueror, it was first ruled by the Kingdom of Pergamon then by the Roman Empire, Byzantium and finally joined to the Ottoman Empire by Sultan Murat I.

Assos consists of two parts, the harbour and the city. At the harbour, few buildings-notably the ancient quay, part and warehouse-have survived till today. Above the harbour  however, many remnants of ancient Assos may be found; the fortification walls with towers and gates, the Temple of Athena which is on the crown of the Acropolis built in 540-530 BC in Doric order showing lonian influence, the Agora and Agora Temple, Southern and Northern stoas, bouleterion, gymnasium, theatre and necropolis.

Temple to Athena is on the top of the hill over the old town. This is the major attraction of the village. It dates back to the 6th century BC and has the first ever Doric columns (still standing) built on Asian soil.

RUGS PRODUCTION
The new popularity of Assos as a resort over the past decade has reversed the decline of traditional crafts in the region. The carpet and kilim looms have been set up once again and are producing new and original rugs which find a ready market.
